Incredible musical moment, captured on tape. A copy of this performance should be vaulted, so future generations can see what we (well, I've been a big fan and KC for since before this song came out...) achieved. Lovely.
Impresionante, cuantos elementos en escena, magnifica la conceptualizacion de desarrollar música de este nivel, indudablemente de pocos como lo hace el rey carmesí.
@1984therocker Hahaha! It's a superb song, isn't it? A very close second to my personal favourite 'The Devil's Triangle'. Extremely eerie & astral. I also like 'Epitaph' and 'Lark's Tongues In Aspic (Part 1)" but that's all merely my personal choice. King Crimson are overall one of my favourite bands.
In most cases, those who disliked the video are dissed by those who liked it, but in this case, I express pity for him/her. How alone they must feel to be foolish/close-minded/crazy enough to dislike such artistry. It could keep me up at night...
@semanray Actually this is probably my favourite King Crimson song, it is beautiful & haunting. I also love The Devil's Triangle, Lark's Tongues in Aspic (Part 1) and Epitaph.
King Crimson and van der graaf generator...the 2 most amazing prog band ever... of the 70's...of course...King Crimson after the 70's were boring and VDGG just the shadow of themselves.....
Does anybody have any idea what the meter is in the breakdown in the middle with the wicked bass line. My drummer and I used to listen to this over and over again for hours trying to figure it out. We never got it, but it was still time well spent.
Pardon my poor grammar below, I'm typing this on a mobile phone. Can anybody please recommend me some other good quality live Crimson videos on this website? There's just so much stuff to trawl through on here. Cheers. V
@broodthefire You can get new & improved mellotrons. They put them back in production about a decade or so ago. They're extremely expensive & I'd hate to think how much shipping it would cost to ship it here (Aust). Mine cost $4k in the '90s. It's came with a second tape rack of 3 sounds. The tape rack currently in it has this classic Crimson string sound, classic Strawberry Fields Forever flute sound & choral voices.
This band are incredible. I love the insane build up climatic ending. This is my second favourite King Crimson song. They are one of the main reasons I bought a Mellotron 400.
@vanessamcqueen11 You my friend are SO right. The build at the end gets my blood pumping uncontrollably. And I am honored to be in a small class of people who can say that :)) I think that we have to have a special key shaped hole in our spirit that this amazing music fits into perfectly! LOVE Crimson!
Nope. The song's name is Starless. It was released on the 1974 album Red. Starless and Bible Black is a completely different album from the same year.
I saw King Crimson twice, right after Lark's Tongue in Aspic came out and then a year or so later for Starless and Bible Black. Those two shows were the best of I've ever seen by any band.
This is the best piece of music I have come across in a very long time - it never loses it's charm. It made me explore their other work, but nothing touches this. That guitar at the end delivers .... the whole piece builds and builds. I like the USA live version best, but this youtube upload is a gift - thanks
@Chyrre Yeah, I know. I edited the video before I posted it from two separate videos. The transfer of video from tape to digital really through it out of sync. I worked on it for a long time, but just couldn't get it to sync up fully. Oh well, you get what you pay for, right?
I Am So Glad that this footage exists, I have yet to watch the clip (which I shall do right now) but am giving my thumbs up in Gleeful Doomy Anticipation.
the 13/8 section is brilliant, the intro and main song structure is beautiful, and robert fripp looks...bored.
i would be bored playing two notes over and over again if i had fripp's genius. either that or i'd jizz and fall over shaking because of the bruford/wetton rhythm section.
if anyone owns various live versions of Starless.....please POST the different lyrics....ALL of them....one by one, because the LP Vinyl version has lyrics that sound NOTHING like this or the concerts later (Kassel, Asbury Park, Providence, etc etc)
Thanks a bunch, great download....let's hope it stays here for awhile!.
@kaptainkaraoke Yes the song used to have other lyrics, as you'll hear in any live album from 73-74 KC such as USA (with bonus tracks) or the amazing 4CD box The Great Deceiver
i assume wetton was mostly improvising the lyrics before the recording of the red version
