you are always so awesome! i really love your vids!
always when i stop playing as much as i should i always come to your youtube channel, if i'm feeling that i'm bad at playing and just being low in mood.. it always helps to put on a cup of coffee and watch your vids! AWESOME I SAY!
The succes and emotional impact of music has bever been about its complexity, but rather its composition.............composition is key, and further, how it appeals to YOU...........dont hate, just do what you like, listen to what you like and PLAY what speaks to your soul!!!

BTW ANYONE READING THIS: If you dig speed metal do yourself a favor and check out an 80s band called Helstar, especially the albums "A Distant Thunder" and more especially, "Nosferatu." Their music has a nice neoclassical touch (more so with "Nosferatu") and are actually somewhat power metal-ish because of the vocals, but still AMAZING nonetheless.
Metalheads are essentially nerds. Anyone who's way into a certain style could be considered a nerd. It's just not generally considered uncool to be into music, like it is for other things like videogames or anime.
One Dislike... Mmmmm, I guess one person would rather listen to Justin Bieber licking Lady GaGa's fake boob, (because she is really a Man), while playing the latest Cold-Gay album. Sad, very sad...
slayer, Exodus, anthrax, old metallica, megadeth, Annihilator, andrew this is one of my favorite forms of music. megadeth is the best out of this genre (guitar and music wise) and the annhilator. trust me, you havent seen speed metal until you have hear some annhilator and megadeth. albums oyu have to hear: alice in hell never never land set the world on fire (megadeth) Killing is my business peace sells SFSGSW rust in peace countdown to extinction Slayer HELL AWAITS reiGhn in blood
Damn Andrew, you should seriously consider starting your own speed/power metal band, cause this is absolutely wicked \m/ Its a fantastic lesson as well, it definitely clarified things for me. Are you using the Valveking for this?
@TheAllSeeingToe Yeah, because playing power chords really fast and soloing with pentatonics are SO hard. Please Andrew, no thrash. School us in more jazz and classical styles. Thank you for your videos.
@clwnz777 Just because some styles are less complicated in theory doesn't mean it's worse. At the end of the day it's about the music and what message it's trying to get across. There're some styles of music I don't like myself but it doesn't mean I have to discriminate people who like them. Just because the blues uses mainly pentatonic and blues scale doesn't make it less popular.
Music doesn't always have to be really complex to sound good. It's usually what's simple that gets to people.
@clwnz777 That's a pretty closed minded view. You can play power chords and solo pentatonic in quite a few styles and get away with it, this is however called creative guitar studio, so one would assume Andrew could delve a little deeper into the subject and come up with some modal theory to add spice to metal lead playing. If you seriously think Metal is all about fast powerchords and pentatonics, you haven't been listening hard enough dude. Play nice now....
@bomdelux I only meant thrash metal. There's nothing "technical" or of worth in the playing. I listen to many genres of metal... and I have to say thrash is the most terrible one, guitar-theory-wise. Doesn't take much at all to write or play.
@clwnz777 Once again dude, it is a broad statement. In any genre, there are plenty of examples of simple songs. Megadeth have wrote some really pretty intricate songs that quite interesting theory wise. Check any guitar work by Marty Friedman and say that there is nothing worth listening to/playing.
Would be good to make examples with speed metal with songs from old blind guardian/lucifer's heritage and other speed metal bands. Mainly what the guy wanted to know was about Thrash/speed. Speed metal is definetely my favorite metal genre.
Nice one andrew! Could you extrapolate on this hard style? Like what type of strings to use and picks to use? I'm having trouble with accuracy on it like I'll get most of the notes but I always miss one or two, i have trouble gettin it down on the 8track.
@COOLBIAN57 accuracy has nothing to do with a string gauge or picks. it has to do with technique but alot of people that play this style will play jazz III picks.
I usually use a Jazz iii like mentioned earlier or one of these purple sharps, the green smooths are good if you have a little less distortion but the Jazz iii sharps are the best if you have a lot of distortion so you can hear each note clearly.
@COOLBIAN57 It's not particularly hard. it's just fast, it's all open string and power chords and single notes. The distortion helps to cover up a lot of mistakes. Use light strings 9s for easy playability and try a slightly thicker plectrum than what you're used to and just move up in the gauges of plectrum over a few weeks / months once you get used to the thicker plectrum till you find the right one.
It's always cool to see you play and teach metal stuff Andrew, love all of your lessons! : )

Good thing about Metal is the riffs repeat a lot so if you learn a few riffs and get their speed right you pretty much know the whole song.
The solos are the real challange though!
