This is probably the most powerful and moving film I've ever seen. So much so I cried at the end. I've never cried at a movie since then or before it. I think everyone can relate to Lester in one way or another.
I miss this. I miss when the winners were unpredictable. It's almost pointless to air the Oscars anymore because they have the winners already picked out pretty much.
So many great films were nominated. Truly a good movie year. But indeed American Beauty is still one of the best movies I've ever seen. I still remember being sad for several days after Lester got shot. :')
Wow... 1999 was a great year for film all those and Fight Club, Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut, The Matrix, Toy Story 2, The Hurricane--- the list goes on and on...
@cinemapsycho91 dude American Beauty is a masterpeace one of the best screenplays ever and the fact that you think its the worst movie to win best picture is so fucking wrong so go fuck yourself
@cinemapsycho91 Hey asshole, you may think that it was a mistake, but that doesn't make it true. In fact, who's to say ANY movie is undeserving. There's no right way to do art. I personally didn't enjoy Shakespeare in Love, but it was still a well made movie and deserved every bit of that oscar. And so did American Beauty!
American Beauty winning for Best Picture was a bunch of bullshit, Nothing special about that movie what. It was one of the Academy's biggest mistake since the year before when Shakespeare in Love won for Best Picture. Magnolia was the most deserving film of the year. It was the most original and entertaining film of the year.

Out of these nominee's American Beauty deserved it, because its just a great film reguardless. But for me, the best of the year was Being John Malkovich.
@Hemloch you definetely haven't seen The Green Mile (1999). Although i really liked american beauty i'd have to say that the green mile is much better.

By the way, the announcer for that ceremony: Marty Richards, producer of the 2003 Best Picture winner, "Chicago."

This cracks me up. Sam Mendes is such a hack. Michael Mann is a true genius and The Insider was a near-perfect movie.

oscarxp25 1 year ago 2
No one really mentions this very often about the Oscars.
But I really like the stage design of that year's award show.
Last years stage design was as dreadfull as the rest of the ceremony.
Any thoughts on this topic, anyone?
PS: Oscarwinner Bruce Cohen is this years producer of the Oscars.
Hopefully he can make up for last years disaster.

@Hemloch hmm American Beauty was a grat film but THE best? i'd say...
films better than American Beauty in 1999: Magnolia (Paul Thomas Anderson has never won... why?), Fight Club and Three Kings.
films as good as American Beauty in 1999: The Sixth Sense (fuck today's M Night Shyamalan), The Insider, and Man on the Moon.
films that are very good but not like American Beauty: The Matrix (literally fuck the shit sequels), The Virgin Suicides and The Green Mile.
