Just in case you were serious or someone comes upon the question and doesn't know... There is no alternative for elbow grease. "Elbow Grease" is another way of saying, to put some hard work /physical strength into it.
what did you use to remove the finish on the blade? If just sandpaper, What grit? Have a BK-7 and BK-11 that I would like to try this on. Nice video. Great job!
@RPor1984 I left the onion on for an hour and then rinsed it with cold water. And yes, the darker lines are from the vinegar. I left it on for 15 minutes and then rinsed it off. I didn't think the lines were dark enough so I applied it again a second time. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.
How did you get the black coating off of it?
M3iscool 2 weeks ago
@M3iscool I used a coarse grit sand paper to start and worked my way to a finer grit.

I was thinking of using aircraft stripper to remove the finish, how bout that? What kind of onion did you use?
busared06 3 months ago
@busared06 I'm not to sure about the aircraft stripper. I used a regular white onion but I guess ant type of onion will work.

Have you found the patina finish to be durable when batoning/chopping/etc.?
nextexhale 6 months ago
@nextexhale Yes its extremely durable. it protects the high carbon steel much better than the original finish.

Thank you and sorry for my delayed response. I cut the onion into slices and laid the blade on them and them put more slices on top of the blade.
XX7Saint 7 months ago
Awesome video did you just cut the onions and sit them ontop or stick the knife through the onions

I love this finish, did you use a stripper/ or paint thinner to take the original finish off, or did you only use sandpaper, if so what grit? thanks
spencepb2x 9 months ago
@spencepb2x I don't remember what grit I started with. Start off with a heavier grit and use a lighter one as you remove most of the finish.

What did you use red wine vinegar, white vinegar, lemon juice?
anonomous53 1 year ago
@anonomous53 I used an onion to get the base patina and then used a q-tip with red wine vinegar to get the striping.
