Not really. Most tests in Japan are relatively short when compared to overseas dojos. We have always been told that Sensei (in this case it is Suganuma Shihan) can tell what level you are from the very first technique you do. Bearing this in mind spending 5 minutes would seem like a waste of time.
2:37 and that's it? Is it an exception or are all exams this short?

Most of the early exams 5,4, 3 kyuu are short. But the dan tests are longer.

Interesting. My 5kyu exam was only 5 minutes long, which was an exception. Usually even such low-grade exams are longer.

even 4th and 3rd kyu are considered early? in your dojo, do you start at 6th or 5th kyu?

I'm not sure I understand your question. In Japan adults start from 5th kyu. Why?
