Ok, now I'm confused a little bit. I was 8 when this showed debuted. Is this not the original opening? I'm used to the Charles Fox singers in syndication and like this one better. So, is there another opening??
This is the original opening. The Cowsills version was in Season 1, then the Charles Fox singers version in all subsequent seasons. In syndication, the CFS version is used for all seasons.

Sorry. This is NOT the ORIGINAL music introduction. I grew up watching this when it came out! This introduction is a newly composed one specifically for the DVD release and it frankly sucks. Check out You Tube for this classic series and you will hear the difference. It is OBVIOUS and extreme.
I can only gather I am use to hearing the Charles Fox singers version. I think this version is awful. So I offer my apologies. If this is was the ONLY time they used this music introduction, I probably was just too young to remember or did not see.
I grew up watching this as a young teen. I realize that many of you were just being born so I do not wish to offend; however, the intro truly SUCKS. The original music should have been kept. People who are looking to relive just a little bit of their childhood, do not wish to have it rearranged to suit a younger audience! The Cowsills might be a popular band; yet, this version of the intro is awful in my opinion.
No not at all. The introduction sucks rocks. The singing is fine; however, the original is superior and frankly it is the ORIGINAL which is what I would like to see and NOT a modified version set to please and attract and audience that was not even born then or simply in diapers! While I am sure the "Cow-sills," are good singers, they should have simply put in the original intro or at the very LEAST, allowed you to choose between the ORIGINAL and FAKE music introduction.
Just bought a copy of the newly released DVD at Wal-mart tonight....& what can I say? It contains 17 "full-length episodes" of the 1st season, & both the starting & ending theme songs sound just fantastic! Sounds even better hooked up to my stereo system, reminds me of old times on Friday nights when these episodes originally aired. This piece is a treasure, I highly recommend it to you fans of this show.
We also get to see the Love American Style players that did comedy vignettes before each episode for the first time since these first aired on ABC. They dropped this for syndication. And also great that they brought back The Cowsills' theme song from the 1st season. Can't wait for more.
Yes, especially considering that CBS DVD is not known for keeping music if it was done by a popular artist or artists (see: Happy Days: Season 2's revised opening)
BTW the beginning of that is kind of disturbing as it looks like the actress' head exploded ;-)
WOW!! I've been waiting to hear this old version for years.....THANK YOU for posting this! Any chance you may have & can post the ending theme song from the 1st season, also?
I loved this show. Loads of fond memories. ABC on Friday night at that time was invincible !!!!!

This was the best intro. They just had to alter it in the next several seasons and it sucked

Glad they worked on it and brought out a better version. I prefer the newer one by light years!

Well, the reason I ask is...The Cowsills version IS the original version...
JWLJN 3 years ago
No, it is supposed to sound that way, the harmonizing, I mean. The Cowsills did this and the harmony is great
GentleWill 3 years ago
Wow, one of the singers doing harmony on the actual phrase "Love, American Style" is seriously off key.

This version is so much better than the version that followed it not funny.
