@titfortat2 I watched an amateur production of RENT at a college in the UK. And it was by far, amazing! Sure there was things they could have worked on, but it was much better than RENT REMIXED. It goes to show, even an amateur production can sometimes do better than a professional West End show.
Why did they ever remix something that is so raw and amazing!? Its disrespectful to Jonathan Larson in my opinion and i don't know how they were ever able to go through with it. Get the real verison on the West End with Raw performers!!
I am currently directing RENT in Portsmouth, I went to see the remixed version, prior to seeing the Boradway version, the cast in this version all had great voices but it was a totally different version to what Jonathan Larson had written. this is way to orchestral, this productuion should be raw and trueful just as the great man intended it to be!SHAME ON YOU for doing this!!!!!
Okay, I have to admit, the reviewers are right. At first it doesn't sound bad. I thought, "What is the problem?? It is just a little faster that's all..." THEN, I heard the SHOO WOP! Oh dear. A TIMPANI?? Not right. (However, I can manage to write a comprehensive review without using the "F" word for every single thought. It really does little to show those who love Rent are actually intelligent, when people talk like drunken idiots.
I'm drunk right now and i'm actually upset hearing this. I hate denise van slutten and everything to so with her (except lee mead; why ae you marrying her?). How dare you change jonathan larson's musical. It's said that it's not perfect but he couldn't exactly change it could he? "oh I know, rent's doing really well and has lasted 12 years on broadway, lets change it for a new london production" well done, well fucking done(!)
PLEASE dont judge British actors and composers on this pile of crap. We have hundreds of very talented people (who were sensible enough to stay away from this)
Seriously though. That intro is fucked up. And what was with those doo-wop background vocals from the original Broadway of Grease? "Aah-oo"? Really? And just the fact that there were background vocals throughout the entire song? Both the instrumental and vocal arrangements make this sound like a happy-go-luck choir song that would be sung at the opening cermonies of the Olympics. Oh, and last but furthest from least, did they really end with timpani? Did that actually happen? Oh yeah, it did.
British Crap??? Any country can have Rock Operas... Who wrote Jesus Christ Superstar for example?? Not an american? Oh yes, it was one of the most successful composers of the 20th century, a brit - Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Maybe so. But does that mean the have to ruin THIS particular rock opera, which just happens to be written by an American? I'm not disagreeing with you about JCSS, but they shouldn't torture Jonathan Larson by slapping his name on it and giving him pretty much full credit.
@AdamJamesWoolley Yes your right ALW did write great plays and musicals, key word WROTE. And I'm sorry, this IS crap. When Larson wrote RENT, he was going by things that happened in his life as a bohemian artist, in the 80's in New York, Where AIDS was everywhere.British people did NOT have much of durning that time. There was no tent cities in England or alphabet Cities. So when a brit takes something like this and remixes it to try to apply it to Brit standards It's going to suck.
Hm, I dunno. The remixing thing is different, which is kind of distracting, just to me personally. But the people singing are obviously all-in, and their voices are wonderful. ^_^
can i just say jon is a total inspiration and i respect anyone who sings his music with such love and respect as he deserves his music to be heard in what ever way they feel it bless you jonathan! xxx p.s i have never heard anyone sing his music badly everyone has felt it and done it great justice!
it really shouldnt have been remixed-it would have been amazingly successful if they had put the original production on the west end. i REALLY hope they do that cos i never saw it on broadway and i never will :(
I don't know, the song sounds so strange...like an odd pop song. I hate the chorus behind Roger's voice at the first part of the song! And the strange guy in 1:26 looks like David Bekcham but more gay (David also seems gay to me, but...)
i hope that soon england will realise that they need to stage the ORIGINAL production as written by jonathan larson. it was perfect how it was and by changing it i dont think it connects with the audience the way it should.
i am from england and i am gutted that the production is closing on broadway and i think tat it is an absolute travesty that that production is not currently running on the westend with actors and singers able to portray the characters properly as shown by the OBC.
sorry for the rant but i feel very strongly about this
I don't quite understand why this was the solution to the problem that RENT 'doesn't work' with London audiences. It traded off a lot of nuanced composition (that makes for an emotionally resonant score and libretto) for gloss and hard candy. It doesn't make sense to me.
The producers had to produce Rent on Broadway the way it was. They couldn't make any changes to it because at the time of the transfer from off Broadway to Broadway the author of the show had died. In fact he died before the off Broadway run began. It does say a lot about the show if even though it is very technically incomplete it is still able to impact as many people as it did. It's because of this that the original Rent will never be seen on the London stage again.
Actually, it's kinda just that rent doesn't work in London...they did it twice exactly the same as the broadway version, and it didn't gel with London audiences. Didn't help that this version was rather flawed, but to be honest, no version of rent has worked in London properly.
The problem with the remix is that it drastically changed both the book (script) as well as the music itself. It turned Rent into something that it wasn't. I live in NYC and am proud to say that I have seen the Broadway production close to 30 times. But, this isn't Rent. I am sad to say to say that due to this they might never produce Rent how it is meant to be. How it was produced at the Shaftsbury a few years ago.
however, that production was a horrible flop. british audiences dont seem to ever warm to rent, and, even in the tour it was changed, Rent in the UK will never be like the broadway production, which i think is a good thing.
yes..its not rent...ITS RENT REMIXED....says it in the bloody title. christ..i LOVE rent..but this was hardly terrible...i was amazing by the change...it was refreshing...i may prefer the original..but i enjoyed this show very much.
I think the fact that Jonathan Larson's work is still being produced and his message is being spread is exactly what he wanted and never thought possible. The movie was not like the Broadway production, but it was still good. I think that Jonathan Larson would be happy if he knew what his musical had turned into.
i don't especially like this version either but larson wrote rent as a rock opera so that it would connect with a diverse audience. if those in london (and whoever else) like this version and this version connects with them then so be it. either way it is spreading jonathan larson's message.
i hope those who like this version love rent just as much as i do.
i love this version! its so different! haha! mimi is white! thw two guys kissing shocked me cause i was watching this my brother. not expected. you think i would because this musical has gay ppl in it. lol w/e
This is fantastic. I just have one thing to to everyone bashing these videos. Isn't RENT pretty much ABOUT being open minded? So why are we being so closed minded about this? And how do you honestly know what Johnathan would think of think of this? Maybe he'd be honored to have someone want to bring RENT to a new generation! Rent is about the beauty of these characters, and I don't think we should be criticizing a retelling of such an amazing story, even if you don't like this version.
well first, who says it wants to be like the broadway version? and i think u'll find JL's dad agree cuz there offered him loooads a money, but who cares? it does the same job as the b-way production.
no way.. the original was a moving, touching soul felt play. how they have changed it into a up to date show, compleatly changes it. i say musicals should stay the way they are. There famous for a reason. Rent didnt need fixing. Im a londoner and i hope some day they will put the Real RENT on the west end.
Real rent, never does well, well, rent period. Rent did, and will always need fixing, its an incomplete piece. I personally think if a piece can be changed its obviously not that good. if it has to be performed in the exact same way everytime it obviously cant be that good. Rent has great musical, and all this production did was try to complete it, and make it successful for a british public.
