I don't see why people say she was screwed. Fumie landed 5 triples, Sasha landed 6. I personally felt 5th place was appropriate. Fumie's 'Moonlight Sonata' program was better than Sasha's 'Carmen' IMO, but Sasha skated very well after the fall. It was a slightly close call, but I would give Sasha the nod, and in no way was Fumie screwed here. Don't get me wrong - I love this program.
@USAGymnast Cohen deserved third in the short. Hughes deserved fourth. Sebestyn and Butryskaya didnt have the same quality of spins, choreography as Hughes. Butryksaya also cheated her jumps too.
I agree with the top 3, 4-7 where I cant quite decide. I think maybe 4. Cohen 5. Hughes 6. Sebestyen & 7. Butyrskaya. Maria just skated so stiffly in her later years and didnt have the polish she once did.
Suguri has always been a skater who goes for it all in the LP, especially in 2006. You could just see it and feel how much she wanted it. I think this was one of the best artistic programs that night in 2002. Suguri and Robinson of Canada.
she should have been silver at least in 2006 along with Shuzuka...she's consistently a high jumper and amazing speed...she's the dark horse in 2010 Olympics and i won't mind her getting gold.
I like her, too, but I am nervous... She needs to really get back in shape, just to make it to the Olympics next year. Let's see if Morozov can work miracles for her.
She earned medals here and in Torino with those mistakes SASHA AND SLUT-skaya had... I donn't understand the judging , but then again 2002 was HELL JUDGING!
beautiful. fumie at her best. can she get ever get back to this form? hard to believe she is still going to be skating in the upcoming 2009 ISU Grand Prix season.....
Only because the judges had to leave scoring room for the 9 skaters following her. The judges basically have to give skaters in this group (2nd of 3) a score that ranks them with the other skaters...so a good skater who skates early (like Fumie) might normally get a 5.7 or 5.8 if she skated in the last group, but here, she got a score that put her on top of the others.
I wish she'd get this level of performance back... She could go for an Olympic medal in 2010 if she could just get some of the "passion" back...
I don't really like the avant garde programs she has been going for lately, particularly because she has moved us so much with programs like this one, Ave Maria, the Planets, and the program that won the 2003 GPF...

that was excellent! I haven't recently seen her skate quite so well and I'm not a fan of her long program this season but i wish her the best.

Out of curiousity, how would you have the top 7 marked/placed after SP?

She skated much better then the mark she got. She shouldhave been in 4th lowest and 3 highest.

A very nice and beautiful performance!!!
I think the judges did not judge good enough, her performance in the LP was better than the marks she got at the end.
