Just a clever metaphor really.. the bees are being used by the "machine," or simply a higher power/authority to carry out tasks for the benefit of the higher authority, and at the bee's expense. One could possibly make the connection to the government being the "machine" but that's really up for interpretation.

I usually DO find Christian music off-putting. And originally Menomena was a Christian rock group, but they ditched the label because they said it put them under too much pressure. Personally, I don't think there are really that many religious references, and they certainly don't detract from the music. Friend and Foe is a fantastic, perfect album.
