My mother used to sing the first verse of this song a lot when I was a child. I didn't get all the implications back then. I almost forgot it completely until I was reminded of it recently. The internet proves itself good for something occasionally, LOL...
The original lyrics were "Sweet violets, sweeter than the roses, covered all over from head to toe, covered all over with shit." Everyone knew the original lyrics, so this version of the song built on skipped words was a hit. Recorded originally by Dinah Shore. Dorothy Collins could sing, and did sing, anything.
hotanlovinit---This makes my day. What a great singer. The sweetheaert of Your Hit Parade. A great show.Miss .Collins did it all-Great memories_She was a fantastic singer. We saw her the year of 57 in Las Vegas. She was the greatest-She returned to Your Hit Parade in 58=59 on CBS network. She starred in Follies on Broadway in the early 70's.Her rendition of Losing My Mind has never been surpassed. She sure was a great singer She did it all..She sang Jazz too.I wished she had done more of jazz.

It's hard to believe (when compared to now) that TV and music could be so consistently good!
Thanks for "water in the desert" and happy holidays!
