I am currently directing RENT in Portsmouth, I went to see the remixed version, prior to seeing the Boradway version, the cast in this version all had great voices but it was a totally different version to what Jonathan Larson had written. this is way to orchestral, this productuion should be raw and trueful just as the great man intended it to be!SHAME ON YOU for doing this!!!!!

And just the fact that there were background vocals throughout the entire song? Both the instrumental and vocal arrangements make this sound like a happy-go-luck choir song that would be sung at the opening cermonies of the Olympics. I don't quite understand why this was the solution to the problem that RENT 'doesn't work' with London audiences. It traded off a lot of nuanced composition (that makes for an emotionally resonant score and libretto) for gloss and hard candy. It doesn't make sense to me.

The producers had to produce Rent on Broadway the way it was. They couldn't make any changes to it because at the time of the transfer from off Broadway to Broadway the author of the show had died. In fact he died before the off Broadway run began. It does say a lot about the show if even though it is very technically incomplete it is still able to impact as many people as it did. It's because of this that the original Rent will never be seen on the London stage again.

Actually, it's kinda just that rent doesn't work in London...they did it twice exactly the same as the broadway version, and it didn't gel with London audiences. Didn't help that this version was rather flawed, but to be honest, no version of rent has worked in London properly.

The problem with the remix is that it drastically changed both the book (script) as well as the music itself. It turned Rent into something that it wasn't. I live in NYC and am proud to say that I have seen the Broadway production close to 30 times. But, this isn't Rent. I am sad to say to say that due to this they might never produce Rent how it is meant to be. How it was produced at the Shaftsbury a few years ago.

I think the fact that Jonathan Larson's work is still being produced and his message is being spread is exactly what he wanted and never thought possible. The movie was not like the Broadway production, but it was still good. I think that Jonathan Larson would be happy if he knew what his musical had turned into.

i don't especially like this version either but larson wrote rent as a rock opera so that it would connect with a diverse audience. if those in london (and whoever else) like this version and this version connects with them then so be it. either way it is spreading jonathan larson's message.

This is fantastic. I just have one thing to to everyone bashing these videos. Isn't RENT pretty much ABOUT being open minded? So why are we being so closed minded about this? And how do you honestly know what Johnathan would think of think of this? Maybe he'd be honored to have someone want to bring RENT to a new generation! Rent is about the beauty of these characters, and I don't think we should be criticizing a retelling of such an amazing story, even if you don't like this version.

Real rent, never does well, well, rent period. Rent did, and will always need fixing, its an incomplete piece. I personally think if a piece can be changed its obviously not that good. if it has to be performed in the exact same way everytime it obviously cant be that good.
