Had an opportunity to have a master class before. And it took a while for everything to make sense, but afterward when I tried everything it was so much beautiful, and had so much context. He was talking about music as a language; I was blind then but now I can see that truth.

lang lang's advice here is terrible. Derek's original interpretation fits nicer in the overall structure of the piece, with a single overarching long phrase up until where lang lang stops him. The whole thing is then repeated. All these unnecessary myopic gestures only interfere with the larger presentation...

I hope you retain the care you take in playing, unlike his own careless approach. I will watch your development eagerly!

This is appalling. Trying to teach a kid how to play with certain emotion when 99% of kids don't have a deep understanding why you play soft or loud, in addition to rhythm and timing. It's ridiculous to try and teach this when kids haven't began to LIVE and mature, because in time, when they get older, they will FEEL and they will play the piece with the emotion and experience they need. THIS ONLY LIMITS THEIR FUTURE POTENTIAL TO INTERPRET THE PIECE!

@danster817 you do know that lang lang was the same way but look how he turned out.... lol it not just that kid cant use emotion while playing it is how much the will retrain or learn from the lesson the get on how to use emotion in their pieces.. yes it is true that most kids that are taught at a young age can play kinda flat but it just depends on their teacher

If I was Chinese I would never go with another Chinese for teaching my piano, Chinese culture has NOTHING to do with European Culture, Specially Romantic culture, the acculturation that communism imposed in China is the responsible of having this Lang Lang, playing anything but piano.

@sclyfes1212 Oh please go look up Jack Gibbons here on youtube and watch him play Alkan. Marc Andre Hamelin (also one of the greatest, most underrated pianists of our time) is a beast compared to this clown.

@jasonextreme They are just different and for the record..being able to play Alkan means you can play Alkan. Doesn't make you a pianist. Although I agree, they are both beasts, something is still missing. And yes, I prefer them both over Lang Lang.
