On this date in 1960 {Feb. 22nd} "Greenfields" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100; eventually it peaked at #2 {for 4 weeks} and spent 20 weeks in the Top 100, was also the groups debut record on the charts.
Ranked 13th on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 1960 chart...
The Vogues' covered version in 1969 peaked at #92...
I very like this song. I listen it from childhood. I listen it every night. The song take me in green fields with white cloud, rivers. It help me exit city with busy, competitive, work. I feel relax. I love nature
The most increadible harmony in any group. I love all their songs and especially Greenfields. Brings back tons of memories from my youth. I remember when Dick Foley was a host on KIRO's NorthWest Afternoon. Many times the group would come together on the show to sing. It was fabulous!!
Stefanie Petsch was super cute! She appears in several other YouTube videos — just type "Stefanie Petsch" in the search window, and it will give you all the links to them.
I recall that this song was played in an instumenatl version if John Wayne's "The Alamo." When he is waiting at the Alamo, waiting for the Mexican Army's final assualt, his friend asks, "What are you thinking about Davy?" Crockett responds "I am not thinking, I am remembering.'
@arisalexis3 That's actually Green Leaves of Summer, which was released as the flipside. I played both sides of that record until it was worn out, but "Greenfields" was my favorite.
There is also an Estonian version of this song, "Rohelised niidud" which is almost like "Greenfields". It has been really popular in Estonia and is still in people's hearts. It reminds me of my father, he used to sing this..
some people actually asked me why I listened to this kind of music. what is wrong with the young population? I don't get it. what more than this could be wanted from a song?
The Russian version is called "City of Childhood" "Город детства" The song is about a man wanting to return to his childhood, to his "City of Childhood" My favorite performance of this song is by today's popular Russian artist, Stas Pieha
It was the early sixties, I was there, and listening on my older brothers new stereo, The Brothers Four, and the Beatles, this was my network of music!
Green Fields, and Mean MR. Mustard!
Strange my fellows thought, but not me!
And, you should see polythene Pam, shes so good looking that she looks like flat top white clouds high above!
I have not heard this song for ages! In the sixties of the last century :) I heard it several times at nights in a restaurant at a Hungarian summer resort, and I loved to watch couples dancing for this song. Many thanks for posting it! You gave my youth back :)

Once there were green fields kissed by the sun
Once there were valleys where rivers used to run
Once there were blue skies with white clouds high above
Once they were part of an everlasting love
We were the lovers who strolled through green fields
Green fields are gone now, parched by the sun

from the valleys where rivers used to run
Gone with the cold wind that swept into my heart
Gone with the lovers who let their dreams depart
Where are the green fields that we used to roam
I'll never know what made you run away
How can I keep searching when dark clouds hide the day
I only know there's nothing here for me
Nothing in this wide world, left for me to see
ulik888 1 year ago 3
Still I'll keep on waiting until you return
I'll keep on waiting until the day you learn
You can't be happy while your heart's on the roam
You can't be happy until you bring it home
Home to the green fields and me

Vocal harmony is a forgotten art (in pop music). What a pity.

There is a Vietnamese version of this song too. But, the original lyric is really unchangeable. Where are such song writers and singers nowadays?
