You get ADAM from 4 places: Harvesting Little Sisters, rescuing little sisters, using little sisters to gather it from corpses, or finding the ADAM slugs out side of the Rapture buildings when you go underwater.

I'll sum it up. 1950's the above world is too stick on what you and can't do. Ryan and Atlas build under water city of Rapture. People move there to be free. Their freedom results in the cration of Adam which allows you to change your genes. Things get out of control people killing each other over adam.

By the year 1968 everything is gone and a new leader named Sofia Lamb controls rapture using collectivism.. Opposite philosophy games.

well its not an extremely scary game, I mean it has it's moments but for the most parts the game is well lit and you can see everything coming. I believe there only 1part where it's dark and you have to fight splicers at the same time, but if you through out some mini turrets and place some traps as well as hack security. You can basicly sit back and close your eyes through it xD not that its really that scary. A majority of it's scare factor comes from cheap startle moments. Overall it's safe.

The best way to kill anythng in the game is winter blast and drill, i know this is the first big sister encounter, but you should never use electro bolt on a big sister. They have a pulsar sort of thing that emits a counter bust of electric energy, plus electro bolt doesn't do much damage to them.

Best plasmids to have (other than the Elanor summon) is Winter Blast 3 and the air trap. You can mix the two for awesome defense when gathering. When they step into it they get frozen and mini turrents or hacked security can take them out before they reach the sister, makes getting the master gatherer trophy/achievement easier.

I just use scout, hide in a corner, and the splicers are never able to find me when gathering. When they get too close to the sister, I just invisibly incinerate them and they have no clue what to do.
