wearing some safety gear is okay until you can ride safely but after that lose the gear. and by some safety gear i mean a skateboard helmet and nothing else. you will look like an idiot wearing knee and elbow pads.

Remember to check for rocks and pebbles. Once I was skating, and I hit a pebble about the size of a penny, and hit the ground hard. I have a good board, with good wheels, so it could really happen to anyone.
