Not really. There are subcultures in it that are a choice. For example, you can meet and socialize through clubs and bars, or in a church which is gay friendly. You can march in a parade as a demonstration of your pride, too. You can live with someone of your sex and shelter yourself from a life which is different than your sexual nature. You cant be talked into a lifestyle. Youre basically saying that someone could just walk up to me and tell me about robbing stores and that would make me do it. no. gays choose to be gay. im sick of heari8ng the bullcrap about them being born that way.

The speaker makes an excellent point about the need of their being a federal law defining marriage between same sex couples. Rights for US citizens ought to be equal in all parts of the country.

GREAT CHANNEL chopin65 ! I suppose it could be construed as being frivolous on the point of the marriage of anyone in love to decide to spend a life together. Apperently there are a lot of rights involved, of which I was unaware. When I was young I queried my dad regarding these breaks and his reply was, "Nope, not a thing," which probably informs my perception today. It's just like what ? WTF ? Let 'em get married - who cares ? I was raised Catholic which may imply that I am immune to religion.

civil unions, marriage? what's the difference? as long as both get the same tax status and same recognition as "married" couples.

Married couples receive 1,400+ state and
federal rights and a federally endorsed marriage is legally recognized worldwide. Civil unions get only about 300 state benefits and protections, they get no federal protection, and they are not recognized outside the state that grants it. On taxes, civil union couples can file only state returns jointly; federal returns must be filed as single. So it is NOTHING AT ALL close to the SAME.

However, civil unions as I've heard Senator Obama talk about them would come those benefits. He's playing a word game because extending the marriage right to same-sex couples it too easy for conservatives to demagogue *and* because civil unions are politically possible now. (Heck, even George W. Bush expressed support for them in 2004.) It's not the ideal, but Senator Obama has gone farther on this issue than any other Democratic presidential nominee.

Prof, remember the Democrat gay debate in LA? Obama's position was decidedly banal. He was not any more progressive than Hilary or the other Democratic front runners. On the other hand, Dennis Kucinich and Mike Gravel were explicitly in favour of gay marriage. No one went as far as them.
I find what Obama on civil unions becoming practically equivalent to marriage to be disingenuous. He doesn't have control over what states would legislate, so he can't promise it would. We need FEDERAL change.

I *do* remember it, and I disagree, Mavaddat. Senator Obama's rhetoric wasn't up there with Dennis Kucinich's, but he was way ahead of many of his fellow Democratic hopefuls, including Senator Clinton -- who, if you'll recall, during that forum couldn't even bring herself to say "don't ask, don't tell" was a mistake. ...

It was that very forum that pushed me in the direction of being an Obama supporter. Before that, I was torn between him and Clinton. I think he went significantly beyond what Hillary Clinton was willing to say. In fact, I found myself annoyed by Clinton's circumspection even in the presence of an audience that could not possibly have been more friendly.

What we need is federal recognition. And that is what I hear the Senator promising for civil unions.

ok fine the have the govt. sanction the "marriage" its all semantics really. But if you expect the govt. to force religious groups to sanction these kind of marriages then you are a fascist. have the federal govt. give the same benefits to civil unions as marriages. Thats why i said as long as they have the same tax status it should be ok.

Who said anything about "forcing" religious groups to do anything? Not me.
All I'm saying is that gay marriage should be universally recognized by all GOVERNMENTS. Religious groups can stay in the dark ages, for all I care. Most of them have until now anyway.
Do you believe that the legalization of abortion is equivalent to "forcing religious groups to sanction abortion"?
