i have an 87 that i just bought, and some times it idles too high around 1500 rpm...it is all stock except cold air intake, but when i rev to about 4000rpm, it will idle back down to around 800, we think there might be a leak in the gasket from the cold air intake to the throttle body...but we dont know?....do u think you the problem?
@ROBBY639 Sounds like a vacuum leak to me. Get a can of carb cleaner, and start spraying places it might leak. the motor will idle different when it sucks in the carb cleaner. just stay clear of the headers :) (you can also use water)
@TheAbear360 ....it is the idle control valve....i havent fixed it because i got another mustang, and will most likely sell the 87 when i get a new idle control valve...thank for the info though, if i would never found out what it was i would if tryed what you said...
i have an 87 T-Bird 5.0 and i replaced my fuel pump because its was going bad, and i had problems getting fuel around left turns. thinking that it was the fuel pump, of course it did not fix the problem. any ideas?
@Wahwahweesnaw could be the entire unit inside the tank is loose, and moving around on turns. but there are a lot of cars out there not designed to take corners quick, so the fuel sloshes around a lot. where as mustangs and such are designed so the pump always has fuel, even on tight corners.
me and my stepdad are working on a 90 lx hatchback it was a v4 now we put a 302 with a B&M supercharger and we have a dash from his old stang that he totaled and i need help finding a v8 wiring harness for the car
What radiator do you have in your car? i was having overheating problems on my 92 lx and finally, it just shit out. should i shell out the money for a 2 core, or just get a cheap replacement? keep in mind, my car has similar mods as yours.
@AirsoftGamer12 my car has the same radiator as when I bought it. But it is not OEM, but I believe its just a OEM replacement. It is very tiny, haha.
I would say upgrade to a 2 core aluminum, its worth the extra cooling. My car has started to run a bit hot on warm days. so I have considered replacing mine, but I belive my issue is my water pump.
@AirsoftGamer12 Mark VIII's have really thin radiators but a kick ass electric fan. My 96 Mark weighs 3900 with me in it and I'm pretty hard on it at times-for extended periods manually holding 1st and 2nd and it barely climbs above half way for temp. Get rid of the clutch fan (if you haven't already) , find one of these Mark VIII fans and run a relay to it. Upgrade alternator if it's an early Fox. Two-speed (hi/lo) fan so search for wiring. Put a thermostat to it. Run 2-4 core rad. Free HP
i know it waznt the tranny,i had it rebuilt for towing, and i actully took it to the shop tht built it ,and the pulled it out and said it waz fine,so its gotta be in the motor, the oil looks ok in it still after all this time, did a compression check and the hole driver side is veary low,i just want a beast when im done with it ,tht will smoke a vett,or mybe even a viper ,oh and id like to change it to a stick,my buddy got a complete lighting motor he said he would sell cheap to me
hey i have a 92 explorer ,with the 5.0 im it,well 13 years ago i let my (friend) use it and he pulled a big camper with it,for 4 months, well when i got it back ,it waz not running right, just a loss of power and no torq, feels like a 4 banger now,any way,its been sitting on a cement pad on blocks for the last 13 years, under a carport like cover,so the baody is super clean and so is the inteier, its in prefect shape, can i make it a bad ass lil motor, wht can i do to it,oh i want it to be a sleeper
BADASS...Awesome Engine work . Hey uuhh.. I have a question Do you have any experience with 4.10's? I have an 89 hatch t-5 with 2.73's "I think"and I'm kinda leaning towards 4.10's instead 3.73's. My car is daily driven but barely no highway miles. Gas is no issue. Which would you reccomend 4.10's or 3.73's my car has the typical bolt ons here and there and just want something that would really wake it up you know. Any suggestions I would be greatly thankful.
@futurepornstar100 thanks for the compliment man! I have 4.10's for my car. When I first bought my car, it has a automatic, and 2.73's. it shifted out of first gear at 55mph-60mph. it was a pig! I raced a beat up truck once from a light, and he beat me up to about 30mph, then I finally hit the midrange, and pulled him.
I got 4.10's after 2 weeks of owning the car. GIGANTIC difference. one of the best mods you can do. It then shifted out of frirst around 30-35mph I believe.
@futurepornstar100 My highway mileage went down a little, I think by 1-2mpg, but my city mileage WENT UP. I tested this out because I had two different routes I could go to work, one mostly highway, and the other regular city streets. my city mileage went up by 1-2.
@mason3571000 depends on where the car makes power. my car peaks at 5700, so my shift light is set at that, so I shift by 6000, dropping my powerband in the next gear right to where my peak torque is. so it make the car pull harder then if I shifted right at my peak horse power.
@telorvehc0chevrolet well If I wanted to hear it I could fire it up right now. lol.
the motor I rebuilt is a spare I bought. the motor in the mustang hasn't been touched yet. But today I will be pulling the transmission and such.
It should be back on the road with the new motor by the end of the month. then I will ether sell the hurt motor, or keep it for a souvenir of the first motor I tore up with this car, lol
@telorvehc0chevrolet thats how I like to pull the motor out. disconnecting and getting the transmission out of the way first.
you can pull the transmission attached to the motor, but I don't have much room in my garage, Its not really long enough to back the engine puller up that far.
so its easier/simpler for me to just pull the transmission, move it out of the way, and then pull the motor.
if people are to stupid to tell the difference between my mustang, and its motor, and a 2011 mustang and motor then they need there head checked. not my issue.
the reason its called 2011 is because I see that as this years projects/season of racing. 2011 will be a big year for this car, lots of racing, and lots of nitrous. I hope to get the car into a 10 second 1/4 mile.
@Xarmy187 Fine, How is 2011 season motor build, I don't care about the 2011 part, Just the fact that you are not rebuilding any of the body or interior, This is only a motor rebuild
@gpfordstang302 well I think its more about AGE at this point. mustang motors are just plain getting old. more miles, more abuse. I bought one 88 mustang motor, that turned out to have all the bearings chewed up, so I sold it. went and looked at another from a 90 mustang, and it was all wore out too.
explorer motors are less likely to be beat on too, because there out of trucks, not "hot rods". so they just tend to be in better shape. this motor in the videos bearings where like new!
@Xarmy187 ohh haha I feel ya man...yea I know wat you mean, finding a 5.0 H.O. mustang motor in good shape that someone is willing to sell for anything less than arms and legs is probably pretty freakin hard lol
@gpfordstang302 explorer motors also have different pistons which bump compression just a bit, but a huge down fall is the pistons are not forged like most mustang motors up to 1992, so you have to be very careful with power adders. I will still be running a 150-200 shot of nitrous on this new motor :)
so when people say..."built bottom end" that means that the bottom end of the motor is built?
sergsrt8 1 week ago
@sergsrt8 they normally mean forged pistons, strong rods, and such. "built" means built to handle power normally.

theferrisjuggalo 10 months ago
@theferrisjuggalo wouldn't be hard at all to build the motor, but it sounds like ether the transmission is burnt up, or maybe you have a bent valve.
since it was hurt during towing, I would say its the transmission
for that truck, I would go with a vortech supercharger. could hit 450rwhp pretty easy with about 15psi, haha
Xarmy187 10 months ago
@theferrisjuggalo u could also maybe put a 460 in it

so from 87 till 92 the bottmend are forged
mason3571000 1 year ago
@mason3571000 well from 1986 to 1992 they had forged pistons. pretty sure the older mustang, 1979 to 86 might have been forged too
