@marycigarettes Something about connecting with a song--really inhabiting it--that lifts you to a new place I can only call joy. And if some of that comes across to the listener, sheer bliss! mary, your comments are always a huge boost. Thanks eternal to you, one of the most unique voices on the planet.
@timboytx that's it my dear chap..going right inside the song...i've done that..i've spend months inhabiting one masterful song...we learn loads doing that......'life on mars' is the one i'm living inside right now'...it's a bugger of a thing, but huge fun getting it right...life is good ,isnt it?!
@marycigarettes Getting inside and under the text of a song really internalizes it. The flip side, though, for me, is that once you're "spent" on a song, the magic can drift away. Too often I want to toss the song aside like a chicken bone when the meat's all gone. I love "Life on Mars" and can't wait to hear your take on it.
@timboytx i agree...you can burn out on anything...and if you're smart, you WILL get bored and move on..but for me it's a learning curve in good songwriting..i don't go away and copy the chords or indulge in pastiche..it's just the way the masters use key changes...and how the phonetics of words become apparent..how some words are more musical to sing that others...phrasing..and how you rightly pointed out,the all important breath control....taste....and the essence of what youre saying.
Tim I loved that movie and took the time to write down all the lyrics. I didn't get as far as you- good job with it. I actually thought this song was written for that movie though!
@Woodshed1 Thanks for watching, Al! Glad you liked it. I found that I had to simplify my uke playing so I wouldn't upstage the vocal--since it's all about the words with this one. Plus, mentally the focus is 99% on what lyric is coming next. It was quite a challenge.
@Woodshed1 It would have been a nightmare if I'd been up against a deadline, but I was in my typical cycle of learning a song: I make an audio recording to play in the car and sing along to, and it eventually becomes obvious when I have the lyrics and melody solidly in my head. I'm usually learning three or four songs at a time, and they all come out of the oven at their own rate.
I've been wondering when we were going to be treated to your next musical offering. This is delightful, and I have no idea how you managed to remember all the nonsensical lyrics.
@SpaceHeadMonkey Thanks, SHMonkey. I taped a couple of other songs along with this one, so I hope to post them within the next few weeks. It's so hard to find a clean chunk of time when I won't be disturbed so I can get these recorded. I actually tape more than I post but if I'm not happy with them, they don't go public--or that sit on my computer for ages until I get over the rough edges. I have to remind myself that it's the rough edges that keeps them real and lets the humanity peek out.
beautiful, bravissimo!

@UkesterBrown Thanks, David. I hadn't heard of this song before MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS. It does not appear to be well known these days.
