@hekoka Thanks so much for the kind words! I have REALLY got to redo these basic vids and polish them up, lol. these were all done at about 2 in the morning with almost no planning or preparation--and they could be so much better... thanks again for watching !!
Have you ever considered teaching as a profession? I've been playing for 5 years now. Slap bass isn't really my thing, but i admire the style and you obviously know what you're doing and your teaching style is very nice and easy to follow.
PLEASE somebody explain to me this....my strings seem to be to high from the "ground"...the base...so when I slap them, they berelly touch the metal stripes, and there is no sound.....what am I sopose to do?! Thank you!
if you have an allan key, you can use the truss rod to adjust the neck... as far as I know you just have to loosen the strings completely so that there is no tension on the neck first, but you should see if there's anybody who's done it before first to show you... I've never actually done it myself, and I wouldn't recommend experimenting unless you're absolutely sure what you're doing. It is the neck.
hey ubertuber57 im started to play bass for 2 months ago on my school, and that you do, havent i lerned on my school but i see a other it play bass its do that so thx for more info about the bass, and how to do it, one more thing do you know what songs i shall start whit when im 2 months in? and sorry my bad english
You took very basic moves necessary to play percussively on bass and morphed into a really nice groove within five minutes, it's good to have veteran bassists on YouTube like yourself giving quality instruction. Aren't you the guy that got Tommy the Cat by Primus correct?
Nope, never did a Claypool video. Killer player/ riff though. (first time I saw that video in college was one of 2 memorable jaw-dropping musical moments in those years -- the "Over my Head" video by King's X was the other, fwiw)
5 stars! i've been trying to learn slap bass for a few days, but up until whatching this video ive been finding it quite hard. dont take this offensively but if i saw you in the street i really wouldnt expect you to be such a great slap bass player haha, thanks very much!
FWIW, when I was about 18-19 and starting to play slap-style, I kinda liked the incongruous match of funk bass and me as the skinny kid with glasses... it made me try a little harder (and actually relax a LOT, since the expectations would always start out pretty low :) )
thanks again for watching! Here's to you finding your voice on the instrument!
quick question: when I slap I get a big bang off the bass, think it's the string hitting off the fretboard or something. This guy gets it too, but I hear a lot of funk records and they just don't have that bang in it, the bass sounds a lot better. How do i get rid of it? I've tried changing technique but no matter what I do I still get that big bang when I slap and pop
Thanks for watching! It very well may require you to raise the height of the strings (action) enough that when you strike the string, it doesn't hit the frets.
There are times where the other instruments can help mask the attack on the thumbed notes, but overall, I'd say find the tone that you prefer to start with.
I can't tell you how glad I am to hear this worked for you! Keep working on mixing up your own combinations at different tempos, wo you'll be able to use 'em on demand.

I think re-doing is not needed, they are very clear. I haven't found any other video that explains slapping as clearly as you do. New video's would be great! Until then I'll be practising this suff, gonna try one of the songs you play later on :)
Wow awsome lesson. I've played guitar for about 8 monthts, and yesterday i got a bass and a bass amp. Its awsome learning bass. Completely different techniques and everything!
man, if only i saw this when i was learning slap and pop. you explained everything that i struggled with perfectly. From just having a good pattern to play, to the wrist motion and not playing with your arms... man these vids would have saved me months... great job again.
Man, I don't even own a bass but yet I feel like I can already go through the motions thanks to you're vids. I'll be tryin' to get a bass over the summer, thanks man!
hey thax for the quick lesson man i am going to check the other ones out but i always like to learn more how to slap i know a little bit but this helped a lot.
thanks for watching! I'm glad it's not overwhelming. I seriously need to re-do these videos and get rid of the glitches and some other things. trying to get time to do it over the summer. Again, thanks!
Hm i have problems with the left-hand 'slap'... i try to not make an unintended hammeron but it often happens. further the string I play the 'nr. 1' on rattles when i slap with the left hand :S
First, thanks for watching! the 'rattle' sounds like it goes together with the accidental hammer-on. When you realease the pressure from the hammer-on, you get the fret buzz. For the muted LH note (No.2) try to lay the pads of your 2nd and 3rd fingers (instead of the tips) across the string, while slightly shifting the weight from your 1st finger to the 2/3rd (unles the No.1) is an open string of course) :D Go slow and be patient. Let me know how it's owrking, and again, thanks.
I just watched your second beginner movie and I want to say that that's really good too! No other one on youtube teaches so easy understandable. Thanks :D
I really appreciate the feedback. I've been meaning to re-do the first several of these, as trying to do it in 30 sec clips really sucked. Can't believe it's nearly been a year, as I just did these for fun. I'm really glad you found something that works for you. There's lots of good players out there...
thanks!ive bin looking for a video like this for ages, all the other ones are to confusing. dont suppose u could bring out more videos on slap please?
thank u every other video was so confusing but this one actually made sense also i liked the way u presented it nice and slow and didnt just jump right into it
Thanks! Glad to hear all your hard work has paid off. I'm very honored that the video helped you see how to use all the work you've already done before!
Hey man i dont know if you still check your comments on here but this is the first video that has actually helped me learn how to play!!! after all that trying to figure it out, this video made it work!!
Awesome! Glad to hear it. Sounds like you had it all there already with your hard work. Very humbled to help you put it together. I still remember the day when it all clicked, all of a sudden...
im struggling a lil with my slap bass can you tell me about the finger positions for the right hand my thumb supposed to face down and strike with side? and fingers arc up to pop?
Ultimately, do what's comfortable. It's a bit more about being relaxed, than exact positioning, as everybody's built differently. I hit the string with the side of my thumb on the tip side of the thumb kncukle, FWIW. May/may not work as well for you.
On the 'muting' part...do you mean the RH (plucking hand) with the index finger? (ie: the "3 -4 - 3 - 4" bit?)
If you're having trouble with that part in the 1-2-3-4 pattern, maybe try this: Since your RH will 'strike' the bass in a steady rhythm...think of the "1" (thumb) as the bass drum and the "3" (index finger/whole hand mute) as the snare drum in a basic drum beat. focus on the finger getting under the string when you hit, and just relax the whole RH. might help?
Ive had problems with finger picking and attempting slap and pop, ive self taught for about four months and am worried ive got some bad habits. When i "slap" all i do is pop with my thumb, ive seen videos where people appear to strike the string with the side of the thumb but i cant always get a sound or technique
It actually depends a lot on how your bass and amp sound to start with. ie: If your bass is thin-sounding then you can add some bass. I'm thinking about working on a vid on some basic sound adjustments and such. Thanks for watching
What area is giving you the trouble: The quality of sound, or the coordination? the coordination is simply time...You'll have to play slower than you'd like for longer than you'd like. :D Spend the time playing it RIGHT, no matter how slow.
FWIW, I see Victor Wooten and it makes me consider being a plumber instead... :)
Probably the best video lesson on beginner slap I've seen on YouTube. I kinda try the technique but I've been an alternative/punk/new wave guy so... now I'm actually trying to get better at least for an amateur.
Lol :D Nah, it's an American Hamer 'Cruise' bass from the mid-90s. Basic J-style bass, but pickups spaced a little closer together, for a little punchier tone. Also has a 2-TEK bridge. I've played some Warwicks and liked 'em, but just didn't mesh with me ergonomically as well as some other basses. Nice basses, though.
thxs very much for the vid u make it sound so easy... can i make a video to send to you? i kinda get it but still sometimes it doesn't go... anyway ur awsome! cheers
one problem tho...I can do the part when you flick your wrist up, but i can't do the part when you hit your thumb against the string.
I have a feeling that maybe the string is too far away from the fretboard, but does that affect the ability to play slap? if it does is there a way to fix it? because i have a really cheap bass..lol
Hi! If the string is pretty high off the fingerboard, it can make a difference, in that a bit of the thumb percussive sound is the string hitting off the frets. Higher action typically means you need to work harder--but you can get a bit more sustain and slightly fuller tone with higher action, especially if you play hard. Check your trussroud if it needs adjustment. If you're not familiar with that, a tech should be able to tell easily.
Yeah. Not a huge chance, but still worth being careful. More liely, it's possible to strip the nut for adjusting the rod, then you're really screwed.. :D
rough test: Push the string down at the 1st and last frets at the same time (using both hands, or cousre) and look from the side at about the middle of the neck and see how much space there is between the string and frets. If there's say, a gap of more than a dime's thickness, then tightening might be a good idea. What kind of bass?
I don't understand what i'm doing wrong, but im following this lesson and others, and none of it seems to work. for example, when i hit my thumb off the string, it just sounds the 24th fret really lightly and rattles a bit. can someone help?
that really helped me out with the technique of how to slap...i never really figured out how to do it until you described it how you did...thanks bro!
Was so afraid of slap bass so didn't try it. Decided i did, looked at your video and i can already play. Great video

Ultimately, do what's comfortable. It's a bit more about being relaxed, than exact positioning, as everybody's built differently. I hit the string with the side of my thumb on the tip side of the thumb kncukle, FWIW. May/may not work as well for you.
Thanks for watching!

thankx man, i can now slap and pop at a well... beginers level. but still im having some trouble with the muting part, is it my bass or me?
jaysan41 3 years ago

When i "slap" all i do is pop with my thumb, ive seen videos where people appear to strike the string with the side of the thumb but i cant always get a sound or technique

are there any particular sort of settings on the amp that you need to get a good slap sound?
tinselworm 3 years ago
It actually depends a lot on how your bass and amp sound to start with. ie: If your bass is thin-sounding then you can add some bass. I'm thinking about working on a vid on some basic sound adjustments and such. Thanks for watching

Thanks, man. That means a lot. I used to get frustrated as a beginner kid, as there wasn't much instruction for this at the time.
Glad it's helping. Here's to you reaching your goals!

dude man ive been trying all day but i cant do it.i feel like givin up my guitar
sardhikhaansi 3 years ago
What area is giving you the trouble: The quality of sound, or the coordination? the coordination is simply time...You'll have to play slower than you'd like for longer than you'd like. :D Spend the time playing it RIGHT, no matter how slow.
FWIW, I see Victor Wooten and it makes me consider being a plumber instead... :)
Don't quit. Keep it up!
ubertuber57 3 years ago
actually m havin trouble with my right hand i dont really get exactly wat 2 do
sardhikhaansi 3 years ago
Is it the slap or the pop part--or just the overall coordination that's giving you the trouble?
ubertuber57 3 years ago
da whole concept

btw...what tuning r u in???
JELLOFACTORY 3 years ago
LOL, it was SUPPOSED to be A=440, but I hardly ever tune with a tuner, if I'm not at a gig.
I expect, I'm probably a bit flat...
Thanks again for the kind words!

Probably the best video lesson on beginner slap I've seen on YouTube. I kinda try the technique but I've been an alternative/punk/new wave guy so... now I'm actually trying to get better at least for an amateur.
GVike 3 years ago
Cool. really glad it's helped!
ubertuber57 3 years ago
very helpful, thanks
i still have a hard time making my slapping clean.
slikyle 3 years ago
You're welcome.
Lol, me n you both on trying to play cleanly. There comes a point where the thing that sometimes help most is to simply relax.
Again, thanks for watching!
ubertuber57 3 years ago
Grr...is that a damned Warwick? If so, my jealousy is unmatched.
ahamilton93 3 years ago
Nice guitar either way, though. Need to pick up my bass and figure out how to play it.
ahamilton93 3 years ago
Lol :D Nah, it's an American Hamer 'Cruise' bass from the mid-90s. Basic J-style bass, but pickups spaced a little closer together, for a little punchier tone. Also has a 2-TEK bridge. I've played some Warwicks and liked 'em, but just didn't mesh with me ergonomically as well as some other basses. Nice basses, though.
Thanks for watching!

awesome vid helped me a lot!
one problem tho...I can do the part when you flick your wrist up, but i can't do the part when you hit your thumb against the string.
I have a feeling that maybe the string is too far away from the fretboard, but does that affect the ability to play slap? if it does is there a way to fix it? because i have a really cheap bass..lol
guyinaponcho00 3 years ago
Let me know if it helps, okay? thanks!
ubertuber57 3 years ago
Thank you so much! I didn't even know the truss rod existed :). Is there a chance of breaking the bass or strings if you turn the bolt the wrong way?
guyinaponcho00 3 years ago
What kind of bass?
ubertuber57 3 years ago
It's a precision bass. not fender, but pretty much the same thing. It was cheaper :)
guyinaponcho00 3 years ago
Any luck figuring if the action was a bit high? (I'm considering trying a vid on basic setup stuff...)
ubertuber57 3 years ago
thanks you helped me alot! :)

ubertuber57 3 years ago
I don't understand what i'm doing wrong, but im following this lesson and others, and none of it seems to work. for example, when i hit my thumb off the string, it just sounds the 24th fret really lightly and rattles a bit. can someone help?
nZymes 3 years ago
that really helped me out with the technique of how to slap...i never really figured out how to do it until you described it how you did...thanks bro!
