  • If they made the rails continuously welded, and put in concrete ties, then (hypothetically) trains could go up to speeds of 80-100 mph in some spots. on cape cod

  • 0:20 hahaha! just look at them biting there nails! XD

  • four years ago the tracks by ottis air base had to close because of poor maintenance. but it re-opened when mass coastal came in the picture

  • @chessie6575 It wasn't Bay Colony's job to maintain a long industrial spur for free.

  • Women engineers?!?!?!? What will they think of next????

  • what station is that

  • Is there anyway to get permission to walk them? I'm planning to do a documentary.

  • @metalbynumber Dunno - call 'em. WIth all the frivolous lawsuits these days (e.g. suing McDonalds because you dumped hot coffee in your lap), the railroads take trespassing very seriously. Any number of people have had accidents walking on railroad rights-of-way, and have sued the railroads...and often won, even though they had no business being there. MBTA will probably say no flat out (but you never know), while Mass Coastal *might* grant you permission if escorted.

  • @CapeTrains I would love to be escorted! We've been lookin for some people to interview. Thanks for the info!

  • I'm planning on walking the tracks from Middleboro to The Cape. My friend and I walked 6 miles on the tracks and ended up at the middleboro station. Epic adventure!

  • @metalbynumber You might not want to do that - the section from Rochester to the Cape is regularly plied by the Energy Train, at odd times. And both MBTA and Mass Coastal (rightfully) take trespassing very seriously. I'm just sayin'...

  • i'd move to the cape if the commuter rail went down there.

  • To see some beautifully-maintained stock and a nice clean ROW, search on "trains Japan".

  • I certaintly hope that track maintenace is much better nowadays...it almost makes it look like an abandoned railroad!

  • do they still have passenger trains running up to cape cod?

  • @darthfurious80 There's been talk - and recently some activity - towards providing commuter service from Middleborough to Sandwich, but it hasn't materialized yet. The "Cape Codder" hasn't run since '96...and is sorely missed.

  • Why does the MBTA loco have grills over the windshield ?

  • @ccolimon Because the tracks run through some pretty tough neighborhoods in the Boston area and kids occasionally throw rocks at the trains.

  • @Superedit That's true, but trains in Chicago and NYC run through worse neighborhoods and have no grills.

  • @Superedit They should make a rule/law that if train engineers catch kids throughing rocks they should through rocks back at the kids...maybe one or two rail spikes?

  • Rare F10's in the GN paint scheme. Only a few of those were made. Nice catch on those super rare units.

  • I prefer the F10 engines, they look amazing, the F series at that. And what wrong with the tracks? They look near abandoned, is the brush crew not a big deal for this line?

  • MTBA's not on home rails here - the train was on its way to a railfan event on the Cape. At the time this was taken, the Bay Colony railroad was in charge of track maintenance. As you can see, they did the minimum.

  • I once saw one of those F40PHs with Operation Lifesaver markings on it. But today I only see the newer F40PHs and the GP40-MCs

  • were you actually there?

  • Odd to see 1054 without ditch lights.

  • Wow, good eyes. Never noticed that. Shows you when this was recorded (1997 or so.)

  • Man MBTA runs on a P.O.S. line

  • Actually not - they were off home rail to visit Hyannis for a rail event. This line has seen much improvement in the last couple of years.

  • What MBTA line is West Barnstable on?

  • It's not...the train was down there for a railfan event.

  • @Kihoalufreak The whole Bay Colony Line merges together at the lift bridge in Buzzards Bay, then crosses to the mainland. The line is connected to the Middleboro/Lakeville line which goes to South Station in Boston. In the info, it says that this was shot in 1997. That was the first year that the MBTA had service on the Old colony lines. That is Middleboro/Lakeville, and Plymouth/Kingston. The Greenbush line is also part of the Old Colony RR

  • the mbta recently changed out those old switchers on the southern lines so now its done automatically.

  • Wow and talk about some neglected track! That's a disgrace for a main line!

  • Cutting it a bit close on the switch? Though obviously the Cape Codder had time to stop.

  • It's the great pumpkin Charlie Brown!

  • @jdgator95 Yes, we miss the Pumpkins. They're in Colorado now.

  • Nice video...tracks look like they could use some herbicide...

  • does the CCRR run on an old MBTA line?

  • No, CCRR when it was around, ran down at Cape Cod. MBTA never ran to Cape Cod although there was passenger service there.

  • Those F10s were leased to them by the MBTA. When CCRR went under, they returned to the MBTA.

  • ...for about five minutes. The "T" promptly unloaded them. One is in Colorado now, I think the other is still in Maryland with a blown traction motor.

  • Metro North has 2 of them

  • great northern???

  • The shop forces were partial to the GN scheme, so when it came time to paint these units, that's what they chose. There were also two Geeps that were painted in the "negative" of this scheme - solid green with an orange stripe.

  • What date was 1997?

  • July of 1997, if that's what you mean...

  • What year and date is this video?

  • 1997.

  • What date is this video?

  • Reminds one of the silver streak.

  • seven oclock train. time for pizza on the ramp

  • That train is rockin!

  • In Mass?

  • Does anyone know if these engines are still around? I have not seen these in years! If so, where can they be seen? Thanks!

  • The F40 in the opening shot is still around. The orange F10 cab units are long gone; they were returned to the MBTA after Cape Cod Railroad went out of business in 1998. One is now in Colorado, I think the other is still in Maryland. They are both now owned by RLCX. If you Google "F10" you may well find out more.

  • Many thanks, appreciate the information!

    Lyman

  • I might invent that service

  • What year did you take the video, i was surprised to see a kawasaki on the railroad

  • 1997, I think.

  • Umm... the kawasaki cars are still running. They have been on the south side of the Commuter Rail since.... pretty much since they were purchased.

They might go to the north side when the MBTA gets the new double decker cars (from Bombardier I think)

  • There should be Boston-Cape Cod service!

  • That would never happen so much work would need to be done.

  • Not really.

I'm sure amtrak can take you there.

If the commuter rail want to cape cod, it would be one hell of a trip. The commuter rail is well... mainly for commuters. I highly doubt that someone would ride the train hours and hours to commute back and forth from the cape.

  • Ironically the State rebuilt most of the trackage between Middleboro and the Cape (welded rail) to make such service possible. Hasn't happened yet, but perhaps the new operators of the line will get something going.

  • SO who's station is this? It has a mini high - why would CCCR build a mini high.....

  • West Barnstable, MA. The high platform was there for Amtrak service (Amtrak ended that service in the late 90's.)

  • ok, makes sense - thanks.

  • ok, is it me, or is the guy still wrestling with the switch throw 20 seconds before the CCRR train hits it? :)

  • Telephoto lens -- he was actually farther away and moving very slowly.

  • That CCRR locomotive color scheme looks like the old Great Northern livery.

  • Nice stuff as usual!

  • were is this.

  • West Barnstable, Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

  • Very nice. I like the GN paint-style of the F-Unit.

  • I wonder the next time you'll ever see a MBTA Engine, none the less a Double Decker Cab Car on the cape

  • Well, we did see the MBTA geometry train there last fall, but of course the video camera was miles away. 1996 - 1997 was the magic time, with F10s, Geeps, and these special consists.

  • Wow A F-unit !:P

  • I Love The Back car of the MBTA

  • Yes they have. When was this taken, about 19 years ago?

  • No, 1997, actually

  • Tommy & Debbie get off the engine!!!

  • Friends of yours? Have they seen this?

  • The train that the drivers came out (MBTA?) had a headlight on in the rear.

  • Yes, it's a push-pull train. The rear-most car is a control car for the northbound move.

  • Awsome! Nice video!

  • Thanks very much!
