  • the best play off ever !!!!!

  • One major problem is the size of goalies and the equiptment that they use. Goalies used to be 5'7 and are much bigger and cover more net. They could make the nets slightly bigger. Raise the cross bar 4 inches and widen the net 6 inches-but too many traditionalists would go nuts.

  • My main pt was how the game has been tinkered a bit 2 much in the past 10+ yrs (Rule changes-expansion) Like i said b4 guys like S Stevens, J Beukaboom, R Pilon would be in jail with todays ticky-tac rules (Nevermind the old skool bruins) The whole point is the league (Campbell and co) are legislating the emotion out of the game, we wont see playoff series like this 1 or Det-Col in 87 or even Isles/Tor in 2002 and thats a shame. All i have said is leave rules alone + let the boys play - simple!

  • The rule changes, for the most part, have been great. I understand the ticky tac calls can be annoying, but it's made the game MUCH faster. Guys like Milan Lucic can still play their game, so it's not turned into dancing on ice. The B's Canadians series was VERY physical and exciting...probably not so much if you're a Canadians fan, but the games were intense even in a sweep.

I watched the Caps rangers 2 flipping back and fourth, and Ovechkin was phenominal last night...even in a loss.

  • watch a playoff game from the 80's or 90's and then from today. the game was much better then. todays hockey is like a soccer game, not the game it was, and going nowhere.

  • I disagree about the game. Do I miss the brawls? Sure....growing up as a hockey fan in Boston during the 1970's, I grew up thinking that if there wasn't at least 3 fights during the game, it was boring. But the speed of the game has improved dramatically! No more whistle every 45 seconds because of an off sides, and games don't take 3 and a half hours to play anymore.

  • do you remember the days, of when you saw the pre game line up and you saw, say the rangers, dress kocur, domi, and say a kypreos. you knew it was gonna be a great hard nose game. i miss that. i think there should be on 4th line enforcer. other then that, load up the talented tough guys.

  • As long as the enforcer isnt a completely useless player like Twist was after the steroids, then I don't have a problem with it. Twist was so bad, he could barely skate forward, let alone backwards.

  • Now the lame argument is that Goons are needed to police Europeans and their stick work. If a Eurotrash player sticks someone, guys like Lucic and Pronger are more than capable of delivering a viscious beating so that the Euro player never does it again. As popular as Twist is in St Louis, his popularity doesn't even touch Cam Neely's.

  • Hockey has failed because players like Hartman who were never elite fighters or even respectable players, attacked non fighters without cause. They wanted to stir the pot and change momentum. When players did that to Gretzky, hockey realized that it hurt the sport! Aside from McSorley and Semenko, refs watched Wayne's ass!

If 2 player like Neely and Tocchet wanted to go, have at it! They are who we pay to see! But goons without talent set hockey back.

    O'Reilly-YES Tocchet-YES Mitch Fritz-NO!

  • BoSox72 - bro your overstating the case against the tough guys. Tough guys CAN change the momentum with a big hit or fight and theres NOTHING wrong with that, nothing! Did Peter Worrell set 'hockey back'? Love him or hate him 'his type' of player was VERY entertaining to watch! He used to run people over like bowling pins and you HAD to watch him the second the 6'6' monster stepped on the ice, he hit EVERYTHING and thats whats GREAT about hockey It makes hockey unique and sadly its changing 2bad

  • Kid, you miss the point. I'm not against fighting at all-it's one of the most exciting things about the sport...but what held hockey back was when guys who were fighters went after non fighters to try and spark their team. Guys like Neely, Tocchet ,& Wendel Clark were the type of players that sold tickets! They need more players like Milan Lucic and Jerome Iginla, and less people like Laraque and Mitch Fritz. In order to bring in fringe fans, you can't have choreographed fights lacking passion!

  • Ooo Bosox your BREAKING my heart, you really are - I CANNOT BELIEVE you are 'buying the hype' with this nonsense 'choreographed fights', arrgghhh NOT YOU! This is such a silly discussion, what determines a staged fight? whos the arbitor? whos the judge/jury? - should they skate for 3 seconds after faceoff and then fight? -What if it was from a dirty hit early in the game? or last game and NOW he has his chance - Arrgh i hate when i hear that.. Listen were both fans, leave the rules alone, please

  • I'm not buying into any hype. I want hockey to become more popular in the US-abd not just on the Versus Network, which many cable affiliates don't even carry! By having guys like Mitch Fritz in the league who do NOTHING other than fight, you're taking a job away from a guy that can skate a regular 4th line shift and fight-A guy like Shawn Thornton or Riley Cote. One dimentional goons have been detrimental to NHL growth. I want a hockey player than can fight, not a fighter wearing skates.

  • I hear ya BoSox but Hocky is a VERY different game with different tradtions. Ya want it to grow? DONT "handcuff" possible rivalries with DOPEY MEMOS not allowing physical play in playoffs. Dont have double standards when a player breaks the rules (Which C Campbell does ALL the time) - Ya know what? a game with a lil ugliness will make the next game that more INTENSE. BTW i disagree 110% that goons are 'detrimental' Twist? probaly the 2nd-3rd most popular player in StL! Domi? popular? etc, etc

  • I didn't say those players weren't popular, but they are detrimental to hockeys growth. If no teams have goons, then you wont need to police other teams goons with a goon. You could sent Lucic after Iginla...you could send Joe Thornton after Pronger. When Gordie Howe played, he didn't need a guy like Probert to police the other teams-he policed them himself-and NOBODY fucked with him more than once! I want more players like that-that will score, hit and kick ass.

  • Based on "what source" does the goons hurt the games growth? sorry i dont see it at all, thats nonsense. The loudest cheers in a hockey game are a nice pass, goal, nice save, big hit and fight! no ifs/ends-buts. You keep mentioning Neely, Tochett, W Clark, Iginlia etc - those players are very rare and tough to find, they dont grow on trees lol. The new rule changes have pissed off ALOT of real fans like myself, who are fans 20 yrs. When u just touch a guy and its a penalty it cheapens the game

  • Based on what source? How about just a basic understanding of how corporate sponsorship and national television contracts work? Even Don Cherry concedes that they affect the growth and expansion of the game's popularity. He doesn't care though. He'd rather have the sport stay the way it is. People forget- Cherry's teams didn't have goons! O'Reilly led the Bruins in scoring with 90 pts, Jonathan was a 27 goal scorer, Wensink had 28 goals. Don's team had 11 guys score 20 goals the same season!

  • I couldn't disagree with you more! Apparently you didn't watch what the game had evolved to after the exciting game of the 80's and early 90's where there was the toughness of the 70's with new speed, better skating and harder shooting. By the mid to late 90's, the neutral zone trap was destroying the game. Games went from 4-3 on average, to 3-2 and 2-1. Teams like NJ were boring as hell to watch and winning cups. The game was EXPONENTIALLY WORSE than at any period Ive ever seen!

  • So let me get this straight, u think fights turn people off? Do u want to take a poll at the people who pay and attend games? Ive seen polls in the 80+% that they enjoy fighting. - How could Scott Stevens or Jeff Beukaboom or Rich Pilon compete in todays 'ticky-tac' penalties? These were all SOLID-POPULAR D-man and they would b in Sibera with the BS officating 2day! Todays game has changed 4 the worse, ok the skill level is slightly higher but the emotion and passion is dying slowly and it sux

  • Again, you are RETARDED. Nobody said that 80% of the paying fans dont enjoy fighting! How about asking this question...which is one never posed by idiots like you! Ask the fans if they would rather see Cam Neely fight Rick Tocchet and see a hockey game, or if theyd rather see Mitch Fritz fight Dave Morisette?

Again, I am not lobbying to get rid of fighting you assclown!

Ask yourself this-Laraque is still considered the heavyweight champ-how did that improve montreal-the 1 seed from a year ago?

  • OK so i admit i was wrong/made a mistake with the 20 goal scoring per team talking point but thats not a reason to attack or insulted by you, i thought we have having a good honest debate till you got your panties in a bunch and INSULTED, nice job sunshine...My point was you never had the trapt/left wing lock b4 expansion. U keep bringing up Neely, Clark, etc - those players ARE SUPER RARE! I would love 5 of them per team but its not happening! and yes there are 2 many teams, i would cut 4-5 tms

  • Sorry I had a few beers last night watching Boston destroy Montreal. I may have overreacted with the insults-but here's my point. There is no longer room in hockey to carry a guy thats just a pure fighter and can't contribute. Thornton skates on the Bruins 4th line and plays 2-3 times as many minutes as a guy like Laraque-and CONTRIBUTES. Goons like Laraque dont have the talent to play in the new NHL. Yes, Clarks and Neelys are rare, but there are planty of Shawn Thorntons to choose from!

  • Its all cool BoSox, no biggie In fact you should be stoked, your Bruins smoked the habs lol -- were both big hockey fans and it sounds like we both want wants best. Im ok with cutting down stickwork, holding and opening up the 2 line pass, some rules are cool -- all i say is lets have a happy medium and not make every lil hit a tickytac penalty. Those Dman i mentioned were all solid and physical but with todays rules it would hurt em. I want speed and finesse and YES some physical aspect as well

  • The reason the game sux 2day is OVEREXPANSION in the mid 90's, team talent was diluted and the way 2 compete was the trapt. We never saw the trapt b4 expansion. in 93 or so. Wensik, Oreilly, etc were good players but its a different game 2day. 20 goal scores ARE NOT on the 4thline in 2009. Teams have 2-3 20 goal scores MAX and the 4th line is not scoring any goals weather its tuff guys or euros. I rather have a tough guy on the 4th line than a non descript euro who does nada any day of the week!

  • You must not be a hockey fan! "Teams have 2-3 20 goal scorers max"???

Boston had SEVEN 20 goal scorers, more than DOUBLE your MAX, and Chara had 19, and Lucic 17...so they were BALANCED. The league wasn't diluted you schmuck...more players from around the world entered the league which expanded the talent pool! Do you even follow the sport? I'm embarrassed to be talking to you now!

  • You miss the point. Do I enjoy it when Tony Twist was doing roids and smashing people's orbital bones? Sure! But Twist was a terrible hockey player and served no other purpose. You can police your teams without having an uber goon like Twist. Guys like Lucic, Iginla, Lacalvilier, Joe Thornton, Chris Pronger and many others would be able to curb cheap shots themselves. If no team had a goon, and they all just had solid players that could fight, those solid players would police their teams!

  • I like these announcers, who are these guys?

  • Fred Cusick and Derek Sanderson

  • Hartman was a pus

  • This would be all over the news with 30 game suspensions these days. I hate the new NHL.

  • This would be all over the news with 30 game suspensions these days. I hate the new NHL.

  • someone change the bruins broadcasters diapers, what a bunch of whinners, boston has done that MANY times with other teams, but thats ok when the bruins do it

  • Bruins goons went after other teams goons! I don't see any clips of Lyndon Byers and Jay Miller beating up guys who werent fellow goons. Galley was not a fighter, and neither is Randy Burridge, who is the one Hartman is chasing.

When a Bruin went after someone, they went after the other teams goon.

  • Calm down boys and girls, this was GOOD for ole time rough and tough hockey. These games were SOO MUCH FUN 2 WATCH NO MATTER WHO U LIKED! DAMN I MISS THIS HOCKEY.. Sometimes a non goon will get his ass beat and thats not a bad thing, just because your not a tuff guy doesnt mean u cant get your ass kicked if u do something... Thats what makes RIVALRIES, watching this made the next games SO MUCH FUN 2 watch.. This series was so much fun for HOCKEY fans, 4get your team 4 sec it was great old NHL gm

  • "Sometimes a non goon will get his ass beat and thats not a bad thing, just because your not a tuff guy doesnt mean u cant get your ass kicked if u do something... "

    I agree 100%

Just show me what Burridge or Galley did do deserve being attacked. If Burridge hit Lafontaine, he DESERVES to be attacked. If Galley went after Hawerchuck, then suck it up and mpve on! Guess what though? There was no cheap shot to retaliate against, and this is why hockey failed 20 years ago.

  • lmao Hartman going after Burridge and Galley! Wow, what a badass! That would be like Jay Miller going after Benoit Hogue. Oh wait, the Bruins fighters beat up other goons. Buffalos goons were pussies and couldnt beat the top Bruins fighters, so they went after the regular players! I remember now!

  • god i miss the old boston garden and hockey the way its supposed to be played.
