  • i assume wetton was mostly improvising the lyrics before the recording of the red version

  • @lamecasuelas2 Red is an excellent album

  • Needs the sax.

  • Hay algo que siquiera se acerque a esto??? Fripp...maestro....Bill B. Inigualabel

  • Incredible musical moment, captured on tape. A copy of this performance should be vaulted, so future generations can see what we (well, I've been a big fan and KC for since before this song came out...) achieved. Lovely.

  • i thought i was imagining the scenery at 7:45

  • Impresionante, cuantos elementos en escena, magnifica la conceptualizacion de desarrollar música de este nivel, indudablemente de pocos como lo hace el rey carmesí.

  • I melt at this point 10:34

  • @1984therocker Hahaha! It's a superb song, isn't it? A very close second to my personal favourite 'The Devil's Triangle'. Extremely eerie & astral. I also like 'Epitaph' and 'Lark's Tongues In Aspic (Part 1)" but that's all merely my personal choice. King Crimson are overall one of my favourite bands.

  • Wow! A fretless violin!

  • Breathtaking. A timeless masterpiece of music. Bill at drums is out of this world.

  • King Crimson the band heavier Progressive Rock !!!

  • best song ever

  • melankolia

  • In most cases, those who disliked the video are dissed by those who liked it, but in this case, I express pity for him/her. How alone they must feel to be foolish/close-minded/crazy enough to dislike such artistry. It could keep me up at night...

  • mad drummin skillz

  • awesome piece of music...as is the whole album Red.

  • I love that song - why did he mess up lyrics ?!

  • Έκανα κακά πάνω μου.

  • @semanray Actually this is probably my favourite King Crimson song, it is beautiful & haunting. I also love The Devil's Triangle, Lark's Tongues in Aspic (Part 1) and Epitaph.

  • @vanessamcqueen11 my favorite songs is fracture, but Red is my all time favorite album

  • The Cars/Since You're Gone (admittedly), Moby/We Are All Made Of Stars...that's a coupla decades of influence right there.....

  • seriously, why was Bill sooooo less interesting with Yes? Fripp must have just lit a fire under him, holy s...t

  • talk about tension-and-release! thanks for uploading the entire song; was only aware of the 2pt version which was terribly out of sync. awesome.

  • Thanx 4 uploading this piece of Beauty !

  • it's a bit short and monotonous : )

but stop living in the past people. nostalgia is death

  • You said "Justin Biber" o "Shakira" when i ask you "Dou You Like Some Music?".

If this examples are music... What is THIS GREATEST CELESTIAL SOUND?,

    Stop the CHANTADA.

  • anybody know the mellotron chords for the 3 verses and the ending? i have the intro figured out already.

great fucking song by a great fucking band. KC \m/

  • Incredible band! One of my first albums...USA was my first on vinyl, I have been absolutely freaked out by them ever since.

    Thanks for posting.

  • Just wow! Between Fripp, Wetton and Brufords play I am captivated. I am new to KC and find them fantastic.

  • King Crimson and van der graaf generator...the 2 most amazing prog band ever... of the 70's...of course...King Crimson after the 70's were boring and VDGG just the shadow of themselves.....

  • there music is timeless

at 1st i was in love with the wetton line up

and i was so ignorant to belew n levin that i though that the rest of the line-ups where blah

givin some time they took over my creative mind

now one of my favorite albums is the power to believe

though iknow levin aint on that one

  • Thanks a lot broodthefire for posting this. It's hard to pick my favourite King Crimson/Robert Fripp album, but "Red" would probably be it.

  • perfection in music

  • Does anybody have any idea what the meter is in the breakdown in the middle with the wicked bass line. My drummer and I used to listen to this over and over again for hours trying to figure it out. We never got it, but it was still time well spent.

  • Fripp rocked the beard and shoulda kept it. I don't need to comment on the music since its greatness speaks for itself.

  • We can't see things like this on TV anymore.

  • @tonibcnn I was born in the 90's so I never saw stuff like this, but thank god I have the internet.

  • I simply can not find words to expres feelings, while listening Crimsons music. Now and 30 years ago it was the same.thank God for them!

  • Прекрасно!

  • More than amazing!

  • i think there's a mike inside bruford's snare

  • Pardon my poor grammar below, I'm typing this on a mobile phone. Can anybody please recommend me some other good quality live Crimson videos on this website? There's just so much stuff to trawl through on here. Cheers. V

  • @broodthefire You can get new & improved mellotrons. They put them back in production about a decade or so ago. They're extremely expensive & I'd hate to think how much shipping it would cost to ship it here (Aust). Mine cost $4k in the '90s. It's came with a second tape rack of 3 sounds. The tape rack currently in it has this classic Crimson string sound, classic Strawberry Fields Forever flute sound & choral voices.

  • This is Fukn SIIICK!!

  • This band are incredible. I love the insane build up climatic ending. This is my second favourite King Crimson song. They are one of the main reasons I bought a Mellotron 400.

  • @vanessamcqueen11 I totally agree! I bet mellotrons are not in production anymore. How much did you get for yours?

  • @vanessamcqueen11 what´s your favorite song from them? when I listen to this song, it can´t get any better for me!!!

  • @vanessamcqueen11 What's the first favorite? Like... whats better than starless? lol

  • @vanessamcqueen11 You my friend are SO right. The build at the end gets my blood pumping uncontrollably. And I am honored to be in a small class of people who can say that :)) I think that we have to have a special key shaped hole in our spirit that this amazing music fits into perfectly! LOVE Crimson!

  • One word... WOW!!!

  • The Mars Volta borrowed a lot from King.

  • this songs better with Cross on it :)

  • As much as I love this live version, I miss the Mel Collins Sax at about the 8:30 mark

  • is it me or does hyde from that 70's show look a lot like fripp?

  • @grevejp44 Kinda.

  • Spelt????

  • 8:00 the drummer is MENTAL XD 10:15 he's like 'fuck fuck fuck fuck how much longer do i have drum in 13/16?!

  • 8:00 drummer is MENTAL! XD

  • Robert Fripp is my master !: D

  • @mrjohn1964

Nope. The song's name is Starless. It was released on the 1974 album Red. Starless and Bible Black is a completely different album from the same year.

  • Wow

  • I saw King Crimson twice, right after Lark's Tongue in Aspic came out and then a year or so later for Starless and Bible Black. Those two shows were the best of I've ever seen by any band.

  • 30 years later= Mars Volta

  • "Tuning a Mellotron... doesn't." - R. Fripp

  • This is the best piece of music I have come across in a very long time - it never loses it's charm. It made me explore their other work, but nothing touches this. That guitar at the end delivers .... the whole piece builds and builds. I like the USA live version best, but this youtube upload is a gift - thanks

  • This is fuckin impressive.

  • Chapeau!

  • Great, thanks!

A small note: It gets a bit out of sync towards the end. No big deal, but it's a bit frustrating to see Bill's great drumming out of sync.

  • @Chyrre Yeah, I know. I edited the video before I posted it from two separate videos. The transfer of video from tape to digital really through it out of sync. I worked on it for a long time, but just couldn't get it to sync up fully. Oh well, you get what you pay for, right?

  • @Chyrre this new version is better synced: /watch?v=B7LeM1G_Ep0

  • Wow, classic Krimso. Love it.

  • Thanks for uploading!

  • Guessing that this is early enough that Wetton hadn't decided on the lyrics yet... other than that- the performance is stupendous!

  • good performance but i gotta say it works better with the sax

  • Fripp is fuc...g geniuos. This is the best song of all times !!!! Greetings from Poland ;o)) Greetings from our band Obywatel NIP Mr. Fripp ;o))

  • Fantastic...that main melody line is even more beautiful on violin. Sends shivers down my spine...

  • NO WORDS!!!!!

    Thanks for this!!!!

First time I see it on vid

  • I Am So Glad that this footage exists, I have yet to watch the clip (which I shall do right now) but am giving my thumbs up in Gleeful Doomy Anticipation.

  • Que joya de vídeo!!!

  • just realised you spelt CRIMSON wrong.

  • @rawfflecakes Yup, there it is. Pobody's Nerfect...

  • @broodthefire lol... tats thrue

  • @rawfflecakes Realized, Spelled

  • @rawfflecakes Spelling corrected! Finally got around to editing it :P

  • @rawfflecakes

    spelled*

    heh. just sayin

  • YESSSSS

  • @rawfflecakes No, this is Crimson!

  • OBRA MAESTRA

  • the 13/8 section is brilliant, the intro and main song structure is beautiful, and robert fripp looks...bored.

i would be bored playing two notes over and over again if i had fripp's genius. either that or i'd jizz and fall over shaking because of the bruford/wetton rhythm section.

the king lineup of king crimson.

  • the middle part is something mesmerizing

  • do us a favor.....

if anyone owns various live versions of Starless.....please POST the different lyrics....ALL of them....one by one, because the LP Vinyl version has lyrics that sound NOTHING like this or the concerts later (Kassel, Asbury Park, Providence, etc etc)

Thanks a bunch, great download....let's hope it stays here for awhile!.

    Crimson_King73

  • just think how many post-rock bands must have been influenced by that crescendo guitar part

  • Five Stars

  • Wow, this is incredible. Never knew there was a video of this. Epic, groundbreaking etc.

  • AWESOME...!!!

  • an early version?? lyrics dont match the album version

  • Comment removed

  • @kaptainkaraoke Yes the song used to have other lyrics, as you'll hear in any live album from 73-74 KC such as USA (with bonus tracks) or the amazing 4CD box The Great Deceiver

    Stunning video btw!
