  • Awesome song my favorite, I agree with cristysoh, plus the last minute of the song is some fantastic pickin'

  • Admit it. You came here for 70 chapters of Applesack and Charity didn't you?

Thumbs if you get my reference!

  • @wheetman is correct. What a performance, this is magic. Shawn is coming to Nashville TODAY to start recording a new album with Buddy Miller ... such good news to all of us who sit and scratch our heads wondering why this woman is not a superstar. Instead, we're stuck with Gaga, Gag, being the operative letters.

  • Shes ,AMAZING ! can you check out me singing this live on my channel ? :)

  • Stuart Smith also played on Rosanne Cash's "The Wheel>R.C. is married to John Levanthal who co-wrote with Shawn on many songs. S.S. made the wheel amazing.

  • This one and "Shotgun Down The Avalanche" on her first album made me an instant Shawn Colvin fan. She's just raw talent on the hoof. Great live version here.

  • @altcountryguitar You are SO right.

  • Utter brilliance.

  • anyone know who the other players were? excellent taste and tone.

  • @wheetman Somebody correct me if I got it wrong. Steuart Smith on electric guitar and Larry Klein on bass.

  • I remember seeing this episode of Sessions at West 54, this was when I first listen to Shawn Colvin. Great to see it here...

  • Most times the movie is not as good as the book. The live version not as good as the original. This is the exception. Far more compelling and energetic live.

  • I still get chills when I watch this video. I have seen Shawn sing this live many times, but this ensemble just blows me away! One of my favorite songs ever!

  • In 1993, I had never heard of Shawn Colvin, and a friend took me to see her perform at the Terrace Theater in Austin. She completely blew me away. I went out the next day and bought both the albums she had out then, and I have loved her ever since -- every album, and almost every song. There's probably no other artist I can say that about. Her work has been so consistently good. Thanks, Shawn, for all the wonderful music -- a wonderful gift...

  • whow!! what a song!! beautiful!! just love it!!

  • Great song....... should have more views.

  • What is so great is seeing the looks on the faces of all three musicians which confirms that they realise something special is happening in that moment. Thanks so much for putting this up. BTW, I can see where she's got the capo but does anyone know what tuning Shawn is using here?

  • @CharlieboyofBeech Just a simple drop E to D.

  • @breauxlg

Hey thx for coming back to me, but being a bear of very little brain I need some help with your response - do you mean lower E drops to D? Or the whole key drops to D - sorry to be dumb - please can you spell out what each string is tuned to. Best, CharlieboyofBeech

  • This song deserves every plaudit. As a description of the lost innocence of childhood it has no equal that I've heard. I discovered Shawn Colvin from hearing a London DJ playing the single of "Another round of blues co-written with Larry Klein. Finding the single some two or three years later and discovered Steuart Smith's stunning guitar playing on other tracks and was hooked. As wonderful as her subsequent work has been, the sheer exuberance of this performance puts it in a class of its own.

  • freakin suuuhweeeett

  • LOVE this amazing song and her voice:D

  • makes me full of energy

  • That's Larry Klein, her ex, on bass

  • @danlay Duhh--- Not shawns ex, but Joni Mitchells. My head was up my arse.

  • the guy playing bass is KILLIN it! WHEW!!!!

  • This a song written and performed best by Jennifer Knapp. She is the best. If you like good singer/songwriters, check her out.

  • You may like Jennifer Knapp but she did not write this. The best is always the author.

Diamond in the Rough Colvin / Leventhal 1988

  • @johnwademyers unless the author is bob dylan lol

  • this is so kick ass good!!

  • Saw Shawn last night at Yoshi's in San Francisco. Perfect form! Always!

  • Best song she ever recorded.

  • @cristysoh Correction, Another Long One, or Kill The Messenger, these are the best Shawn has recorded.

  • @wong2b Changing my reply. I think you could make an argument for Shotgun being better than this, but only barely.

  • The guitar player looks a lot like the guy who plays with the Eagles now that Felder isn't with that band.

  • @BASSOR15

It is Steuart Smith. Good eye!

  • The shirt helped...Henley and Frey seem very fond of those type of shirts!

  • Yeah! I love the Eagles and I'm proud Steuart works with them. Saw them jammin' here a few years back, and it was amazing!

  • I remember seeing this when it first aired on TV. Awesome! WHO IS ON ELECTRIC GUITAR?

  • Stuart Smith is on guitar.

  • love it!

  • great song!

  • I can't stop watching this!! I still get goosebumps. What great chemistry. My favorite music video by far. I love Jennifer Knapp, but this is out of the ball park.

  • Shawn! Love you and always will. Keep on swimming you beautiful gift from God!!!

  • To see her smile and have so much fun. Thanks for posting this.

  • I've watched hundreds of live performances on YouTube and this is easily in my top 10. Shawn's voice, hands, and mind are touched by God, and what a great arrangement and choice for musicians! Is that Larry Klein on bass? Who is that magician on electric guitar? This performance is a perfect musical storm.

  • Yes, that's Larry on bass. The magician is Steuart Smith, who worked on the Eagles last album, and has been in their touring band a for a while now. Shawn has said this was her favorite performing lineup. Check out her DVD, which contains this version, and many other great videos.

  • I have been watching this over and over again. Diamond is a great song and this is the most energized version of it I have ever heard. How lucky those people were to be there to see and hear it live.

  • Love it!

Great digitally modeled 12 string guitar too!

  • Glad to find this performance! Love it!!

  • OMG, this is from that show Sessions at West 54th street from PBS. I snuck off from work in the city to be in the audience to see this when I won tickets, ahh, it was so much fun!

  • whoa, what a trip. I've never heard this song done by anyone but Jennifer Knapp. I thought it was Jen's song, but I guess I was mistaken.

  • I Just Heard Jennifer Knapp's Version And It Weak Compared To Miss Colvin's.

  • well, it's a matter of taste I guess. I prefer Jennifer Knapps version myself. :-)

  • Fantastic version of an awesome song. Shawn sounded great and nice guitar work.

  • This is also on her Polaroids DVD-- which I own ;)

    Fucking love this performance!

Its the best performance of this song EVER.

    Great threesome.

    Ooh & Go Larry!

    :)

  • I think I remember seeing this performance on Sessions at West 54th on PBS.

  • Yes, I have it on one of their compilation DVD's. I think it's the best commercially released live Shawn performance I've seen.

  • me too!
