Such memories....I, a young teen admiring young Sara Jordan Powell singing in the various churches in Houston, Texas. I don't know what I admired most, her beautiful poise and appearance, her assured messages in song, her gift of singing like the most precious bird from the Kingdom of God, or her very kind and soft "hello"s to me each time she saw me. I always wished I knew what to say to her. She always smiled like she knew the look on my face very well; and would say, "do you want to sing?"
I love Sara Jordan Powell. I will never forget seeing her live. She was always awesome. Upper range was always so clean. Ministry is penetrating. Thank you for posting.
It was a unique experience being a part of this project at such a young age. After the recording, Carl Preacher said he left something on the piano and asked me to get it for him. I retrieved it and the guard would not let me out. I was almost in tears when I saw Milton Biggham, producer, Carl and Sara falling out laughing on the other side of the gate.
They were laughing because I got "punk'd." I was in the same age group as the inmates and the guard thought I was one of them trying to escape. Despite all of my efforts to explain that I was part of the recording, the guards would not believe me and would not let me out. It wasn't until I saw them laughing, and the guard bust out in laughter, that I discovered it was all a prank. Later, I had to laugh because it was the perfect set up.
Sara did it again with this Hit! Lord knows I really Loved her rendition of this Hymn. I used to request this song all of the time on the Radio Station her in San Antonio, Texas The Radio Angle was "Mozelle Wilson" of the Golden Gospel Train 1480 AM! That's when all of the Black Gospel Community Stood together and supported each other! How I wish to see this experience and re-live it again!
And for the record, the note she hits @ 3:49 is a high D. Had she not been a gospel singer, she would have surely been one of the great Black sopranos on the opera stage!
Sarah is my favorite soprano. She is an anointed singer who is humble and so giving. Reverend James Cleveland introduced her to GMWA around 1974 when she sung For God So Loved the World she as awesome.
There is a pastor on the south side of chicago, she retired now but boy i tell ya, her name is Pastor Carolyn Fair of Gospel Mission on south pulaski when she sings this here song..man the roof just flies off wherever she at..real talk!
I must tell Jesus all of my problems, I cannot bear these burdens alone, in my distress, He kindly will help me, He ever loves and cares for His own.
