@Hofsteder Howeverthe EU is now facing it's first major challenge with this crisis those damn americans had to cook up. Depending on how skilled politicians in Bruxelles are the EU will endure or collapse ( i personally hope for the former ).
A solution would be to clean out the wounds ( the dreaded "defaulting" ) that even though painful would stop the bleeding of resources into more debt and stabilize the eurozone. Then the healing can begin - that's my opinnion.
@Hofsteder Your comment was 3 months ago, a lot has changed, i wonder if you kept your opinnion.

This is the general trend to unify Europe, first as a federation - where states become "regions" in said federation.

I know that many European countries have never been part of the Roman Empire, but Latin has been an international language for century even after the fall of the Roman Empire. I hope that everyone accept the choice of Latin as the official language of the EU (at least it's a dead language, so it's not representing a country more than others )

@MoaiMaea You know there was this one project i read about - where all lingvists gathered to work on a "world language". It borrowed from french, spanish and chinese.
Reality on the ground said otherwise and now the world speaks english :P
Yeah, I know what you mean. It’s called “Esperanto”, right? I don’t think it really incorporates all languages though.
Oh and I don’t mind English being the current “world language” either. I mean, sure, from a philosophical point of view it might be better to have a constructed one as world language because that way no one has an advantage but English simply suits this role so well since it’s a very simple language.
@MoaiMaea Have you not seen English native speakers make fun of foreign accents? English? Really? No, English is used because capitalist pigs force it down all our throats to the point I can't even speak either of my own people's language (Cherokee and Irish). Yeah, assimilate to an ethnic language because it's powerful and favors Anglo-Saxons over the rest of us. I fear I strongly disagree with you, English is dangerous as any other language with power. Fair and neutral please, for us all.
Dude, what bugs you so much? Let’s assume that we actually come up with a truly universal language. I take it you would be okay with it being taught as the first foreign language in schools, right? So what if an entire nation switched over to it become their official language? Wouldn’t they have the same advantage as Anglophones? Would that piss you off as well? Would you demand them to change it back because otherwise it would be “unfair”?
@converter7 Latin was not spoken across Europe, either. When Ancient Greek was spoken, there was no civilization in the rest of Europe. So, actually, it was the sole language of the European civilization.
The EU is not a Catholic union, I am sorry to disappoint you. Christian - yes, because European culture is historically largely based on Christianity. But it's not Catholic. And don't bring your local Irish problems to the European level. ;)
@tafricanski Firstly, I am not Irish. Secondly, I think you misunderstood me when I said catholic, I said catholic with a small c, nothing to do with Roman Catholicism or religion in general, catholic just means universal from the Latin, Catholicus and the Ancient Greek καθολικός. I don't have a problem with Ancient Greek and much of Latin borrowed from Ancient Greek, just as English borrows a lot from Latin. My point was, Latin was spoken across the continent. It was the Lingua Franca of the
@converter7 Roman Empire and then in the Middle Ages it spread across the rest of Europe, particularly Northern Europe with the Holy Roman Empire and the Undivided Church of the Pre-scism then the Roman Catholic church following the the tragic schism. It was the Lingua Franca of Learning and education in universities across Europe, Those under the Roman Catholic Church and those under the Eastern Church. Today we need unity through peace and Latin is the only neutral catholic language, English
@converter7 unfortunatly is not neutral at the moment, but it is a lingua franca, a catholic language. So the choice is between Latin and English. Sorry if I caused any offence brother, Shalom et Pax Europa brother!
@converter7 My bad. Sorry, I didn't know that "catholic" had a meaning as a word.
And sorry I thought you were Irish. You wrote that on your profile and I didn't bother to check out your home city. And it somehow made sense, combined with my former misunderstanding about the meaning of "catholic". ;)
Latin was a true pan-European language, you are right. It is not truly neutral, though, as it kind of symbolizes the superiority of the West over the East.
@tafricanski It's was the language of the Roman Empire, then it fell apart and its Eastern wing went back to Greek.
Then, centuries later, while the West was busy conquering the world and making science, we were busy being ruled and killed by the Ottoman Empire so we could not really participate in the process of development that happened. And that's why Latin was unchallenged.
I don't feel it as neutral... It's not a big issue, but I don't think we can find a truly neutral language.
@tafricanski So - why bother reviving a dead language when English is what it is now? I understand your feelings but... really, reviving Latin is not realistic.
Furthermore, the EU aims to preserve all language and cultural differences so I hope the future is indeed in being multilingual. I myself speak 3 of the official languages of the EU, one widely spoken but unofficial (Russian), I am intending to learn a 4th EU language in the next year and a 5th in the next 3 years. :)
@tafricanski Aye, you are right. I don't deny I like the idea of a Latin speaking Europe, but I lso share your scepticism that this could ever be the case again. As a pro-European who's first language is not an official European language and lives under a foreign government, I stress the importance of al European languages, especially minority languages. Every language of Europe is important to the foundations of the future EU, as all the languages of this continent unite us and are a part of us
@converter7 I would like to see Europe as a multi-lingual state, where all citizens are encouraged to be bi-lingual or multi-lingual. But it would be nce to see a common language spoken by all and personally I think Latin would be perfect for that. But I would hate to see mono-lingual Latin speakers. Native languages should be the most important language for each individual. As for what you say about Eastern Europe under Ottoman rule. I believe that to be one of the greatest tragedies of
@converter7 our shared European history. Especially as the Hellenistic world missed out on the reformation and industrial revolution. Especially when you consider the reformation would not have been possible without the rediscovery of Ancient Greek knowledge. I am happy to see you are another European polyglot :) But I must stress the importance if minority languages too, when they die, a part of Europe dies with them.
@converter7 I currently speak 2 official EU languages (English and Irish) 1 semi Official EU language (Welsh) and 1 Unofficial EU language (Cornish). I am currently learning my 3rd (or 4th depending on how you look at it) Official EU language (French) along with non EU languages Latin and Norwegian. Good luck with your language learning tafricanski :)
@tafricanski I see your point of view, but Ancient Greek has never spread out in Europe as Latin (it was used just in the Eastern Roman Empire, or Byzantine Empire)
latin should regain its status as lingua franca of europe. it should be taught in schools etc from early age. languages like french, german, english, spanish etc. could be optional languages. but latin should be used above them all
Why? That would be reviving a dead language, and I don't see why that's in any way better than simply teaching a language that's already living which is already spoken by hundreds of millions of people.
LATIN IS A DEAD LANGUAGE THAT LIVES ON THRU THE REINCARNATION OF ALL LANGUAGES. EVEN AS AN ENGLISH SPEAKER I CAN SAY THIS. AND FUCKING SPANISH IS TAKING OVER FUCKING EVERYTHING. ITS CRAZY. WHY THE FUCK DONT THEY TEACH FRENCH PORTUGUESE GERMAN RUSSIAN CHINESE KOREAN JAPANESE OR EVEN POLISH IN AMERICAN SCHOOLS LIKE THEY DO SPANISH!? DOUBLE STANDARD. THATS NOT RIGHT! BUT I DIGRESS. "GREETINGS FROM AMERICA". FEEL FREE TO JUDGE MY ENTIRE COUNTRY BASED ON ME ALONE.
I find it a language without legitimacy,Sanskrit or Anatolian should be the languages of a United Europe,as they comprise much of the lost indo european language, from where slavic, germanic and Italic languages derive.
@ViriathusVingathor Latin has been used in all Europe (I mean as an international language). Also, some European languages are not indo european ( Hungarian, for example)
To be honest, with all of the hateful, homophobic nonsense coming out of Poland, the Commission should really take away Polish self rule and govern from Belgium.
@Lyradin08 You're telling bullshit. I don't know how can you promote such a hopeless system like the european union. Size of its idiocy scares and ruining honest businessmen and this issue is more important than your silly tolerance. Furthermore, I do not intend to discuss with you because I know that people like you do not understands any logical requests.
I hate this man and most of democrats. Democracy (system where people aren´t chosen by merit but by their image) + american influence (cultural, political, (materialism, multiculturalism, false freedom, etc...) = destruction of europe!!!!!
We EUROPEANS need a Meritocratic Federal pan european nationalist single-party European Union NOW! Wake Up people, or face the destruction of our continent! EUROPE FOR EUROPEANS, HEIL EUROPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I ant to learn latin , too bad i emigrated here in canada , it wasnt my choice tought , ill go back when I finish university cuz I feel like a traitor to Europe. Can't wait to learn Latin when I get there, i was supposed to learn it in school but they don't have Latin here, hell they don't even have german , which sucks so much , I miss Europa , long LIVE EUROPA , UNITED!!!!!!!!!!!
they should move the capital to Berlin rather than Brussels. Brussels as the capital makes me feel that Belgium is running all of Europe and give everyone nothing but their yucky food. German, Italian, and french food better!
@aimmaster18 do you even know the basic Japanese grammar? Saying "Love Europe" as "愛ヨーロッパ" is just a big no... you should at least say "ヨーロッパ大好き" instead
@aimmaster18 I'm not a Japanese, though >< it's though when you're learning a language with a completely different set of symbols to work with.... I have memorized about 436 kanji characters now
Latin is already the official language of Vatican city, but as Italian I'd be happy if it was also the language of the UE. But Latin is difficult for the non-neolatins people, very complex grammar structure... it's hard also for the same Italians. English is easier
I never considered it, but Latin as common european language would be very dignifieing and somewhat beautiful. the latin language would once more live and would be the language par excellence!
Actually I like the fact we have so many different languages to cope with. Diversity ought to be maintained. Plus there is still that Germanic-Latin division we can still see today. In my opinion they should make it possible to learn more languages at younger ages for example in high school.
Is this the official version? Because the only text I ever knew to "Ode an die Freude" was "Freude schöner Götterfunken..." It sounds nice in Latin, though..very European ;)
Its the official hymne of the european union. It is an instrumental version of Beethoven's 9th symphony and thus shares its music with (most) renditions of Schiller's Ode to Joy.
There is no official text and there are many different versions in all european languages. This is by design, to emphasize the diversity of europe.
But "est europa nunc unita..." (i.e. this version) is seen by many as the de facto "national" anthem of the EU.
Est Europa nunc unita et unita maneat; una in diversitate pacem mundi augeat. Semper regant in Europa fides et iustitia et libertas populorum in maiore patria. Cives, floreat Europa, opus magnum vocat vos. Stellae signa sunt in caelo aureae, quae iungant nos
Of all the virtues of I possess, my greatest pride is in being part of the wonderful union and fraternity that is our beloved Europe. To all of my European brothers and sisters - it is an unequaled joy and pride to proudly be able to call upon you in times of joy as well as in times of need. I am grateful for each country, and I consider it an honour without compare to be united in Golden Stars. Love and all from Sweden. From Finland to Cyprus and Portugal to Romainia - unity manages.
absurd idea...revising Schiller... leave ode to joy as it is and not some "in maiore patria" bulls..t. The common and old culture in all its forms, colours and shapes is what unites and/or may unite Europe, not some neo-Latin newspeak inventions.Schiller and Beethoven were maybe German, but nobody in this continent will deny their all-European value and identity of their masterpieces.Ode to Joy was also translated to all European languages before anybody got the idea of EU... shows something, eh?
Don´t forget the translatio imperii. From 800 - 1806 the German King was also Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation (what a long name)
Within you have the Germans, Czechs, Parts of Poland, Baltikum and many other ethnic groups united.
Why? This is medieval (and today scientific) pronounciation of latin. In my opinion there are only two pronounciations of latin which should be used today - this one (medieval/scientific) and restitued classical. The others more or less follow pronounciation of national languages.
I know. I was referring to their pronounciation of "Europa". This song is a song to praise Europe, and they fail to pronounce "Europa". That is what upset me. Except for that, their pronounciation is acceptable.
what? I'm nor chinese nor japanese what you're talking about.
yeah you send money to East Europe but EU means European Union which means that we're all united but Spain is not a main donator, France and Germany are.
We should critizes america when needed, because as they so often demonstrate, they are not quite capapble of ruling all by themselves. Howver, we really need to stop bullshitting ourselves with idiotic Anti americanism. They are out closest ally, they share most of our values. When European leaders say that "we need to be a counterweigth to the US" that isn't the big issue. Being a counterweight to Russia, The Islamic world, China, India Brazil etc. are.
If europe begins in france, portugal is not europe too, right ? xD Do you want to know the stereotypes of portuguese in Spain ?
You are a stupid if you believe in stereotypes, stupidness haven't nationality. We have bad relationship because we are enemies (more you against us), you dont like to have a neighbour as spain, a world culture, the 8th world power, while Portugal is a dirty and lazy country. Instead insult my country you should work a bit more, portugal stinks and your accent too.
Hernabanana, are you a damn monkey,LOL, you speak like one, thank you for your comment, you are the exact proof of what I said.
The money you are talking, came from huge investments from France, and Germany, and UK,not spanish merit, thats why Spanish economy is today one of the most vulnerable.
Portugal at least is far more cleaner than Spain, less blood in our hands.....Basque nation,Catalonia.....genocides....
LOL
Spain a world culture, however overpassed by the Portuguese in coming years.

Furthermore, I do not intend to discuss with you because I know that people like you do not understands any logical requests.

Iltbsm 2 years ago 25
Actually I like the fact we have so many different languages to cope with. Diversity ought to be maintained. Plus there is still that Germanic-Latin division we can still see today. In my opinion they should make it possible to learn more languages at younger ages for example in high school.
Squig2510 2 years ago
Is this the official version? Because the only text I ever knew to "Ode an die Freude" was "Freude schöner Götterfunken..." It sounds nice in Latin, though..very European ;)
Iltbsm 2 years ago
Its the official hymne of the european union. It is an instrumental version of Beethoven's 9th symphony and thus shares its music with (most) renditions of Schiller's Ode to Joy.
There is no official text and there are many different versions in all european languages. This is by design, to emphasize the diversity of europe.
But "est europa nunc unita..." (i.e. this version) is seen by many as the de facto "national" anthem of the EU.

@Lyradin08 it has to be: Unio Europaea nostra patria est!

Ah, thanks for the correction =)

no problem, in latin the verb always comes at the the end of the sentence. Unionis is latin but it is genitivus, it has te be nominativus

Ah, so "Hymnus Latinus Unionis Europaeae" infact means "Latin anthem of the European Union"?

absurd idea...revising Schiller... leave ode to joy as it is and not some "in maiore patria" bulls..t.

Himno88 2 years ago

Portugal at least is far more cleaner than Spain, less blood in our hands.....Basque nation,Catalonia.....genocides....
