A lot of it is his ability to let his shoulders follow and support his arm swing rather than dragging his arms through impact with shoulders. If you can freeze it halfway down, look how far back his shoulders are staying while his arms swing down on the right path and the hips have cleared--huge differential between hips and shoulders.
@emncaity This is something I have been able to teach myself with the original swingrite aid. Very amazing, to say the least. I can get it to deploy with the setting at #1, but have yet to get that speed onto a ball. For me, it feels like the second my shoulders unwind early the power just goes out the window. the power is all the ability to stabilize your body and give the clubhead that vicious snap at the bottom using hand and forearm strength. everything the body does is reactionary.
Freddie is proof positive that if you have great tempo, you can overcome what many people call swing "flaws." I freaking love watching Freddie swing!
I don't think many golf teachers would advocate learning Freddie's swing exactly. But every single one of them WOULD advocate copying his tempo. If you have a smooth tempo like that, it WILL make your swing better. No matter what you swing like.
Here's a natural golf swing like Bobby Jones and Sam Snead. No forced motions from Freddy. The question remains of why he never won big like Tiger, Jack, Arnie, etc.??? Anybody know the answer to this one?
Freddie has never been a stronger putter. The biggest reason for this is because of his ailing back. He was never able to put in the necessary practice time in due to the excruciating pain he has endured over the years. If it weren't for his bad back I think he would have won a good 5+ majors.
la de da da de da da. Hey I'm Fred Couples. I hardly swing the club and hit it 300+ with ease. I wish you could do the same thing. Excuse me I have a call from some playmate again. how boring.
If you watch Freddie on the course he really does swing pretty hard, it just looks laid back on TV. Also his shoulder turn is absolutely enormous, which adds to that laid back perception.
No doubt a pretty swing. Couples' trademark is how high he brings his right elbow (see 0:15). It's something that most pros try to guard against (you'll see them doing the glove drill, where they put a glove under the right shoulder pit, and make sure they do not drop it on the back swing). Freddie swings with abandon, it's pretty and it works for him, but not advisable for most.
he moves through the ball so well, awesome tempo and such a late hit. You can hear the snap from his massive club head speed he generates, a pure hitter regardless of what the text book says, pure.
Hey don't be so defensive. He does a LOT OF THINGS that aren't recommended but it works so well. I've watched Fred's swing so much because I love it, and I incorporated the flying elbow (which is the KEY to his fluid swing throwing motion) and past parallel looping position at the top. Vijay said this year he was working on doing the same thing. Lighten up, but if you want to get pissed off, I'll give you something: Fred can't putt worth a damn.
I get a kick out of people pointing out what Couples does "wrong". He hits the ball a mile, he is very relaxed over the ball and his tempo, rhythm and timing are a thing of beauty. He has zero thoughts about mechanics when over the ball. The loop, or steep backswing and shallow downswing gets the club to the ball on the inside. He has a strong grip, stands open to the ball and hits a fade. It definitely works for him
The 'weird jutter' is the so called 'magic move.' It's the shift of weight to the left while moving the right elbow in to his side. Harvey Penick would talk about this I believe.
Yeah, you don't see it from the front. I think he's trying to transfer his weight and bang those hips through as quickly as possible so he can generate all that clubhead speed.
Holy shit, he swings pretty fucking hard...

There's another thing Fred does different: his hip moves farther to the left, past his left foot.

Dreama40 4 years ago
Bunch of things "wrong" with Fred.
Flying elbow
Right leg goes straight
Club way past parallel
Feet are moving and bouncing around too much
I don't see the big loop he used to have, perhaps it's the angle.
Since Fred hits the ball the furthest with the least effort, maybe this is just the most efficient way to swing a club.
I find the loop to work well for me as well (but not nearly as well as Fred). Anybody else like the loop?
