Actually, there is some kind of vacuum cleaner inside. It sucks down the media to keep it perfectly flat. A lot of the larger ink jet printers are also using this method nowadays.
It's called a carrier sheet. It's got a sticky surface just like a post-it note where you can stick your paper on. When you're using the machine to die-cut material you have to use a carrier film because otherwise you'll damage the machine.
