This is outstanding. Has to be a California subdivision? ..architectural wasteland complete with power lines beyond. Love it! Looks like Piet Mondrian painted your garage door!
Hello!when I work in 3d models. I have difficulty because the drawing becomes to heavy to work in it and make to make the rendering. If I put trees it becomes almost impossible. Do you have a powerfull pc to be able to do that?I work in revit but i've heard that GS as the same difficulties.
It is a walk through not an architecture tutorial...its charming and shows how much you can do in SU and only SU so the houses could be components. Aren't most neighbourhoods or hoods as i should say init...made that way.
Thanks For checking it out, Keith. Actually, It's a time machine. I used SU to recreate the neighborhood I lived in as a child. Conjured up mostly from memory. It's not an architectural tutorial, true. It's typical early 60's cookie cutter middle class American subdivision sprawl that lulled us into what we are now. And you've read in the papers lately how that's all turned out.
I rendered the walkthrough in three separate parts. (It took a long time to render each.) The renders were saved as .avi files. I assembled them back together in Sony Vegas as well as adding in all the sound. I outputted the movie to (Windows media) .wmv to upload to Youtube (based on settings I got from others, that were supposed to produce the best quality for Youtube playback).
ah....thank you! i managed to figure it out using Scenes then update each scene and save it as an .avi... thank you. i'm trying to use kerkythea with my walkthrough..i dont know how. by the way, i'm an Architeture student ^^ thanks!
It's funny. I sampled (recorded) that gate latch from the home that I live in now. Now every time I go through it and and hear that sound, I too, am transported. And I'm going through that SketchUp gate, as you are, only back in time to that house that I grew up in.
I had a comment from someone that said, "How did you make the cars move in SketchUp?" Well, they don't. That's the magic that occurs when you add sound to video! That's cool! Thanks for checking out my video!
My mother painted that on the garage door. I think that was her statement to the banality of middle-class suburbia and her being stuck in it. To her, it was De Stijl, Neoplasticism. People in the neighborhood just referred to it as the house with the "Partridge Family' garage door. They thought David Cassidy and Danny Bonaduce instead of Piet Mondrian or Van Doesburg. I think that says it all. It's too late to know now but I think she was thumbing her nose at them.
How did you manage to create this neighborhood model in sketchup?
I need to know what technique you used so I can try it out for my 2D animation layout. I also wanna know how you managed to move through your model for this video.
I imported a 2D image of the neighborhood from Google Earth and measured and built from there. Since they were 'tract homes' once you built one you can easily make copies to populate your 'hood. As well with plants, trees, fencing etc. you copy and reuse. As far as moving through the model, just add 'Scenes' in Sketchup to move the camera from one location to the next. I rendered the video then added the sound effects to make footsteps, birds, lawnmowers, etc.
Great job. Could you help me, I have a few question 1.) How did you put the sky effect to your mdel. 2.)How did you do the walking, specially in the interior. I builted a house using sketchup, and can't get it to do an inerior walk . Can you recoment me any tutorials. I have watched a lot here in youtube which helped me build the house, but I can make an Anymation/walk. 3) How did you got the scene/walk trough into video to post it here. Thanks, and I hope you can help me.
Thanks. I set the 'sky' to a nice lime green color so that I could greenscreen (chromakey) it out in my movie editing program, Sony Vegas. I render (PC) to .wmv file format to upload to YouTube. Search for upload tips here at Youtube. I still am trying to figure out how to get the best video quality.Hold down ALT to disable collision detection when 'walking'. From 'Scene' to 'Scene' you should pass right through. Does that help?
It looks really great man! The sound effects are timed perfectly! How big is your computer actually, only a strong computer could create such a big sketchup model. I could never do this on my computer. Even if my compuer was strong enough I could never make something like this. You did a realy great job!
There are a ton of tutorials on youtube to help with sketchup. Essentially, with this video I cut out the camera pauses at each "Scene" stop in the flythru and added sound effects in my video editing program Sony Vegas. Turning on 'shadows', adding textures, and 'greenscreening' in a sky also helped.
In Sketchup, you set up 'Scenes' which are camera positions. If you render an animation, you'll fly from one scene position to the next with a pause at each scene position. I render the animation then in 'Sony Vegas' cut out all the pauses and stretch or compress the scene segments to smooth out the speed of the 'fly thru'. The 'walking' is a sound effect audio loop. You don't see the cars move, that's an audio clip. The movie 'magic' is the sounds.
I believe I got them from the 'google warehouse'. They have all kinds of models that various people have submitted. Some are really, really good. The plants and trees I got are for the most part 2D. An I believe I re-sized them or changed their aspect ratio to mix it up a little. I also applied my own 'leaves' bit-mapped textures to a bunch of them. Again to lend some variations to their shape and color.
Regarding the all the lines, try Window>Preferences>Drawing then uncheck the "Display crosshairs" in Miscellanous. I also get problems if I'm not in Open GL mode, Window>Preferences>Open GL. See what settings work best with you video card.
There's two main differences. There are 3D trees that are made of a lot of triangles (for the leaves). They can slow things down if your model is populated with too many of them. The more efficient and better looking, to me, are the 2D ones. They can look fuller and you can texture map in the leaves for a little more realism. You can set them to always face the camera, so you'll never see around them. It's a little creepy though, in that they move when you move. They're always 'staring' at you.
can i download it?

This is pretty cool. I do like the garage door, stands out from all the other dull ones I guess.
I built my house using SketchUp but I didnt do any scenes like this. Its just simply the model.

Yeah, everybody in the neighborhood knew which house was ours.
Hey, your SketchUp stuff looks good to me. Keep it up!

I think the sound efx really make it. A post (below) asked how did I make the cars move so I know the sound efx worked!
My home built computer is a Pentium 4 3.2Ghz, 3gig Ram, w/Radeon A9600XT video card.
The ultimate .skp file size was 15.8mb. That's a pretty big model. I'm no expert but I think how fast your video card is the biggest factor.
I did have to turn off the shadows & textures toward the end just to get around in the model. It took a lot of (time and) patience.
Thanks a lot.
