  • The saddest music ever written. R.I.P DSCH.

  • Shostakovich wrote this while he was hiding in cabin in the woods after a confrontationover his 4 th symphony. This piece was intended to be his suicide note. Stolin had threatened to kill Shostakovich and everyone he loved if he didnt write music that support stolin. The piece reflects his emotions as he contemplated suicide. If you enjoy his music i highly recommend readin his book testimony and learning more about his life

  • this is my favorite movement. the emotion is tangible

  • what quartet is playing this?

  • This video contains content from UMG. It is not available in your country.

    Sorry about that.

  • Shostakovich wrote this as his epitaph becase at the time he planned to kill himself.

  • I finally found it... this is it.

  • Shostakovitch is like sex Its so good , but it ends too fast.

  • I much prefer the really chaotic classical stuff. Anyone know of any?

  • @DethLector Have you listened to the other movements of this quartet? If not, try at least the second movement. Alternatively, try Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Schoenberg, Berg, Webern, Penderecki, Lang, Wolfe, Gordon.

  • @DethLector Theres loads.. Shostakovich's Symphonies are mostly chaotic.. definately listen to his 10th symphony 2nd movement.. Stravinsky - Rite of Spring, Tchaikovsky - 1812 Overture, Grieg - In hall of the mountain king, Holst -the Planet suite + obv thousands more.. you just gotta explore

  • @DethLector suggestion diabolique by sergei prokofiev. the death metal of classical ;)

  • There is just so much great Russian classical music.

  • @crysiseternity yeah, i think the russian stuff = the best, much much more feeling in it i think

  • @miepdetruus Yeah, just amazing.

  • I see an image in my head with an old man, dying alone full of regret and shame in a secluded, dark valley.

  • @RiokaSon Babi yar. Us Jews have gone through way to much shit.......

  • @whythewar1 ....this piece is dedicated to the victims of fascism and war. it isn't just in memory to the holocaust. Shostakovitch was deeply affected by the Russian revolution, the communist take over, and all of the people that where killed in the middle of every thing. open your eyes there is so much more to his piece of art than one can even realize. I don't want to sound disrespectful but more has happened in this world than just the holocaust. Please understand that.

  • @awhitenredd Never said anything about this piece being dedicated to anything. RiokaSon's comment reminded me of Babi yar.

  • @whythewar1

~In the score, right at the top of the piece right under the name it reads that this work is dedicated to the victims of fascism and war. It is there. I'm very sorry if I interpreted your comment incorrectly but I have gotten very sick of a large majority of people thinking that this is written in memory of the holocaust. It gets very frustrating after awhile that nothing full of sorrow and anger can be written for anything but the holocaust.

  • @awhitenredd I understand, assumption is the unforseeable flaw of mankind.

  • @RiokaSon I can see this as well, but i also see the anger and the sadness of someone seeing family dying after all they have done has seemed pointless

  • So beutiful the DSCH motif. So ... Shostakovich

  • Sadness, beauty, and darkness spiraling together and flowing like a river.

Listen carefully. Shostakovitch knew how to make time stand still.

    Truly cathartic.

  • A perfect mix of harmonic beauty, and dissharmonic pain.

  • ehttsinaip...i definintely agree that Shostakovich was the rightful heir to Beethoven's legacy as the master of the string quartet. if you haven't already, listen to Beethoven's C# minor quartet, Op.131. it's absolutely amazing.

  • The Emerson Quartet's reading is very fine. Those not acquainted with the recording by the Borodin Quartet, who rehearsed the work with Shostakovich, may wish to seek it out. The Borodin's performance is overwhelming in its emotional depth.

  • Hey, could you forward the link to the Borodin Quartet performing this peice. I can't seem to find it.

  • The Borodin's 1978 recording is now posted n 3 parts

  • Yeah can you share the borodin quartet performance?

  • The tears of millions make an ocean of pain.

Shostakovitch feld all the pain of his people.

RIP my hero...you as deathless as the wind.

  • Rest in peace Shostakovich

  • Absolutely beautiful...there sure aren't many composers like Shostakovich.
