Peggy Lee's singing is always so tantalizing...she always leaves something enticing just out of reach...she is the opposite of Madonna for example who shoves all she's got and more in your face
A truly great song by a truly great voice..This song reminds me of my Father..Peggy Lee, was his favorite singer..It's hard not to cry when I hear this..Haunting..
This song especially as it is sung by Ms.Peggy Lee holds the key to a really big mystery, the thing we all search for and sometimes never find. The real 'meaning' of Life.
It's a beautiful song, but it's also depressing, the idea that the most significant milestones of a person's life are letdowns (and the end of life, too...) if your life doesn't feel right no matter what you do, you can talk to a doctor, psychologist, pastor, or friend; there's no reason to go through life feeling constantly disappointed. Life is a gift from God, and there's no reason to go through it unhappily.
@TypeANegative Surely it's an observation. That's the reason there are so many religions because people don't want to believe "that's all there is". That's not "depressing". You can talk to who you like but I think you'll still find "That's all there is"
@computerrage Actually, thanks to Jesus, I've found quite the opposite :) My life is full of meaning and I don't feel aimless. I just want other people to know that they don't have to go through life feeling lost and unfulfilled.
This is as perfect as a song gets. Absolutely flawless illiteration and phrasing by Miss Lee. The orchestration tells as much of the story as she does. And my favorite lyric from any song ever written: "And I thought I'd die...but I didn't.." Great pictures of the great Peggy Lee, too!
I saw Peggy Lee in person in 1978-79 at the Sands in Las Vegas, and this was one of the songs she sang. I saw her several times when I was a teenager and she was HUGELY popular, then saw her last on that trip to LV. No one, not any one does it better. Or ever will in my book.
The song is uplifting in a sense... It is saying that instead of giving up, in the face of despair, "keep on dancing", "break out the booze and have a ball"...
I saw Peggy Lee on TV when I was about 5 and I was mesmerized by her and this song. And now at 54 and a gay man I'm still mesmerized by it. Especially where someone says if it's that bad why don't you just go ahead and end it and she says no! WOW!
Daddy died this past January. I wished so much at his memorial service, we had had a recording of this....Daddy loved Peggy Lee, and he loved this song. I miss you so much Daddy!
She compares what she knows of how things "should be"- what meaning they are supposed to have- with what she knows herself. When she is left with nothing, nothing known or predetermined, she decides for herself what meaning there is and what she will do. I don't see any reason to remain disappointed. Only when you maintain that things are as they shouldn't be, should you be disappointed. And who decides that?! So yeah, I really like this song!
when i was a little girl my house burnt down and my father barely survived by jumping out of a 2 storey window - we lost everything - this was just after my Mom died of cancer- when I finally met a decent man, he too died of cancer....then my sister died of cancer in 2009. Please celebrate what little life we have. I just wish hat I could be as passive as Peggy Lee is in this song...the message is to love those around you as hard as you can while they are here.
I love both Midler's and Lee's interpretation of this song, but Lee's is so much more haunting because the lack of emotion speaks so much louder than the emotion in Midler's cover.
This song has haunted me ever since I first heard it as a young girl. I never knew who actually wrote it until today. It really is a masterpiece...but, Peggy Lee sings it masterfully.
It was made for her to deliver.
Thanks for all the info posted with this UTube recording.
Thanks for the helpful info on Disillusionment. Haven't finished reading it yet, but am mightily impressed that Mann was only twenty-one when he wrote it.
Didn't know that Leiber & Stoller composed this masterpiece until I read the former's obituaries. Listening to this reminded me of "Somewhere Down That Crazy River" by Robbie Robertson. From one Baltimore guy to another, you were great, Jerry!
@Spectre590 Well, since there are 3 other videos here of Peggy singing this song live, the answer is 'no, that is not all there is!' :))) For anyone who might have not seen them, the video in which she is dressed in white (see right column in this page) is particularly great.
@Spectre590 Ha! Right question from you, but the answer still is, "no, that's not all there is." She sang the song in various TV shows, and some of those TV clips are around, too. We could play this game for a looong time. ;-)
Peggy was a stylist. She would take a song, change it to make it hers. She was a creative & versatile musician. She had a sound studio in her home. They don't make 'em like Peggy any more. Funny that I just realized this song was about a fire & not life but it works for both.
I really love this song and even though I was just a little girl when it came out, I feel a sort of connection to it. I guess it is the message that life is rarely what it seems to be and can often not live up to our expectations. The trick is in putting those expectations away and accepting life, come what may. Then when it presents you with roses, you will always be very pleasantly surprised!
The smokey voice of Peggy Lee is unique...many people have covered this one including Sinatra, but his version doesn't come near..i prefer Tony Bennett. Peggy Lee LIVED the words.
This is a beautifully philosophical song, talking about the illusions of this world (maya) we would all to well to heed it. Peggy's poignantly smooth tones just enraptures one.
What an amazing performance! Amazing, also, is the brilliant musical accompaniment. Listen closely to the genius of the absolutely perfect background to one of the finest voices of all time.
I don't think I ever thought I was being sung to be a real PERSON the way I feel when I hear Peggy Lee. I suppose Frank Sinatra was great, but he always sounded to me like the wallpaper. Maybe there was just too much Frank but, despite the legendary timing and interpretations, he always sounded more like backdrop than event. Nat "King" Cole is more to my liking, but even he sounded less personal than Peggy Lee, a great talent—she composed, too—from nowhere.
This song has always made me cry. I remember when it came out. Peggy Lees delivery is really the best. The song makes a statement that things really don't matter and as another poster says asks whether life is worth living or does life matter at all.
What a beautifull dramatic voice. The lyrics of this song are so profound that they are almost like an eery existentialist statement about whether life is worth living.
Peggy was great at what she did and I respect her a lot for working the trenches right up to the end. I wasn't around when she was big, but i still loved her voice.

Obviously he, an older more life-experienced man didn't quite get it, and I a green little 14 year-old grasped the depth of it's meaning. Cool.
