I'm no master of the glide, but I think if you can get your hips ahead of your upperbody once you land in the power position and turn to deliver, you are going to make a big jump up. Just out of curiosity how do you like throwing at Keene? I'm going to UMaine this fall so maybe we'll run into each other along the way.
Thanks for the advice! My upper body has a habbit of turning way before my hips, but hopefully I can fix that this season, I'm really hoping to get past the 14m mark... Keene is great! Coach Wilson is the best I could ask for and there aren't too many throwers on the team but we're all very driven and dedicated. Will you be at UMaine Orono? If so there's a chance I'll be at open New Englands for weight throw but it depends on how well I do. Good luck this year!
Yeah I'm at UMaine Orono. I'm hopefully gonna qualify but we'll see how quickly I can pick up the weight and subsequently hammer throw. We'll see how it goes. I hope you meet your goals. I think that upperbody thing will get you past that 14m mark. It is suprising what getting the extra pull on the implement will do. it made a huuuuuge difference in my throws with the 2k discus. I could get away with not using the hips with the 1.6k but not so with the 2k and same with the shot put.
Good advice... I haven't lifted at all since high school and need to get on a good routine and get motivated. My legs are fairly strong but my upper body is pretty lacking, so there's a lot of room for improvement for me in shot and disc. I hope UMaine has a good coach, you'll need it for hammer and weight ;-) Good luck with both! When does your training start?
From talking with the coach and looking at his profile on the UMaine Athletics page, he seems to know his stuff. He has coached some really good hammer throwers at other schools and apparently coached two olympic shot putters as well as an olympic javelin thrower. I'll have to ask him who they were. I move in tomorrow and we start some unofficial practices in mid september and I'm not sure when we officially start practicing. I've been lifting since the beginning of the summer.
I have been doing some turns in my garage so that I don't have to start completely from scratch. I'm just doing like one turn at a time, pausing then doing another etc, etc. I can't wait to throw both implements. Ever since I saw a video on youtube of the hammer throw, I've known it was something I wanted to try.
Sorry I never responded to this! Yeah, hammer is great. I just took a look at some of your videos, you look like you're getting the hang of it so far. 46 meters is great for a freshman, so congrats! Looks like you've got more though. And I'm digging your discus technique, it's exactly where I want to be! Too bad I'm still trying to fix the rotary habit from high school. In any case, I hope you're having a good season thus far... have you hit any qualifiers? Good luck the rest of the way.
Thanks. Yeah I know i definitely have 50m in me in the hammer, I've yet to put together a decent technical throw in a meet so far. My discus technique is pretty good but still needs a lot of work. It's coming along though back to where I was in high school in terms of technical proficiency. I'm going to conferences but that isn't really standardized, just top 25 athletes allowed in each event. If I can put a good hammer throw together and get 50m, that will qualify me for Junior Nats.
Try spinning.......porkchop!

@4inches4u The spin is a long term commitment and considering how little attention I pay to shot, there would be no reason to switch.
