First.. The conjunction is not clearly limited to a single day, but covers a period of many years. The Sun (and hence also the ecliptic) does not approach the center of the Milky Way to closer than about 5 degrees (which is ten times the apparent size of the Sun and the Moon in the sky), and that happens not on 21 December but around 18 December, and not just in 2012 but in every year.
I was hoping for world to end 1999/2000. At least we would miss that election.
