@r1ccardo I think you didn't understand my post. I said Head Tracking is not suitable for pre-rendered movies like Avatar and others you have saw on your 3D TV with googles. The technology used in shutter glasses is stereoscopy, not head tracking.
Stereoscopic 3D + Head tracking + 360° would be something like the first holodeck... But Star Trek TNG was showing the future in a few hundreds years, so we are a little bit too fast.
Of course Head Tracking can't be used in a movie, since it is pre-rendered. Head Tracking is suitable only for real time rendering games, targeted for one person. The main advantage is prince (1% of a stereoscopic 3D) and no need to wear stupid glasses.
It is by far the most inteligent solution for PC gaming, but not suitable for movies or multiuser consoles.
If VR headtracking blows up then it'll mean 3D gaming is simply a matter of lightweight software downloads (probably not even that) - and not the heavyweight hardware updates we're being told is worth investing in.
The perspective is not correct if your head isn't the one being tracked.
What's happened here is very simple - in an attempt to keep selling stereoscope to us, we're shown a shit example of headtracking (What you saw on that monitor was actually a video of VR headtracking. The camera was just moving about as if it were being tracked), and then that shit headtracking example being made into 3D.
...why is the guy wearing a giant metal heart on a necklace, and why does he shake and pixelate after every other sentence? also, when he takes the glasses off it looks like he hasn't gotten sleep in weeks.
anagylph with 3d head tracking is the best method. i've thought of this idea before but i don't even have head tracking alone set up, so i'm glad someone else managed to show people that this can be done
yeah but combined with stereoscopic 3d it will be more immersive and the image will pop out more. Plus the infered lights could be placed on the 3d glasses for the headtracking.
I agree with R3skeen. Having both head tracking and stereoscopy is a bit of overkill...
Though I must add, that at times, when you need "in depth" precision, it should excel. Like with mesh editing. Or in Garry's Mod (that's a sandbox mod for HL2), where you'd need depth perception to accurately manipulate objects, but since you are in first person view and you aim to move things the ability of peeking over the held object would be a great power.
Overkill? Are you nuts? With headtracking only the image will be the same for your left and right eye, so you will still be looking at a plane. With stereoscopic depth added there isn't really any difference with reality! And you call that overkill? It's like Bill Gates' quote of the 70s: "No one will need more than 637 kb of memory for a personal computer."
No thanks, I am perfectly okay. And yes, it IS an overkill. You already have a perfectly convenient way of perceiving depth: stereoscopy. Now, while this method works simultaneously with multiple viewers, head tracking is strictly single-person. Also while there are both general and specific drivers for computer software to use stereoscopy there is no general head tracking driver; you must implement it to each software.
I can't really imagine wiggling my head while watching movies either...
My point is, that while it greatly enhances your experience it is narrowing the user-base and the ways it can be used. There is no backwards compatibility, so it may be the future, but like with most new technology, it needs a lot to develop. And like I said I don't think it has a place in filming(being simultaneously multi-usered and the fact, that people like to watch movies motionlessly), so it is stuck with games, where if you can't mass-produce your idea it is already dead.
With stereoscopy only the perspective will always be off unless you are on the exact centerline of the screen, and with headtracking only the image will be flat on the screen.
Yes, this is a one-person-only experience and yes it is game only. I think however that the market is big enough to implement this extra option to a POV game.
For film this is of course nonsense, you could only perhaps correct for the off-screen distortion.
Yeah, maybe, but don't you think first we'd need proper non-hacker hardware and software for head tracking? Or more importantly, wouldn't we need proper stereoscopic equipment and support widely available? Sure, there are some 3D monitors here and there, and there is the iZ3D driver, but the former is still not popular enough, while the later is far worse then it could be. I think you are thinking at least two steps further than where we are if you demand this technology in commercial use.
I have writtten an essay on this subject entitled "Virtual Space - the future of movies and video games"and made it into a website. I can't give the address here, but anyone interested can send me a personal message.
Sony is already working in this type of tecnology, stereoscopic tech are set to be release maybe on PS3, certainly during the next generation of machine. And the PSeye and the motion controller tecnology show at E3 there already using headtracking tecnology, this controller are coming on market next spring 2010.
totaly, if one of the next generation consels doesnt use some versioin of this technology for 3d games i will be reeli disapointed. espesialy wii, they are half way there already
Sterocopic 3D + Personal Viewpoint really would be utterly fantasic for gaming.
Heck, it might make jumping puzzles in FPS's actualy not frustrating ;)
So, wheres a download to the altered software?
If you expand it to work with NVidia's standard (though badly kept) sterodrivers, then people could use it with red/green, shutter or polaride image seperation techiques.
Just got the latest Gameinformer magazine and you are DAMN close to exactley what they are talking about doing within THIS YEAR ! they have alreay done this with pc but they are getting together with consoles to get this kind software working through a specialized screen for the PS3 Xbox and the F'in Wii (wich means you got to buy their T.v and glasses) they are saying it will cost around 600 $ for a T.v galsses bundle I CANT WAIT to play this for C.O.D 4 I will never leave my house again hahaha
actually no.. the Samsung television has a port for connecting a IR transmitter which allows you to use LCD shutter glasses.. 3D without the red and blue :)

Mmmm....It looks like only one person can be in front of the screen and appreciate the 3D effect.

Stereoscopic 3D + Head tracking = not needed.
Steroscopic 3D is just a way to 'trick' the mind into thinking its 3D.
Headtracking actually provides virtual 3D.

So does DDD actually have head-tracking in their driver? Or are they doing a bait and switch on us?
Autostereoscopic would NOT work. This only works with glasses. Autostereoscopic displays change based on your viewing angle.

what if you used an autostereoscopic tv? would that work too, or do you have to use a stereoscopic tv with the glasses?
