I love'em from the early times to the last ones, including screaming life and fopp, although I consider "down on the upside" an inferior album because it miss kim thayil's compositions and therefore the darkest, doomest, coldest, blacksabbath-like side of SG.

What this line means is open to anybody, to me this lines means "The protagonist beats a flowing,churning river to the point where it's nothing more than dead, still water."

If you see it that way, the line is pretty violent, in a positive sense.

The song is (to me) about rage, anger, breaking free from a deadlocked life. Not in a sense of being violent to other people but starting anew.

"Ride a pack of dogs" could be a reference to the Iditarod held around that area (metaphor for something, maybe?). The meaning would still be the same, though, regardless of the imagery.

Now I now the background of the lyrics, they make sense in that way (Though I prefer my interpretation of "take the river down to still water") ;-). I guess Chris refers to the things you say.
