Did you know that Barbara Dennerlein plays half of her many concerts per year on pipe organs all over the world? Jazz on pipe organs! She is a master at this, and typically spends a whole day in preparation with a given organ, choosing the registrations. I have had the pleasure of hearing her play the world's largest outdoor pipe organ, in San Diego. She also played a concert in my house.
Why no mention of contemporary jazz B3 players like Joey DiFrancesco, Barbara Dennerlein, Rhoda Scott, Chester Smith, Jared Gold, and other greats? The B3 jazz scene is alive and well. Then there are the many gifted gospel players. Sigh.
The B3 + Leslie 122 = powerful magic! Songs that I love w/B3 include: "Evil Ways" - Santana, "Jesus is Just Alright" - Doobie Bros, "Green-Eyed Lady," "Chicken Pox" by Booker T. Booker T is rad, by the way. I appreciate the perc with jazz music, but it's usually played on Chorus speed (or rotary turned off). But I like the power of the Chorus/Tremolo, screaming up high...like in "Love the One You're With." Cheesy song... but dirty B3 playing! Love it!
Well, that's a rather gratuitous comment. Do you play? —I've owned two Hammonds —Still own my B-e and there is nothing like the sound —Much more versatile, musically, than a pipe organ —A pipe organ is awesome for any J.S. Bach or, anything classical, for that matter —But, for Jazz, Rock and every other genre, the Hammond would be the choice —Just try replacing the Hammond on any Jimmy Smith, Keith Emerson, Jon Lord, Rick Wakeman, et. al. record —It would sound ridiculous...
They have alot more power than what a hammond has. BUT, the sound doesnt always suit the styles hammond organs have fallen into. Theatre pipe organs are what hammond organs where meant to recreate the sound of.
@Pur11zz I'm envious of you just to hear about that. And if you saw them in 70's I'm ENVIOUS :-) Hmm, VDGG on vinyl. Have you got vinyl single "Firebrand" from 1968 ?
@stevemagegenuine Hi, no I do not have the Firebrand single just Pawn hearts LP and another one? and I did have the Radio One theme single by them. A great band.
Hammond is my favorite organ company and has been producing some of the best organ models for many genres of music. I wish they could have showed better Hammond organists instead of guys like Peanut who is mainly a keyboardist only. As well as calling all other organ's rubish was pretty egotistic and uncalled for, I think their are dozens of other companies that do a good job but Hammond is the best in my opinion for rock, blues, jazz, and gospel.
what the fuck is that peanut guy doing in the same place along with keith emerson, steve winwood and jimmy smith???? did you see that guy play? he might be the worst organ player in the world!!! I absolutely hate that guy... I don't even know how could he accept an interview being such amateur comparing to these hammond gods... PATHETIC!
Isn't he technically a keyboardist, they may seem like all the same white and black keys laid out horizontal but they are all different and both feature different playing styles as well as the addition of pedals. Playing organ is like learning an entirely different instrument almost because the style differs a bit from keyboard and piano. I agree where is Joey DeFrancesco, Jon Lord, and Tony Monaco, the true masters of today's B3 artists.
@navespacial Minimal playing, or the huge respect Ska influenced music has for the Hammond is probably what they are addressing with his interview. You know how many songs had a Hammond organ playing just one or two notes? Not everyone has to play like Jimmy Smith or Keith Emerson. I sort of dislike their approach to this video. So Ethel Smith is shit? Is Ken Griffin that '' Ice rink '' Hammond?
Well, actually, there are some clone wheel substitutes for the real thing that are quite excellent (Hammond xk3, Clavia Nord C-1) and they sure beat hauling around a 400 lb. tone wheel.
i cant belive in all the posts naming hammond players nobody has mentioned Barbara Dennerlien at all. she is a german jazz hammond player and in my opinion one of the best, search for her on u tube
Did that one guy say that other organs are rubbish? I respect this style of music, as well as traditional and sacred organ music. I don't understand why he's being so hostile towards other organ styles...
That's James Taylor, who's band did the theme tune to Starsky & Hutch. I think he was referring to other makes that try to recreate the hammond & leslie sound..there's an extended interview with him on the Howard Goodall show.
@jambojazz34 They are keys used as presets. The drawbars which make the various voices on the Hammond are set, then you press one of the black or white keys on the left and it remembers that setting. So once set, you hit one of the keys on the left and you don't have to change the drawbars to get that sound. Some guys use them, others just adjust the drawbars on the fly (drawbars are the little slider knobs which control the voicing as I mentioned).
@DynaflowDonnie That's not quite how presets work. On the back of the organ there's a preset panel with dozens and dozens of terminals and jumper wires. That's how the presets are pre-set. There's no changing them on the fly (without tentacles and several screwdrivers and a mirror).
@jambojazz34 They arent keys that make a sound. When you press one, it changes the sound of the organ to a preset. So when you want to change the sound in a hurry, instead of manipulating the drawbars, you reach over, smack the key you want and the organ changes sound.
Ian Mclagan(small faces)great player ,Warren (the pig )morgan (billy thorpe and the aztecs)added that sweet soul sound to the screamer shouter hard rockin that the late sixties produced and into the seventies, lord ,airey, etc ..great ,still like the gospel ...
The revival of hammond-organs began in the 80es with Prisoners, Jtq... In the mid eighties digital was almost gone. Everything was acoustic, "unplugged".
Cool. Check out another amazing Hammond Player the great Chester Thompson who has been with Carlos Santana for the last 20 odd years and before that Tower of Power since the late 60's
I have played the Hammond for years and I don't think there's any other organ that can give the real gospel sound. Personally, I think all others sound like video games. Like the old Atari we had as kids. LOL
A lot of history there, but if you're interested and consider yourself a big Hammond fan you should get the book "Beauty In The B" by Mark Vail. There's a pic of Jimmy Smith on the front. It's the consumate information source on Laurens Hammond and his inventions. They say he was tone deaf. Great man. Changed our lives for the better.
Sure would like to know how Steve Winwood got that funky growl on "Gimme Some Lovin"..
Thanks, but it's more than that. They had little tricks of the trade.Sometimes it might be swapping the 12AU7 for a 12AX7.I had 2 leslies/hammonds and I could never get that sound out of them. A guy that I knew that rented Hammond/Leslies to all the big groups that played Charleston,WV did a small "operation" on my 122 that boosted it 15 watts. He wouldn't tell me what he did. That was back in the late '60's. They had tricks. THanks again.
Yes they did! I played piano for a gospel singer that literally ROCKS the Hammond. Nancy Harmon played under the tents with some of the big evangelists and she had some BOMB tricks that I would have never thought of. I did hear of switching out some tubes but the guy that played for her albums in DFW wouldn't reveal the details. Secret recipes! LOL
Like the fender telecaster and the vox ac 30 These instruments try as others may cannot be equaled let alone betered. I only have a Hammond t200 but with a voce spin 2 it's as good as I will get on my budget. The hammond will live forever
Great video ! What would Jazz and 60s / 70s music be without the Hammond ? And people like Peanut (though I personally dislike that music) prove that the Hammond is a timeless piece of music history even today. Long live the tonewheel Hammonds ! Got a very nice 1962 C3 myself and I use it with my Blues band every day. God bless Laurens Hammond for that important invention !!!
Its from the BBC's archive and not commercially available - but luckily for you there is MUCH better US footage of Jimmy Smith in 1962 on 'Jazz Scene USA'...its available on DVD...get on Ebay!
Ice Rink Organs - Cheesy, we had a great organist at Birmingham Silver Blades Ice Rink - played great Jazz and Blues. Unfortunately it's no longer there..
Ah, I feel much better. But you shouldn't do that with ANY organ! It's like with food: People in Africa are starving, so we shouldn't throw away food that is still edible.
Same with organs: You mustn't kick around an organ while poor European musicians can't even efford such a sacred instrument!
Yep, the L 100 is smaller and sounds a little thinner than a B3/C3/A100. A B3 would be too heavy to wrestle with and the person who tries would probably end up with the legs of the B3 and his own legs broken. Not recommendable...
it's true that Goldings style is very different and nuanced, the "Saudades" album with Trio Beyond is example of how different Larry Golding's approach thing. I guess ppl going apeshit for JOS I have for years as a fan but learned to love other players. People never having heard of Groove Holmes? wow..
Nice production. Really enjoyed it. I miss my B3. BIG TIME! I sold it in 75 to go to Berklee. I don't regret going to Berklee. But in hindsight (20 20), Id've been better off had I kept the B3 and gone to Brklee later by other means. I've had a career in music, but sadly, never the B3. Had a nice Leslie too. My first girlfrend was named Leslie Speaker, true. Still play one whenever I can. Your tribute made me nostalgic. I want one again before join the happy hunters. Thx
gingervytis, JOS over hyped? now I love Jack McDuff, John Patton, Lonnie Smith, Johnny Hammond, but Jimmy Smith over hyped? I don't think so. In later years I think he watered his approach down for audiences, but he did some AMAZING things on his Blue Note albums, especially his first 15 which are essential in his development.
No offense was intended. I said "*typically* over hyped". I respect JOS' legacy, and I know it's often said that Joey D is a JOS clone... (well, JOS willed all his gear to JD). Anyway, a lot of go people apeshit over JOS and apparently have never heard of Groove Holmes, Wild Bill Davis, Moe Denham, even Larry Goldings. And by the way, just *try* to go from a JOS style to a Goldings style... very non-linear, very different, and some very difficult stuff, indeed.
This is nothing but a narrow attempt at "A History of the Hammond Organ". Substanstively, it is rather lame. There is only one reference to the typically over-hyped Smith, worsened by excessive examples of the pathetic use of the Hammond organ in pop music.
I kind of enjoyed it. I could have done without the maming of the organ ala Keith Emerson. It was like witnessing a rape. But as it goes, he spoke about a wide range. The finer points of the history of that instrument could fill volumes. Peace.
I WANT A HAMMOND!!! As one of the musicians says in the clip "every other organ sounds like rubbish compared to it", o.k. maybe thats not true but i have played on so many electronic organs in several years nowin my quest for the ultimate organ and they are all so god damn cheesy compared to the hammond-sound and it makes me mad that these Hammonds costs a fortune! I also think that the instrument itself are greater and more complete in itself than most of its performers troughout the years.
Syca...we had 9 and a half minutes to cover 70 years of music history and it just wasnt possible to include all the most important players - we did consider intervieing Jon Lord - but we had Keith Emerson who covered the prog/rock end of Hammond sounds - and we cetrtainly intended to show the black (gospel/jazz) music roots of the Hammond Organ - one day I will get to make the full length documentary about the Hammond - and Jon Lord would certainly feature in that!
Well, thanks for the answer, although I disagree with your argumentation. Keith doesn`t cover Jon. He`s different(prog. as you said). Jon used a Marshall guitar amp during his prime time, not a Leslie in order to get those overdriven sounds. That would have been a very interesting fact to mention, and it prooves, how complex the Hammond really is. I understand that you wanted to show some contemporary organ player, but that peanut guy is an emberrasment. Jon instead of him?
I agree about the inclusion of Peanut (that was the directors decision) My choice of a contemporary organist would hav been Dr Lonnie Smith. We didnt delve deeply into the mechanics of the organ, it was a documentary that went out on mainstream TV - it was made for your average joe to watch, not organ fanatics! Jon Lord wasnt the only UK organist who didnt use Leslies - Brian Auger also stopped using in the mid 60's.
I know, and He was classically trained and could probably top Emmerson or anyone on that list as a great Hammond player, they should have had Rod Argent on as well. But Peanut of Kaiser Chiefs? meh I say! Meh!
The Kaiser Chiefs were favourites of the director...who in the usual TV person thought she newbetter than the experts....If I'd had my way it would have included Groove Holmes, The New Mastersounds, Dr Lonnie Smith, Brian Auger - and less of me!
Hey Greg, how is that full length documentary about the Hammond going?:) You know, these legends aren't going to walk among us forever. RIP Jimmy Smith.

DynaflowDonnie 1 year ago
@DynaflowDonnie That's not quite how presets work. On the back of the organ there's a preset panel with dozens and dozens of terminals and jumper wires. That's how the presets are pre-set. There's no changing them on the fly (without tentacles and several screwdrivers and a mirror).
janus303 1 year ago
@jambojazz34 They arent keys that make a sound. When you press one, it changes the sound of the organ to a preset. So when you want to change the sound in a hurry, instead of manipulating the drawbars, you reach over, smack the key you want and the organ changes sound.

Lord Rulez...
I wanted to know the name of that spinning speaker he use
bozzo83 3 years ago
It's a Leslie speaker. It's the key to the hammond sound. Though Lord mostly used marshall guitar amps apparently.
analoghell 3 years ago
Lord only used Marshalls between 70-73(during the best Purple period), so mostly is definitely not the right word...
Sycsa 3 years ago
@analoghell He started using leslies again in 1973.

The 80s were just weird... anything that wasn't digital was practically taboo for a while there.
Ouch on the crossfade between versions of Gimme Some Lovin at not quite the same pitch... :)

The revival of hammond-organs began in the 80es with Prisoners, Jtq... In the mid eighties digital was almost gone. Everything was acoustic, "unplugged".

Sure would like to know how Steve Winwood got that funky growl on "Gimme Some Lovin"..

he was overdriving the amps in the leslies....

THanks again.
drdave25 4 years ago
Yes they did! I played piano for a gospel singer that literally ROCKS the Hammond. Nancy Harmon played under the tents with some of the big evangelists and she had some BOMB tricks that I would have never thought of. I did hear of switching out some tubes but the guy that played for her albums in DFW wouldn't reveal the details. Secret recipes! LOL

RickTheRobot 4 years ago
It's not a B3 he's trashing - it's an L100.
analoghell 4 years ago
Ah, I feel much better. But you shouldn't do that with ANY organ! It's like with food: People in Africa are starving, so we shouldn't throw away food that is still edible.
Same with organs: You mustn't kick around an organ while poor European musicians can't even efford such a sacred instrument!
RickTheRobot 4 years ago
Keith Emerson didn't thrash it completely, the roadie fixed it after every night, so it is the same organ...
dauinghorn 4 years ago
That's good to know. It would really be a shame to waste an organ gig after gig.
RickTheRobot 4 years ago

Thx

What the hell is that Peanut doing there? Unbelievable the original design of the Hammond organs was a portable church-organ
HammondB200 4 years ago
gingervytis, JOS over hyped? now I love Jack McDuff, John Patton, Lonnie Smith, Johnny Hammond, but Jimmy Smith over hyped? I don't think so. In later years I think he watered his approach down for audiences, but he did some AMAZING things on his Blue Note albums, especially his first 15 which are essential in his development.
CJ81 4 years ago
No offense was intended. I said "*typically* over hyped". I respect JOS' legacy, and I know it's often said that Joey D is a JOS clone... (well, JOS willed all his gear to JD). Anyway, a lot of go people apeshit over JOS and apparently have never heard of Groove Holmes, Wild Bill Davis, Moe Denham, even Larry Goldings. And by the way, just *try* to go from a JOS style to a Goldings style... very non-linear, very different, and some very difficult stuff, indeed.
gingervytis 4 years ago
This is nothing but a narrow attempt at "A History of the Hammond Organ". Substanstively, it is rather lame. There is only one reference to the typically over-hyped Smith, worsened by excessive examples of the pathetic use of the Hammond organ in pop music.
gingervytis 4 years ago

Sycsa 4 years ago
Syca...we had 9 and a half minutes to cover 70 years of music history and it just wasnt possible to include all the most important players - we did consider intervieing Jon Lord - but we had Keith Emerson who covered the prog/rock end of Hammond sounds - and we cetrtainly intended to show the black (gospel/jazz) music roots of the Hammond Organ - one day I will get to make the full length documentary about the Hammond - and Jon Lord would certainly feature in that!
Gber 4 years ago
Well, thanks for the answer, although I disagree with your argumentation. Keith doesn`t cover Jon. He`s different(prog. as you said). Jon used a Marshall guitar amp during his prime time, not a Leslie in order to get those overdriven sounds. That would have been a very interesting fact to mention, and it prooves, how complex the Hammond really is. I understand that you wanted to show some contemporary organ player, but that peanut guy is an emberrasment. Jon instead of him?
Sycsa 4 years ago
I agree about the inclusion of Peanut (that was the directors decision) My choice of a contemporary organist would hav been Dr Lonnie Smith. We didnt delve deeply into the mechanics of the organ, it was a documentary that went out on mainstream TV - it was made for your average joe to watch, not organ fanatics! Jon Lord wasnt the only UK organist who didnt use Leslies - Brian Auger also stopped using in the mid 60's.
Gber 4 years ago 2
I think Jon Lord is Gereatest "Rock"-Organist.

I know, and He was classically trained and could probably top Emmerson or anyone on that list as a great Hammond player, they should have had Rod Argent on as well. But Peanut of Kaiser Chiefs? meh I say! Meh!
KTalon86 4 years ago
The Kaiser Chiefs were favourites of the director...who in the usual TV person thought she newbetter than the experts....If I'd had my way it would have included Groove Holmes, The New Mastersounds, Dr Lonnie Smith, Brian Auger - and less of me!
