  • once the steel wool is ignited, do you still need the electricity to keep it lit long enough to light the tinder?

  • IF you have a flash light and steel wool why just not use a lighter or some matches? I'm sure if you remember to carry less useful stuff you ill care more useful stuff.

  • stick to bow/hand drills and practice them every other day purely for fitness and skill retention. Folks overlook the fitness for hand drills n bow drills etc but when you aint done them in a bit you sure feel it in your arms and back. Also your hands get soft and sore.

I'll stick with bow/hand drills, matches and my mag block n striker thanx. Somethings wrong if you have to do that with a torch. Keep the batts full and the torch in good nick for signalling.

oh, and as for the wire wool. Thats what the SAS carry in their first aid kits instead of cotton wool to dab cuts etc and for removing their make up. ;)

Don't leave home without it guys. :)

  • right now, go put a strike anywhere match inside all of your flashlights.... it'll save you a lot of time and you wont have to remember to pack steel wool lol

  • you can just take a 9 volt and rub it on the wool

  • Yep, that works excellently.

  • Good Thing to know if you get lost camping... But you must remember to pack steel wool! LOL...
