  • I remember this ad. I came out close to when they had the little old lady, with her "where's the beef" thing. Now Wendy's has a cheap burger with the meat so thin, you can see daylight thru it. Where's the beef?

  • @soco13466 You came out ?

  • @trwent Dubya tee eff?

  • my history teacher showed this to us it was funny

  • This is what you get when you respond to one of those "Russian Ladies Want To Meet You" E-Mails.

  • Russian woman are hot but eventually they do become "vedy nice"

  • This commercial raised an official protest by the Russian government.

  • Jakareh75 said, "oh, the irony! russian women are quite beautiful, and usually slimmer than burger-eating americans."

True, but back then the USSR was such a closed society, and we could only form opinions based on the women they sent to the Olympics -- who were bulked up on steroids and totally looked like men!

If they had been an open society, allowing information and photographs to flow freely in and out, we would have had a much more favorable opinion of them. Now THAT's irony!!

  • oh, the irony! russian women are quite beautiful, and usually slimmer than burger-eating americans. that having been said, this is funny as shit!

  • It's hilarious!!! I'm Russian and loving it, gotta laugh at my stupid compatriots who take offense at this funny/silly commercial, stop whining, get a sense of humour offended "patriots".

  • Wow... This is really stupid... My parents lived in the USSR and they had great sense of fashion and design.. A lot of the clothes my parents wore is actually back in style right now... So shove it u pig headed asses! This is just the medias look on old Russia... Because u guys were so jealous!!

  • They're wearing the same thing X D LOL

  • always laugh my head off seeing this.....LOL!!!

  • this is funny

  • Remember it well ! Loved it !

  • One of my favorite commercials. Sadly an ad like this would never be aired these days since people are so sensitive and uptight.

  • @ClassicTVful Now you Americans are fat like this. One day your country will sink into the sea just the great Atlantis... only due to all those fat asses lol ;)

  • @ClassicTVful True! Political correctness has made this world quite boring...

  • Ohhhhhh propaganda. Hilarious.

  • I love this commercial I remember when was on TV Ohhh geezzz brings me good memories

  • verrrrry nice

  • LOL wow, agree with wpnwilo11, before PC bullshit made everyone a freakiing whiner. how far we have fallen.

  • The most beautiful girls on the planet are in Ukraine, Latvia, Estonia, and Russia. Men from around the world flock to the region for the girls and the fun. The above females look like the typical fat American high school students I have seen.

  • @Revolution4Beauty There are an equal number of beautiful girls everywhere. But thats not the point. There are many lovely Russian women of course. But trust me, if there was a fashion show held in the Soviet Union an ugly, fat, single eyebrow daughter of a Communist Party member would have been the model. Regular people just kept their heads down to survive, and no one had anything that wasn't grey, plain and ugly. It really was awful, and Russian people hated it. Its much better now.

  • Just the notion that the stereotypes in this ad, well, that most young people would have no idea where the stereotypes come from and that stereotypes constantly change, is encouraging. The way media approaches diverse people has not changed, however.

  • i love this one ,i remember oit well

  • I miss the cold war

  • Ah, the good old days, when we had the Soviet Union to kick around! LOL!!!

  • one of the funniest commercials done - better than the overrated Heres the Beef ad - I remember them well.

  • the soviet union was pissed

  • The "model" in this ad was my high school drama teacher when this came out. I loved seeing her in this ad! It was the first time anyone I knew personally was on TV professionally. :)

  • @JnanaNari Wait! Seriously?

  • @JnanaNari Was she paid well?

  • @JnanaNari

    She was excellent!

  • @JnanaNari That's awesome! I remember this ad as a kid. "Very nice!"

  • My mom told me about this commercial when I was younger I just now got around to look it up. Ah, funny!

  • better not show this to the Libs, might give them ideas for what else to do to us.

  • Brilliant!!!!

  • Classic!!! One of the funniest Wendy's commercials! And this was waaaaay before the "Where's the beef" commercials aired!

  • @bigg3469117 1988 was "way before the Where's the Beef commercials aired"? WRONG! Those aired in 1980!

  • This is similar to Bill Maher's Burka Fashion Show!

  • People, welcome to nuclearnight's Das Amerika!

    LMAO!

  • Timeless classic

  • I remember this video! =D

  • This was better than Wheres the beef!

  • Too bad the old U.S.S.R. isn't around, they helped to keep that region of the World stable. Now it's a quagmire over there for our troops...

  • @loveunderlaw

you got that right. given what we now know about afghanistan and the lovely muslims who live there, we should have given aid to the Red Army, not the mujahideen.

  • @Jakareh75 IMO even back then we had traitors in office to both nations. When the U.S.S.R., & USA were both powerful nations, the World was a MUCH safer place to live, than it is these days!

  • Yeah I would quote some of the lines from this commercial to people but nobody knew what I talking about. "next" swimwear, next day wear , very nice . Guess I am old too

  • I remember this. Jesus, I'm old.

  • This commercial probably helped that country get taken over by plutocrats, but it is still funny. Fashion shows anywhere are kind of bizarre.

  • @awackocrank And whenever you hear some bozo trot out a big word like "plutocrat" in response to a silly 30-year old commercial, you can tell they don't know their ass from their face about economics.

  • @Animalco Green eggs and ham for you. Nyet Wendy's!

  • Is next.... SVEEEMvearrrr....!

  • Has to be one of my all time favorite commercials.

@ the height of the cold war, it was nyt, nyt to the Soviets……..lol

  • What a great commercial! I really love Wendy's and burgers from many different places. Much better than vodka, cold potatoes, and snow- the typical socialist loser diet.

  • the soviet wendys!? cool comrade! reeeeaaaallllll cooool!

  • that fashion show announcer looks somewhat like newman on seinfeld!!

  • in soviet russia burger eat you

  • The emcee of the fashion shownis a man dressed as a woman. He was a sitcom actor. Anyone remember who it is?

  • Not be angry, was another era,and this was how saw the soviet men and women, here in western world.

Soviet Union and eastern communist countries were very closed.

    Now,obviously is different.

Russian women are among the most beautiful in the world, and many wealthy russian men dress in Saville Row or Napoli by the best tailors.

Now the cold war is over and we are all friends,

  • Yeah, back in those times you still could make fun of Soviet women who had lived through revolution, civil war, collectivization, state terror, war and famine and had such figures due to their messed up metabolism. Those were the good old days.

Also, many Americans now look like this exactly because of these hamburgers. Apparently, most people here are too schizo to see the irony in that.

  • @HelenaXVI: We've had all that, as well. Belittling that fact would make someone a "racist". (I have you to thank for the use of that term in this capacity. What freedom!)

  • What year did this come out?

No wonder McDonalds made it into Russia first

  • Sad to say, but to this day, I've been known to yell "Very nice!" when someone asks how they look. And every year I go shopping for "Svimvear!"

  • This is why communism failed.

  • I remember this commercial .It was only on for less than a month but was hilarious. They pulled it because of political correctness. That's a shame because you have to have a sense of humor in life. I'd like to believe the Russians had a chuckle from this.We all know that the Russian ladies are not all babushka owners.

  • greates commercial ever!

  • Great classic comercial!!

  • I remember when a whole bunch of tight-ass Soviet government officials got their dander up about this Wendy's commercial and the movie "Red Dawn".

  • 24 people are godless communists.

  • @reaganite They're Obama voters. They are dying for America to be a gulag. idiots.

  • That's very racist.

  • @DrunkenDriverStudios : Now have you ever seen "Russian" listed under a "what race do you belong to?" question? Oh, sorry. That's not a question we've been allowed to ask for decades. (Excuse me while I cover up. My age is showing.) Technically, this is stereotyping of a culture, based on ignorance. If it was illegal to stereotype, we'd all be in prison!

  • @wpnwilo1 Don't flatter yourself, it's your stupidity showing, not your age. Who says that in order to call something racist, there had to be a race involved? Races don't exist, honey. Racism is exactly that, making another group look like they're not normal people like you. Whether the group has a different skin color, religion or political system doesn't matter. The Poles are not a different race from the Germans, still the Nazis' treatment of them cannot be described other than racist.

  • HOWEVER, the def. has expanded over the last 20 years, to accomodate the lack of linguistical skill (ie. a commonplace inaccuracy has changed the meaning) and for that I thank you for your bringing the change to my attention. Your delivery, however, leaves a lot to be desired and may have even attracted a few sympathizers, if you had been a little less ... you???

  • Respond to this video... -IST: one that performs or adopts a specific belief or action. RACE: a group of humans that share genetically-acquired physical traits. Pardon me for thinking as a scientist, as that is what I am.

  • @wpnwilo1 If you were a scientist, you would know that races don't exist. Racism is about depicting other groups of people as fundamentally different and less human than your own group. Scientific racism is just an attempt to rationalize this mentality.

When people call Muslims vermin that poisons the world, so according to you it's not racist because the Muslims are not a race? Or the Nazi treatment of Slavic people, it wasn't racist because the Slavs are Caucasian just like the Germans?

  • @HelenaXVI We've always classified things, as humans. It's not pretty, not always nice, but it is how we study, understand and develop sympathies/hatred/respect for all things around us. Without systems of genetic classifications, archeologists, anthropologists, doctors, research scientists, etc. would be at a loss. Like it or not, your genetics classify you and help others help, understand, etc. you. It is cultural/religious bias that causes the problems.

  • @wpnwilo1 The Russians and Ukrainians are two closely related nations, still the things they can sometimes say about each other, are, well... racist. And this video is racist too because it depicts another nation as inferior and laughable. Just look at them being stupid and us knowing how to enjoy life.

Never mind the Soviet Union kicking the Nazis' ass back in WW2, while the Americans were building sand castles on French beaches.

  • I remember this commercial and that it scary. How not cool is that? Thanks for a chuckle.

    Mare

  • I think they ought to remake this ad, only this time, make it a Chinese fashion show!

  • @MarauderOSU Why? China is doing better financially then we are? They hold our debt, and they are better consumers. They are now far more of a democracy and far more of a capitalist nation then the US. If anything it would be funny to do it with an Arab country.

  • 24 people don't like fresh.

  • It's a joke. Everyone chill out.

But if you're still mad you're beloved stalin legacy is being mocked, remember Youtube is an American company, the computer you're typing with was probably made by an American company, and America survived the Cold War. So go eat a Wendy's, buy an evening wear dress and be VERY NICE.

  • "Very nice!"

  • Prior to the emergence of all of those hot Russian tennis chicks in the last few years, this is what I always imagined all Russian women looked like. Boy, am I glad I was wrong!!

  • Imagine the same kind of commercial in Soviet Union mocking the US?

Nah, can't do that, US a mockery to itself with all the obese women.

  • @sergeontheloose Nyet! It wasn't so until US began to imitate the socialist bloc a few years ago. In the 70s and 80s all Americans were in better shape. Russians were obese monsters, who banged their shoes on desks at UN and threatened to start WW3. America must return to the days of confidence, as they had under Reagan. Get on the treadmill and lose weight. Be proud of USA freedoms.

  • @mikedonn71

Don't tell me fairy tales, and start eating real food instead of "Mcdonalds" type of crap.

Nothing beats a good bowl of borsch.

The problem of obesity in US started with introduction of all those "fast food" chains.

  • @sergeontheloose

The problem of obesity in US started with introduction of all those "fast food" chains.

No, it started with our prosperity and the abundance of "good" food (i.e., not infected and rotting). Fatness is a healthy sign if you ask me. We don't have all those skinny people like 3rd-worlders have.

  • @theOlLineRebel

haha, you are delisional at best or stupid at worst.

The good actually rots fast, that is a chemical reaction of a good food. The bad food like mcdonalds crap can stay the same for up to 180 days without decaying- what kind of food is that?

Fatness is not a healthy sign - it is a sign of incoming health problems, big health problems. There are more people dying from obesity-related causes in US than from malnutrition in some countries.

  • @sergeontheloose

More people dying? Probably because the US is HUGE compared to most of those countries. Try % rather than simple numbers. I'd still rather be surrounded by well-fed people than those who can't get ANY food. That's a bad country that can't/won't feed its people.

You're full of it saying McDonald's can last for 180 days. That's total nonsense. And who cares, anyway, if a food can stay good a long time? That'd be another triumph of innovation typical of this country.

  • Russian

  • In Soviet Russian, hamburger eats you!

  • American propaganda crap!!!! I'm sure so many people bought into this crap!

  • @ArtemKonstantinovich it was a joke. people in the west saw anything soviet as bland and plain. i saw a diplomat complaining about it and the kgb guys behind him snickering. even THEY it was funny and took it as the joke it was.

  • obama's America soon to be in town near you.

  • @Auggie56 no

  • One of the best commerials ever. I remember when I would wear bathing suits, I would say "It's svimwear,."

  • @RetroJenny "Vetty Nice"-OMG, It's nice to know I wasn't alone-I did the same thing!

Highland Appliance Stores had some good commercials back in the day too.

  • ..funny commercial BUT it's ironic that American women look more like that now whereas Russian women are slender and sexy.

  • Model looks like obama's wife minus the genetic suntan. And that announcer, its either janet Naziputana or Elena Gaygan.

  • @OBAMASTINKSLIKEANAPE

What are you talking about? Michelle Obama is in great shape. Naziputtana is funny, though.

  • @Jerkiarrea75 Moochelle Obonga, has an ass the size of barn. Take a look at the pictures of her ass that are available on the net and drop the obonga koolaid garbage.

  • @Jakareh75 Sexy as that woman in the above "fashions."

  • Is this Project Runway season 8 or a fast food commercial?

  • haha that announcer sounds like Borat :D

  • My favorite line has always been, "Is next, Svimvear!" Hilarious!

  • Makes me nostalgic for the cold war.

  • Geez - I thought this was a Pepsi ad!

I loved this, but we hardly ever saw it. It stuck with me that well. Hilarious - flashlight!

  • I have always remembered this comercial, and have even quoted from time to time over the years. "Iz Svimwear!" Very funny, and more importantly -- memorable.

  • Dave's Sizzling Sounds of Summer contest by Wendy's was responsible for some great tunes but what ever happened to them?

  • Funny this is how American women look now...fat, nasty, and obese from too much reality TV...

  • Ahh....a time before political correctness made the world less funny.

  • @wpnwilo1 Exactly. A society or a people that's afraid to mock their opponents has already lost. We can't make fun of anyone who hates America or wants our civilization destroyed without being called "bigots" or "misunderstanders".

  • @emanuelshapera Amen.

  • Comment removed

  • @wpnwilo1 Political correctness didn't kill this kind of humor. What people seem to want to call "political correctness" is nothing more than not being an ass-hat and saying patently offensive things. Sadly people don't seem to know the difference, so then maybe it's best they don't say anything at all.

  • @cubdukat Agreed. There are plenty of cases where people are simply being over sensitive about an issue, and then there are times when a statement, commercial, or joke was in blatantly bad taste. Part of what caused the hyper-sensitivity and censorship of this age was people's inability to discern between the two. It's a shame :/

  • @cubdukat Now you would get sued or fired for saying things that are simply true. This is what the Soviet Union sort of was like. Of course things have changed now. But can you imagine making a suntan lotion commercial with muslim women in their shapeless black clothing and headwraps? IUt would be funny, but then of course the muslim population would be wringing their hands about how everyone hates them.

  • @cubdukat Sometimes, and sometimes its nothing more than an effort to control the argument and shut down opposition.

  • Is next.....

  • I found this and showed it to my kids. They loved it. Very Funny. Couldn't do a commercial like that these days in this politically correct world.

  • Comment removed

  • This ad works... i want Wendy's now.

  • Why do they have subtitles for the guy speaking in English?

    so confused

  • @Helicon0001 I did wonder that.

  • @yanachkakroy

    Not Russians; Commies.

  • Oh I remember this commercial very well! I still blurt out "very nice!" on a regular basis. Great stuff ... sometimes I even miss the cold war. ALMOST ... but not.

  • REAGAN FUCK YEEEEEAAAAAAAAR!

  • One of the funnier ads of the 1980's.

I remember the commercial vividly but not that it was for Wendys.

  • Good stuff !

Takes me back to a good time when content was not so self-consciously 'green', and designed and produced by Birkenstock wearing, pasty face, concave chested, 'nanny-state twit' food police.

  • @epolenep1 - For that I'm reporting you to the nanny state! *pushes rim of glasses up off of nasal bridge in anger*

  • One commenter mentioned that this was from the 70s, but it was first aired sometime in the mid 80s. I remember it very clearly. Besides, the temper of the times int the 70s wouldn't have allowed anything to mock the USSR, socialism, or communism. In the 80s, Ronald Reagan was President, and he wasn't afraid to call the Soviet system for what it was. Can't say for sure if there's any connection between the 2, but I wouldn't be surprised.

  • @eyesonthesky Thank you and you are absolutely correct

  • The Soviet Union. Ahhhh......how I miss the good old days!!!

Also, it funny to remember when they used to make (and air!) one-minute spots!!

  • I remembered this from years ago, what a treat to see it again, very funny stuff!! :)

  • I remember this...funny.

  • Ohhhhh burn~! THIS is what destroyed communisim, commies ain't got no smack talk game~!

  • my sister in law (from St. Petersburg) fell down laughing when I showed her this.

  • very nice

  • This has to be one of the funniest commercials ever. One commenter identified it as being from the 80s, but I think, rather, that it was aired in the 1970s, when I was in high school.

Also, note the portrait of Lenin on the wall. Priceless.

  • This comercial came up in conversation during a family dinner, and we have been trying to find it for several weeks. thank you for posting it. It brings up many memories. It has always been one of my favorites

  • Y'know, I think this commercial would fly today.

  • nice eveningwear flashlight

  • Yeah, there was a saying that went something like this.......

Unlike America where only a few can buy toasters, all Russians have toasters!

They may not work, but everybody has one!

  • One of the most creative and BEST commericals of the 1980's. Wendys had one hell of an ad campaign back then

  • The commercial that brought down the Berlin Wall!

  • This commercial ran incessantly on MTV 1985. I have it on tape during their airing of Duran Duran's "Sing Blue Silver".

  • I think these gems were created by Gary Sadlemeyer (?) He did some great stuff.

  • I remember this one. Glad to see it pop up on here.

  • I love Naisbitt.

  • In Soviet Russia, dress wear you!

  • Why can't we know who the people were who came up with these hilarious commercials. Everything about this one seems perfect. I owe someone or a team my thanks for such cleverness. John Poole

  • This has got to be one of the funniest and cleverest television adverts of all time.

BTW, this ad was from the 1970s, not the 80s. I remember it from when I was in high school. It was clever then, and it's no less clever now. Quite hilarious for those of us old enough to have a vivid memory of the Cold War.

  • @13beacon BTW, this ad was from the 1980s, NOT the 70s. I, too, remember the Cold War and remember seeing this commercial.

  • @rjcb3 I confirm it was the 80's because I was born in the early 80's and remember watching this commercial over and over.

  • looooool

  • Best commercial of all time.

  • Is next.... HEALTH CARE.

  • LOL @ JTTCOLO!!! So very true.

  • IS NEXT!!!!!

  • my father was one of the musicians

  • as a hungarian, was he happy to be giving the soviets the slap in the face they deserved?

  • @pushups2345

    no comment lol

  • Greatest commercial EVER. period.

Freaking EVER. And Pygar, the post USSR sequel is exactly the same.

  • When I see people walking around (I live in the Midwest) I think of this commercial. This is how a lot of people, who are often obese, dress now - sweatsuits, smocks, culottes, baggy capris. The sad thing is that much of our country has become what we used to laugh at.
