Actually, not all "red" stars are the smaller ones. Visible light and what people call "colors" are created by waves of electromagnetism and photons, and since they're simply waves, they can stretch over long distances, so a lot of "red" stars you see are simply so far away that the waves of light have stretched to the longest visible wavelength, which is red. So actually, some red stars could be massive.
