The concert was good but... come on. FF8 and FF9 were NEVER played this time. I think it would have been better if they used more songs from ALL the FF games in the FF medley... instead of focusing on a few famous tracks and make them drag too long. I'm tired of hearing the same tracks getting played and other beautiful tracks being forever ignored.
And I hope Xeno will have a tribute one day (the recent orchestra album was encouraging... but it left me wanting for more, for something bigger).
@RadicalDreamer17 I'm sorry about FF8 and FF9, but this concert gave so many other games and songs the proper attention that they've never received before. FF8 and FF9 have been given as much attention as others in concerts like Distant Worlds, 20020220, and the tour de Japon. FF8 even has it's own orchestral album. And since when were the tracks that they played here dragging to long? They didn't even play the entire pieces in this specific video.
The whole concert was awesome. Although I think more people at the afternoon performance (which I was in) got the Rony Barak cue after the One Winged Angel tease than here in the evening. I was really laughing when they cut the percussionist off. :D
Still, the only thing I was desperately missing from that encore was "Those Who Fight Further", the boss battle theme. I was excited throughout the whole arrangement when Arnie Roth announced the battle-medley. But it never came...
This was a little messy. Though the intention of working in all those battle themes was a great idea, I think it was condensed a little too much and came out in a bit of a mess. But hearing Birth of a God was great. They should have left OWA out all together except for the end and just finished on one big SEPHIROTH!!
I agree it feels a bit slapped together, especially considering that the first half of it is lifted directly from FF7 piano collections/symphonic fantasies. Still, I always get excited for any new orchestrated FF7 themes, especially considering that FF7 never got a full orchestral album the way FF8 did. However, I think this piece will sound ten times more amazing when they remaster the recording and release it on CD.
How nice of you describing the audience like this. *please insert sarcasm in here*
D:
And hereby little information shall be given even to you: it's some sort of inside joke. Last year at a previous event similiar to this a percussion solo was chosen as a bridge to lead in to 'One Winged Angel'. But somehow it got a little bit out of hand. So it lastet longer than expected. The audience was somehow teased in a nice way one could say.
If you read my post all the way through you would know that I am aware of this running gag (see last sentence: "three times in a row"). I'm sorry, but any audience that rudely appoints itself to make noise over the performers deserves condescension; it's a breach of etiquette and shows disregard for the musicians.
Even European audiences still interrupt the performance with the predictability of Pavlov's drooling dogs every time One-Winged Angel tiredly checks in for duty. What they should be excited about is all the new material being covered in this piece, though I'm glad they aren't because then they'd cheer over that too. Props to the arrangers for trolling the philistine OWA fanboys three times in a row now.
@lentilsonlent I was shouting curses to OWA during the first transition, complaining about it being played in every fucking concert and not J-E-N-O-V-A, and suddenly it started. It's the first time i felt pleasure by getting trolled. Now an orchestrated The Landing is the only thing left i need.
I was there and it was amazing! Unfortunately I couldn't get an autograph because I took too long to find the Philamornie, and then the waiting line was already too long. Still waited but didn't work. The final encore was epic, and i loved the Lost Odissey part, although i never played the game! Next year I'll be there again on the Symphonic Fantasies.
was at the concert takin place 5 hours earlier, the audience's reaction when they started playing One Winged Angel and suddenly switched over to JENOVA was priceless. Thanks for uploading!
It was a great night, at cologne. I'm not the biggest FF-Fan (wrong consoles) but i know them well and it was a superb time there. I hope a Zelda-Concert later this year will be there too.
I was there as well! It was thoroughly amazing, seeing Mr. Uematsu in real life was just crazy, he's such an awesome fella and the applause was always thundering and overwhelmingly great, simply amazing. My only complaints about the concert are, some really great themes were merely teasers, like Gilgameshs battle theme, way to short, same with One winged Angel, also, the lightshow was blinding me at times, lol, and I found the choir solo a bit weak, still great, but not as punchy, ethereal tho<3
Lol, we got trolled outta OWA once again eh? At least the full thing xD. I love the medley, it flows so perfectly with all the themes scattered everywhere :D
@FaberBollonius You´ve forgotten ´´Those Chosen by the Planet´´ (3:39-4:10) ! I recognized this immediately when they played it,and now it has lyrics,SUPER AWESOME! I want to have them : (
thx, i absolutely forgot about that track as the tune of "those chosen by the planet" (3:39-3:58) is also part of the original "birth of god" (which lasts from 3:13-4:10) :D
I also forgot that "J-E-N-O-V-A" is already sneaking into "those who fight" from 1:31-1:40 ;)
Woah, this is uploaded already?! you guys are fast.
I was there. It was so freaking great. I hope they will play next year too. Too bad i didn't manage to get an autograph from Uematsu because of the long line, but atleast i have seen him in real life. That was such a satisfying feeling. They played up to 2 encores. Now thats being loyal to your fans!
@mirrorpiece same problem here, i´ve waited after the concert at the entrance for musicians and one of the people went inside and could actually grab a autogram. I was too scared to do the same, also my train was comming :/
I hope the person I gave my stuff for Uematsu delivered it.
And in general: J-E-N-O-V-A and Birth of a God were brilliant, but I really would've prefered something like FFVIII's Liberi Fatali or FFIX's Dark Messenger for a change. FFVII is a great game and has a beautiful soundtrack, but there are other magnificent pieces waiting to be performed. And Liberi Fatali would make a brilliant last piece.
@VenomousCherub I see your point. Well there is always hope for next year. And i totally agree with you. Hearing jenova and birth of a god in orchestrated bliss was legendary.
Will symphonic fantasies focus on the same games as 2 years ago? and will Nobuo and all the other composers be there as well? This was my very first orchestra concert and i just cant wait till next year^^
It appears to me that it will be the same performance as two years ago. The flyer I have says something about 'repeating' it due to so many people requesting. Not sure what will happen with the Encore piece, though.
As for guests? No idea. The composers maybe. Valtonen, Barrack and Nuss were at Symphonic Legends. I would love to meet Shimomura, but I don't think the chances to see Shimomura and Uematsu (again) are very high.
@mirrorpiece MWHAHAHA i waited like 15minutes to be picked up from the concert hall and there.. i saw him.. uematsu san smoking and no one around him asking for an autograph ;D
@lentilsonlent YES my thoughts exactly. Why did that arrangment suck so much? I think arnie arranged it, maybe he should stick to conducting. THis had much more punch, and it was sweet they spliced some of battle theme into it too
It sucked because rather than using the orchestra to enrich the harmonic complexity of original, they cut out parts from the original (i.e. the violin part, present in this version). Also, Arnie Roth pretty much just writes big band brassy jazz music.

They should do Castlevania or Suikoden and probably the Xenogears/saga already
