>I cried like a baby to this last night at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester - amazing performance!!
I too was at the Feb 11, 2011 concert in Manchester, England. I am from the U.S., and was deeply moved by both Nobuyuki Tsujii's performance (flawless and devastatingly beautiful) and the British audience's warm reception of him - Bravo to everyone! Please visit the "nobufans" site for an eyewitness account.
@castout888 I am really disppointed with Maestro Conlon here...he seems to have his own agenda at play and his players are winsome to even dare to get back on track. I hope he has better days in the opera house.
Yes, but in keeping with typical Japanese courtesy, the phrase should be "domo arigato gozaimasu!", and -- I got to utter that very phrase to Mr. Tsujii himself backstage after his performance of this very concerto on Feb. 11, 2011, in Manchester, England. I had the thrill of my life!
Though he has a firm touch and strong hands, he can't produce as much volume as he should because he can't strike the keys from high up as other professionals do, because it would be too difficult for him to do so accurately. Nor are his staccatos as crisp as others' because he can't dart around with his hands like a sighted pianist might. The overall effect is that his performance is somewhat muted and overly controlled. I wish there could be a wider range of dynamics and textures.
@lister1nePaz Others have expressed this same opinion, but if you were at Tsujii's performance in the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, England, Feb. 11, 2011, you would have witnessed an electrifying performance. For many, technicalities are not as important as the overall impact of a performance - the head versus the heart. Nobuyuki will be touring in March in Japan performing this and the Tchaikovsky 1 in 10 concerts.
Nobuyuki Tsujii will perform Rachmaninoff Concerto Number 2 in Japan, England, and Canada in March-April 2011. Google "nobufans" for a site that has a full list of his concerts scheduled for 2011.
@spiritualhealingct It is stubborn elitism like yours that is causing classical music to die, because it is hard enough for the general masses to appreciate this music without ignorant snobs like yourself to complain about every performer not meeting the standards of the "greats" from fifty years ago. What's the point of music if you're just going to use it as a mechanism for uplifting your own meaningless pedestal above others?
This has to be the most BORING performance I have ever heard. If I had 30 breaths of life left and knew nothing of computer programming, I could design a program that was 10x as expressive as this. I have tears in my eyes about how insensitive we have all become that this type of automatic and heartless playing is actually looked at as inspirational. How sad!
I can't imagine what one of the great expressive pianists from the mid-century would think about this performance...so sad!
@spiritualhealingct Annnnnd YOU sir, is what is wrong with classical music and its listeners today. No, he is not Rubenstein, no, he is not Horovitz. He is Nobuyuki Tsujii, a blind Japanese pianist who fell in love with the piano when he could barely walk and made that his entire life. Perhaps you don't find his performance very riveting, but I, along with plenty of other viewers have evidently found this performance to be absolutely captivating.
@spiritualhealingct The point of it all is that at least for myself and plenty others, his performance of this piece hit that spot emotionally where feelings are experienced that are beyond our immediate understanding. For you to arrogantly bombast about how boring you found it and thought it was the most expressionless performance ever is a flat out insult to everyone who legitimately connected with this performance.
I'm sorry that your deadened and desensitized stone cold heart cannot begin to feel. I can't imagine what your parents did to you to have you so emotionally cut off and so rudely judge my beautiful critique. It is people like you who have no ability to feel, are extremely irresponsible, and react with such ignorance instead of observing that are putting a quick end to this world. Try taking some responsibility for your own experiences and stop projecting your unconsciousness.
@spiritualhealingct I'm going to have to disagree with your critique as it wasn't an unbiased critique, but a very biased opinion. Constructive criticism is one thing and an opinion is another. By putting your opinion here, expect yourself to defend your opinion. Attacks to users don't strengthen your opinion nor is your criticism a well thought out one.

第一楽章の出だしもそうでしたが、やはり第三楽章でも4:28と4:41のところで不自然にオケのテンポが早くなっている気がします。それでもまったく霞まない辻井さんの演奏力は感嘆に値します。

Flawless and inspired performance. Too bad the accompaniment is not controlled better by the conductor. Drowns out the piano in spots and shouldn't.
