@TVBReCollection Her accent is not noticeable AT ALL. The way she constructs the sentence(seeing it's a speech of course it is rehearsed but you get the idea!). I think that's her native language. Not sure.
The thing about her English...put simply=her mother tongue!
Other than that is also has to do with her ASIAN voice. You don't hear people like her singing American pop songs which require a very strong-sounding vocal voice...White people just simply have a different voice. Thankfully I don't sound very asian, just because I don't hang out with many asians.
She's clearly fluent in English, no doubt about it. But she does still have a hint of a Chinese accent, and it's not obvious to the non-Asians out there who are less susceptible to picking up the subtleties in her speaking. I'm not a CBC (Canadian Born Chinese), but rather, I'm an ABC (American Born Chinese). I know a minimal amount of Chinese, and when I do spew out those basic words now and then, I have a huge English accent. Point is, she has a minor accent that not everyone can pick up on.
@astroboy315, i'd say her chinese accent is more than just a hint. i'm nto sure if she did that deliberately becuase she's speaking to a chinese audience.
she sounds like someone who speaks cantonese as a first langauge.
I wouldn't say she has a Cantonese accent...no way...that's definitely a Canadian accent. however, as with most CBCs and ABCs, there is something distinctive about her accent that clearly shows she's Asian.
I think it's cos ABCs and CBCs' accents are almost "too perfect"...I think that's the distinguishing factor. Caucasians have a certain "laziness" in their pronunciations, where ABCs and CBCs do not.
I think it's like Cantonese in HK....there are tons of "lazy sounds" which makes an unique accent but foreigners who learn the language have a significantly different accent
even when I speak Canto, people immediately know that I'm not local because I took pinyin classes in Van. to learn Canto so I don't have so many "lazy sounds"
I know exactly what "lazy sounds" you're referring to. Things like pronouncing "n" sounds as "l" sounds right? e.g pronouncing "you" as "lei" rather than the correct "nei".
...or pronouncing "country" as "gok" rather than "gwok"...

i totally agree with sophietheen ! Her presentation was so plain...but quite frankly,i have to say we can't hide the fact that she's gorgeous ! hehe...
omg even i can pull off a presentation better than that...she's an artist and well, considered a role model by many, so please speak professionally...and dont erm erm erm...lol....she sounded really stupid honestly, listen to real role models like maggie Q...linda keep uses the same words...and no, honey, we cannot see ppl in the computers, its the internet...lol!
She is kinda good at English! But i might be better in english even though i been born in hong kong but i was in canada longer than hong kong(i kinda feel wierd because i lived longer in canada than in hong kong even though i been born in hong kong)
i also agree with the fact that ABC's speak differently than caucasians. We have the accent but its still different somehow...the pronouciation is not the same. Theirs is more smooth and perfect no matter how they say it while we can never get the sound exactly the way they do it. For example our "s". Asians sound more dull and its not precise. We either try too hard or not enough. If you record an asian and a caucasian on a recorder. It is very DISTINCT. which is kind of odd.....
I seriously don't understand you ppl who make such a big deal about the fact that she can speak English. many other TVB artists can speak fluent english too and nobody's raving about them. Besides, her english really isn't even that impressive for someone who grew up in North America. Honestly, her speech sounds colloquial and rather juvenile. But then again, she really only has high school education given that she's only gone to one year of post-secondary studies.
BrightnessQQ....nonono...she does NOT sound like a white person. If you listen to her carefully, you can quite distinctly tell that she's Asian. You can tell that she's a CBC.
To the untrained ear, it made sound like a white person speaking. But there is something quite distinct about the way CBCs/ABCs speak...you can just tell that they're Chinese.
I agree with you. Americans tend to sound more firm, powerful and smooth with the way they talk. ABC/CBCs, however, speak in a very airy-light voice, which indicates to me (most of the time), that they're Asian. It IS very distinctive, and I'm not sure how to explain it.
I speak the same way as her, lol, and I don't like it. I want to have firmer foundation in my voice, without that short airy hesitancy when I say something.
Totally agree with your sentiments. I'm a Chinese person from Australia, and our ABCs also distinctively sound Asian, even though they have "perfect" Aussie accents.
There's just something different about it...I think it's the tone in which they speak, but yes it is very difficult to describe what the difference is. But you can certainly tell they're Asian without looking at them.
I think you'll note that with ABCs and CBCs, there is too much emphasis on pronuncing every word fully and getting the phonetics right. It's probably due to the influence of the mon-syllabic nature of Chinese.
Westerners don't usually do that. They have a "lazier", more casual pronunciation of words- hence sound more smooth. I don't think I sound ABC. My accent is quite "white", although I'm probably halfway between the two.
I never really factored in the innate monosyllabic nature of Chinese to how we speak English, but I think it's more likely due to multi-intonations of Chinese rather than the mono-syllabic reason.
Still a great observation though! Got me thinking at least.
On another note, I think having an American accent is really hard. They tend to resonate a lot of power with every word spoken so maybe we're both wrong? They just have better vocal cords?
@juslitome...thanks for your comments. I think we're both right...Think about it- the multi-intonations go hand in hand with the mono-syllabic nature of Chinese. The very reason wy we have tones is because Chinese is mono-syllabic. Without tones, a mono-syllabic language like Chinese would not function properly.
i doubt it has anything to do with vocal cords....hahah, I note you also favourited the Chinese accent video from my fellow Aussie.
well, any language can be mono-syllabic but still have very little intonations (like Japanese/Korean/other Asian languages.) They are smoother to pronounce but it has nothing to do with them being mono-syllabic in nature. More so to do with the sound of the words.
In any case, we both may be right, though that doesn't help much haha.
And yes I favorited your fellow Aussie's video. It's on point with the way real Chinese accent is spoken, but moreso in Mandarin accent?
@juslitome...yes, that chick's take on the mandarin accent is quite accurate...although I think she overdid it a little and it sounds a bit like Japanese english.
btw, I wouldn't exactly call Japanese a mono-syllabic language. Korean I agree is mono-syllabic and lacks tones. However, they make up for this with their vocab structure- eg Kamsahamnida is gonna sound like kamsahamnida no matter what tone you use. In Chinese, if you bugger up the tone, the meaning changes with it.
