You call people who you have played tennis with a dozen times friends? I would call them acquaintances. Maybe it's a cultural difference. I'm German (she's Swiss German) and I think that using the surname in such a public situation is normal.
I would call them my friends, yes, because they are! And I have played with them a lot more than a dozen times. I'm Irish, and we would find that situation normal, but She isn't so she should have more respect for her fellow players. Maybe it's only an opinion, I don't know.

All sports commentators call the players by their surnames. Why should the players do any different? Calling someone by their surname shows respect.
