Seriously, it was a bit annoying that the vids didn't work. I updated flash also. Am using firefox, but can't see why it wouldn't work with that browser.

Well I couldn't see the blasted pictures, no idea why, downloaded the latest doodah but it still didn't work, I've probably got some nasty on my computer. So i decided to be your control. I got 7 out of 20 right without seeing the faces at all. lol One interesting thing though, to say a smile (or any expression) is fake simply because someone has been told to make it so does not mean there may not be genuine emotion behind it. Is this genuine? :) :P

I paused the video and took the quiz...I got a terrible score...I think it's because I have a misplaced desire to believe that people are sincere even when they aren't...

In my defense, if some researcher asked me to fake a smile, I think it would make me smile at the absurdity of the request, and the resulting smile would be geniune.

19/20 (missed #3) ...which really surprised me. I paused your video to take the quiz, but I already knew to look above the mouth, nearly ignoring it, and focus on the eyes. Nonetheless, I wasn't very confident in my ability to spot fake smiles (I checked the 5th box of the 7 that comprised the scale of confidence), as I underestimated how striking the facial differences are between them, and real smiles.

15/20. When it started I was not looking at any specific part, I was wrong in three at the beginning(1,2,4), at the end I was looking more to the mouths and I was wrong with the last two(19,20).

It's the eyes, they show a squint when you smile. :)

me too, only ten of 20. but i was watching them sober up at the end, thus thought it was a fake smile.

that's exactly what i did! i figured the smile "recovery" was a good indicator of whether they were really feeling it. some of them went right from smile to straight-faced, and those are the ones i figured weren't authentic.

I first realized that the smile was not limited to the mouth when my orthodontist asked me to smile with my eyes. Before that, I had never thought of it.
