Well at least this Hollywood crap is a bit more realistic than most. It's much tougher in real life you know (false arrests, negative pay, suspicions off "authorities" EXACTLY when I'm totally at peace with myself and anyone good around me... e.g. when I'm solidly getting on with my JOB doing 100 pages of maths a day (whether in a UK-scum free, booze-free, economy-free bedroom... or at the Oberwolfach Institute in Germany). When I want to chill I have NO PROBLEM whatsover...
"Daddy and Mommy are having a little discussion about you now, son. Could you excuse us?" This happens every day at millions of households, those parents pushing for little Einsteins/Cindy Crawfords and not letting their kids the confidence TO BE WHO THEY... ARE.
I always hear him repeating that triplet "he can handle the problems, he can handle the work, and he obviously handled YOU!" that is a superior piece of writing, right there ladies and gents. And this scene is so convincing because these two guys argue like real friends, like real people. When will walks in and sees that's its probably a total shock that others value his future that much.
@droid740 I feel the same way! Especially when Will hears them arguing i always felt like he may have thought, "Damn, these two guys really care about me!"
Lambeau just doesn't want Will to regret not taking his opportunity because he thought he was somehow above trying. What he doesn't understand is that Will is too fragile, emotionally, for things to be that simple - only Sean does, because he was abused as a child too. And as Will's therapist, Sean's not at liberty to discuss what Will tells him, so he can't just explain it to Lambeau.
I can't stand that mathematician, he's so up himself and arrogant. Stuck in his own little ivory tower world just like some lecturers at a certain university of a state called queensland I go to. that's right, f@€k uq.
@superheronumber1 Actually Lambeau (the mathematician) is right in his own way. Sean has a major chip on his shoulder and HE'S the one who's insecure about his lack of success. Lambeau isn't criticising Sean's lack of success; he's criticising Sean's attitude that if you're successful you must be a prick and that you're better off settling for the mundane. Chuckie later says pretty much the same to Will - that it's stupid to sit on a winning lottery ticket because you think its better to be poor
the last shot of the scene is beautiful. You forget that Will is some prodigal genius and all you see is some oblivious kid amongst parents fighting for what's best for him.
Robin Williams, Matt Damon, Stellan Skarsgard, Ben Affleck, and Minnie Driver... All of them had Oscar worthy performances in my book. To this day, my mind is still blown by how incredible this film is. Sooo Sooo good =)
you know what jerry? shove the medal up your fuckin ass! because i don't give a shit about your medal because i knew you before you were a mathematical god. when you were pimple-faced and homesick and didn't know what side of the bed to piss on
Lol "I can't stand that look in your eye." Haha Robin Williams is the best gotta love him. Also gotta love the evil glare the college profossor gave him after he said it haha. But my favorite line from Williams is. "I know who I am and i'm proud of what I do it was a constance choice I didn't fuck up!" So deep and true hard working people need to be like Williams and say it like he does to people who don't even try in life!
I completely underestimated Stellan Skarsgard in a role like this. I was talking out of my ass. he was fantastic. As was Robin Williams in his Oscar winning performance.
the problem with Jerry is that he kept trying to push Will. It's good for some people but with Will it doesn't work that way. The more he pushed Will the more Will kept pushing back. Jerry's a smart man but he doesn't understand pychological barriers like Shawn does.

I have a problem visualizing 2 top 1,000 high IQ people in this world using language like that. That would just show how poor there vocabulary is. Although it makes the movie so much better. I never knew Robin Williams could pull off such a serious role.
Both men were obviously in an emotional state. They were talking from the heart and yelling. I don`t think their swearing in any way relates to their IQ. It relates to their emotional state at the time. Both men are calm and calculated individuals but here they lose their calculated fronts. That was why they swore

you're wrong. An educated man, especially someone like an MIT professor, will never stoop to such levels as using curse words. The language, diction, and rhetoric used by educated people, especially professors, is incomparable to the daily run of the mill shithead you meet on the street. Robin Williams, in this movie, is obviously a failure academically and furthermore, he's a psychologist so him using such words is somewhat excusable/realistic but definitely not Skaarsgard.
Ooga001: You obviously missed the point of the movie if you cannot grasp the simple delicacy of this scene. As Woody Allen once said, "Intellectuals can prove that they are brilliant, but at the same time prove that they have absolutely have no idea what's going on".
Yea but his character grew up in a rough working class neighborhood. I know plenty of lectures from certain areas who still use colloquial expressions and slang - depending on who their speaking too.
Too bad that shooter in the VA Tech shootings did not have a sensitive psychologist like Sean here. Too bad. That gunman really needed a person like Sean to heal his inner demons.
So true. We need to understand the minds of our friends so these things cannot happen again. Perhaps if the VA Tech shooter had some friends who took time with him... P.S. Robin Williams BEST performance.
I assume your talking Robin Williams? I am not a fan at all of Robin (as a comedian)but he played out his role better than anyone possibly could have, especially the lake scene. Oscar, absolutely!
Mathmatical dick! hehehe. I see why! Jerry only cares about numbers, not feelings like Sean the shrink the does. Will Hunting is a genius beyond Jerry's presitgious Fields Medal (heck, Will could get the Nobel Prize EASILY), yet....Will lacks the normal human feelings that Sean helps to fill. Powerful powerful powerful humanity stuff here!
I agree yo! What a fucking nerd Jerry is! Sean is for real, sensitive to human nature, dat's why Will needs him B4 he cracks like the guy in the Virginia Tech shootings.
zadeh79, that comment you just made was anti-intellectual. the whole point of the movie is to get this brilliant guy to get his act together. it has nothing to do with murderers or rapists. retard.
The movie is so anti-intellecutal. If Will doesn't show up to lay bricks one day, I'm sure his boss can find two guys down the block to make up for his work. Of course, 'scientist' with his 'potential' isn't so easy to replace. And who's bricks is he layin' down anyway......a murder, a rapist? Maybe the NSA is better after all.
lol at 2:38 when they both look at him and he's staring I laughed out loud cuz it's so awkward!

That's a terribly delluded viewpoint you have.

Too bad that shooter in the VA Tech shootings did not have a sensitive psychologist like Sean here. Too bad. That gunman really needed a person like Sean to heal his inner demons.

so true man, so true...it's ashame

So true. We need to understand the minds of our friends so these things cannot happen again. Perhaps if the VA Tech shooter had some friends who took time with him... P.S. Robin Williams BEST performance.

I agree....he deserved his Oscar for it.
EricAKATheBelgianGuy 3 years ago
I assume your talking Robin Williams? I am not a fan at all of Robin (as a comedian)but he played out his role better than anyone possibly could have, especially the lake scene. Oscar, absolutely!

Mathmatical dick! hehehe. I see why! Jerry only cares about numbers, not feelings like Sean the shrink the does. Will Hunting is a genius beyond Jerry's presitgious Fields Medal (heck, Will could get the Nobel Prize EASILY), yet....Will lacks the normal human feelings that Sean helps to fill. Powerful powerful powerful humanity stuff here!
duromus 3 years ago 5
I agree yo! What a fucking nerd Jerry is! Sean is for real, sensitive to human nature, dat's why Will needs him B4 he cracks like the guy in the Virginia Tech shootings.
blackgangster1 3 years ago 3
There is no Noble Prize for mathematics. The Fields medal is the highest award for mathematics.

zadeh79, that comment you just made was anti-intellectual. the whole point of the movie is to get this brilliant guy to get his act together. it has nothing to do with murderers or rapists. retard.
dicarlomj 3 years ago
FUCK YOU PALSY! How is that for intellectual?
zadeh79 3 years ago
The movie is so anti-intellecutal. If Will doesn't show up to lay bricks one day, I'm sure his boss can find two guys down the block to make up for his work. Of course, 'scientist' with his 'potential' isn't so easy to replace. And who's bricks is he layin' down anyway......a murder, a rapist? Maybe the NSA is better after all.
