Wow! That sounds awesome! I wish the Class 35 Hymeks had EMD power units instead of Maybach as then they would have had a longer service life well into the late 1990's if not the mid-2000's. Although they would be interesting to see them in the Inter-City Executive livery in the 1980's if they made that period and Virgin Trains livery as when BR was privatised in 1995. Virgin Trains ran the Cross-Country services in the UK and I think the Class 35's would have worked that if they had EMD units.
@formidable38: To be honest mate, I didn't realise just how reliable and versatile the EMD power units were and at first I didn't like them because of the "ying" noise when idle and they don't have the carisma of the Machbach or the English Electric nor the Sulzers that do. But they have far more positives than negatives as they are easy to maintain, VERY reliable and they seem to fit almost any locomotive. I think if the Class 60's had the EMD 645 units, near all of them would be.
@formidable38:..in service on most of the freight workings as the original Mirrlees Blackstone units are showing their age and they tend to have "GE fever" as they tend to fail in the same way that the GE FDL V16's do and I think some railway fans call them "toasters" because of this. I wish EMD supplied the 567 turbo unit to the company that made the Class 35 Hymek as they would have easily lasted well into the late 1990's if not the early 2000's. I do like EMD locomotives as well.
@EWS60008 Well, i got 'converted' a couple of years ago mate. On the earlier EMD loco's like the SD40-2's and SD45's etc they didnt use silencers and they really do sound great. Talking of reliability, you gota wonder how these things coped in desert heat, long tunnels and steep grades at 15 or 20 mph on full bore for hours at a time
They never cease to amaze me in their bomb proof reliability. Its a shame they didnt re engineer the 60's with a V16 645 aka 59 but that will never happen
Yeah man, I work for EMD. I work on the engine line. By the way that was the best YT clip I've seen. I love the sound of a blower engine. Plus with a turbo engine that was great. I hear turbo engines all the time in our test cells so it's nice to hear something different. I forwarded this clip to many of my co-workers keep up the good work.
Iv read in the manuals that you should never go above notch 5 or 6 when running the prime mover unloaded but I think that's just when the generator field switch is open so weather or not they are following EMD's word I have no clue so Im not really worried about it. I'll worry more about the equipment on my road.
Hey thats a corp Central Oregon Railroad and Pacific Locomotive. At least the green one anyways. way cool haven't seen those in a bunch of years. CORP used to have some high nose ex NS GP40-2s. Now Corp doesn't even have any more GP38's. They got rid of them for these new genset type locos. totally bumbed about that but I guess I'll have to get used to it. After all beggars cant be chossers haw haw.
@StarWarsTrains Yes, the GP38 series used two radiator fans (like the red engine in the video) The GP40 has three, helping distinct it from other similar EMD locomotives.
@SkyhawkACE123 Ah! Okay! The radiator fans are often hard to notice! I figured the GP40 had more radiator fans! I just couldn't tell! Thanks for the info! I think I'll add it to my Locomotive Wiki site!
@6V92TA Nah... they were definitely giving it all they've got. You can hear the gp38's roots blower distinctly "moaning", and the gp40 was definitely firing at 900 RPM.
@SkyhawkACE123 I hate to be a know at all. The green one is actually a GP40-2 because it has 3 fan duct on the rear roof of the loco and the red and gray loco is right, GP38-2, the non-dynamic brake version. Classic sound. I LOVE EMD!!!
@NYCTAFreak500 There are multiple variations of the 40 model. In 4 axle locomotives the list seems endless, GP40, GP40-2, GP40X, GP40P-2, GP40-3, ect. This is a GP40. The other is a GP38-2 yes, but it is not as powerful as a GP40, so it doesnt need as big or much of radiators and radiator fans. This is a GP40. haha
Neat! sounds great! Ugh! I see that MT lots of numbers foamer is commenting about "how bad GE is" what an idiot. Anyways that was in in Lima, Ohio not that long ago!
@metraF40PH163 Yeah man you nailed it!!! Lima Ohio! I took a weekend railfanning trip there for my birthday. I didnt get as many videos as I hoped. I did well over 600 pictures though lol
Wow, that was epic! You are so lucky! Listen to that turbo and that roots blower working together. I need to ask the engineers at Taft to do that more often. xD

SkyhawkACE123 7 months ago
@SkyhawkACE123 Well, hmm...the trucks or bogies look like GP38-2 trucks, though! =\

@StarWarsTrains They use the same kind. Notice thebig sound difference. The GP40is turbocharged so it sounds more badass lol
SkyhawkACE123 7 months ago
@SkyhawkACE123 Well, aside from that, one way to tell the difference between a GP40 from a GP38-2 is by the front radiator, aside from the frame!
