You must be stupid to pay that much for a mini - you could have bought a decent car for that. Never buy a car with known problems. Do some research FIRST and save your money.
@urbex2007 Oh and, like eamesification said, some people have more important things to do than learn English. Like learn a different language -- or learn 4 different languages.
Tipical failure from thp psa bmw engines, all thp do the same, crap engine, like someone saids here, there is a new tensioner and crankcase pulley and some other things that seems to fix it...
My R56 Cooper S sounded the same way after a cold start. 18000 km on it.
Brought it in for service, they replaced the timing chain and chain tensioners. Noise was gone for 1500km, then it came back.
I didn’t feel like bringing it in again so I checked the oil level and topped it off by pouring in 0,5L of oil. Noise was gone.
Now whenever I get this knocking noise every couple thousand kms, I just pour in bit more oil. BTW, the knocking appears long before the oil warning lamp turns on.
@eamesification You didn't "brought" it in for a service - you "took" it in for a service. Learn the difference between tenses. You took the car to a garage, you did not brought it to the garage. I do hope you can see the difference. Don't say it as if you are in the garage, tell us what you did in past tense. I really hate people who can not speak English correctly. It's so lazy and shows a lack of intelligence, which might explain the choice of car. You wasted your money buying a MINI.
@urbex2007 Sorry, English isn’t my native language. But hey, I’m sure you are fluent in four different languages, so feel free to pick a different one and I shall translate my comment so that you too can understand what I was trying to convey.
@urbex2007 wow, that was an amazingly stupid comment about the tenses. "brought" and "took" are both simple past tense of different verbs -- both words work in that case (try looking it up!). "I brought it in for service" is perfectly valid English. Note that when you say "did not" the verb is "do", thus you need to use the infinitive form of the second verb, e.g. "You did not take it in", which is why your examples of "You did not brought it in" didn't sound right -- you were doing it wrong.
@urbex2007 Even though you're technically correct about the use of "brought", do you really feel better about yourself now that you've pointed out a minor flaw in the grammar of a non-native English speaker? This is a car video. There's no need to be so hostile. All MINI's aren't bad cars and even if they were, why are you bothered that someone else has spent THEIR money on one?
Sounds like the fuel injectors to me. To be honest, it sounds pretty normal for the newer prince engine. The death rattle would be a lot worse than that

this is def a timing chain issue. there is more than just replacing the chain tensioner. the chain needs to be measured for chain depth. there is a special tool to measure this. there are 2 updated chain tensioners, the one that ends with part number 895 is only if u install a new chain with guides and all the little harware that goes with it. if u are only replacing the tensioner make sure to use the tensioner that ends in 551. USUALLY TIMING MAY BE OFF!!!!! do not assume its only a tensioner.
This is what happens when a company just throws something together on a computer and runs with it and ASSUMES they have overlooked nothing. They DID NOT do their homework. SHAME on them.
Dear 2009CooperS, Hope you don't have the Death Rattle. But we had so many problems with the car, that we sold it in September 2010. It was a pile of crap, maybe the worst car I've ever owned?!!!!
I've sold the car now, had enough of it as I've had so many major problems with the car in less than three years. If you are thinking about buying an R56 Cooper S, do yourself a massive favour and don't buy one. The build quality is crap, it has a crap engine, the paint quality is crap, Mini Warranty is crap and so is Mini Service. In my opinion, the R56 Cooper S is a cheaply produced, badly put together car. DON"T BUY ONE!!!
@Paulandtara1999 From all the research I did online, this looks like its an issue just with some Cooper S. I just got a 2004 Mini Cooper (non S) and looks and drives great. BTW, I know you sold your car but did BMW fix it? I've seen someone on an other post said BMW fixed the issue. Something about not being put in right from default factory. Best regards.
Why the question mark? It's still early days after BMW fitted the latest timing chain tensioner hydraulic piston. So far the death rattle has not returned and the chain does not rattle now. However, time will be the judge to see if BMW have actually got it right this time as previous redesigned ttt's have failed after a varied amount of time.
change oil and filter, add STPoil treat to see if it pushes the tensioner out, there for tighting the timing chain, drive for 3 miles let cool then re run
you know if you take it to the dealer they are going to say its normal. these engines are loud, but from the sounds of it i think its the timing chain, ive had mine replaced twice, and still no hope, today only one day after i got my car back from the dealer while taking a corner i lost power and hit the curb i mean this car is to much. its a great car but only if you plan on driving it as a fun car on the weekend and sunny days, not a daily driver.
Hi. I got a new Peugeot 308 GT. Mine does the exact same. It is worse when cold or when I have Jet washed it and left it to stand, It is in with the Peugeot dealer now but just wondered what I can do if they say its noisy. My last Peugeot was a diesel and i think this one is noisier
@Paulandtara1999 its nothing serious, i've worked with my dad as a mechanic for years, that rattling noise can be fixed, i wish i could get my hands on that thing
My neighbor's 335i is 1 year old and has been back to BMW seven times I think. And they weren't for just one or two things either. Could be a lemon, but I've heard other Beamer's are having a lot of problems as well from all over the place.
"Death Rattle." A known affliction, along w/all the other afflictions these POS cars have. They're garbage. They're boutique cars, marketed to people who had too much money handed to them. For all the rest who buy one. BMW/Mini couldn't care less. I'll never buy one. I always thought I'd buy a BMW next time. Never, after learning about Minis. I'm sorry for your loss. Read the forums to see what you have to look forward to (in short order) if you keep this POS. Good Luck.
I've been back three times to complain about the timing chain rattle, but BMW say that the poor build quality of the car is normal.
If you're thinking about buying an R56 Cooper S, my advice is don't waste your money. Read the JD Power survey if you don't believe me.
My R56 S IS the worst car I've ever owned. I'm getting rid of the pile of crap as soon as the warranty expires. And will never buy another Mini or BMW car due to the way that I have been treated by BMW.

This is THE solution for ALL the THP PSA-BMW engines.
Record this video, bring it to your official Mini-Peugeot-Citroen dealer and tell them to fix it THIS way. Is the internal Peugeot video for dealers.

That's an all known problem with the first R56 Cooper S Models.
It's the chain adjuster.
BMW should know that and fix it.
They just have to exchange it for the currend version... My 2009 Cooper S hasn't got that problem at all...

Where exactly is the chain here?
