It must be out of fuel, you did not start the engine, when the fuel gauge reads empty, it automatically means eat me on this fuel system.

the long shaft were normal in the old cargo ships because they use to have a cargo hold behind the accomodation and engine room ,today there are a few ships with a hold back ,the most are big container ships

@maurizianodaniel, I know a series of ro-ro ships in which they put the engine room in the bow. IIRC it had two medium-speed engines.
