You have to be playing as the Paladin class to do this quest actually. You can befriend her in any class by giving her flowers or candy. If playing as a Paladin, you can go seek out the lover who killed her and defeat his spirit, thus releasing her.

Ha! You're right, the music makes it perfectly clear what sort of thing is going on. Your character survived, hordes of older and wiser people killed theirs off in the hope of getting any. A case of the emperor having no clothes?

It's always a hoot to visit old adventure games and see all the stuff you missed. Doubly so for us non-native English speakers: as kids we played in groups to work out every text box, and half the time someone'd ad-lib in something totally ridiculous. It was wonderful.
