  • I've heard about this for many years...& finally getting to see/hear his performance with The Who, is a real treat!!

    Hats off...to Scot Halpin !!!

What an extremely rare opportunity...& he pulled it off...great!!!

What a historic event. Moon was busy...overdosing on a handful of strong tranquilizers. Hence, giving a Who fan...& drummer - the opportunity of a lifetime!!!

Very cool. RIP, Scot Halpin. It's sad you had to die, friend!!

    Dave ~ DJ

    Drummer

  • Cool moment at :32 where Townshend gives Halpin a signal to ease back during the verse.

  • bas quality X.X but great perfonmance

  • We all as fans at one point in our teenage years can only dream about what this guy got to do.He was a concert saving hero that night .

  • i felt that windmill from her!

  • You know, they gave Scot a "The Who" jacket after that show.

    Then somebody stole it.

  • Scot was a winner that night. Took alot I would think to go up on stage and Play with an Icon band, never sitting in with then once before in his lifetime. Kudos to him, and the band for holding it together that night. Amazing video.

  • R.I.P Scot Halpin 1954-2008

  • Just came back from the Daltry concert in San Jose. Class act

  • great song

  • Scott showed so much character by having the guts to come out of a crowd and step up with The Who, and then made it work. I've seen so many great concerts and I am so impressed by Scott. He is in the real rock and roll hall of fame- the big one.

  • having pete windmilling while trying to play drums must have been hard for him

  • Scott Halpin from the Quad Cities (Muscatine IA) died in 2008 at the age 54 of a non operable brain tumor...RIP

  • imagine being able to tell your kids you played drums for the who. that'd be such a cool dad. my dad's coolest story is meeting tom leslie. yeah i dont know who that is either...

  • @funnyhead222 My dad got in a fist fight with Keith Richards. Not QUITE as cool as this, but still cool nonetheless.

  • The Who.... a band that should have ALWAYS toured with a back up drummer. Ha Ha....

  • Great performance by Scott Halpin

His drums off course come nowhere to Keith his drums, but that's not important

He did what he had to do and saved the concert

So jealous, wish I could get an opportunity like that

I wish I only could know how Keith Moon's kit feels

  • My daughter went to school with Scott's son James. They were good friends in elementary school. Scott was a nice guy. He did in 2008 from a brain tumor.

  • @LIESSSS!!!! ALL LIESSSSS!!!!!

  • Isn't it the legend that Moon got the Who job by doing the same thing? That he jumped up and said he could do better than their original drummer during a show--and DID IT!? I've heard that many times. Turn-about is fair play?

  • @alphabetgreen1996 @TrueGamerX Moon did have a snare drum but he didn't use a hi-hat. I just used ride cymbals which is what gives his playing that "wall of sound" effect. That plus his incredible fills and unorthodox technique. Best rock drummer ever in my opinion. Perhaps not technically the best, but in terms of sheer adrenalin, he can't be beaten.

  • @BleekerSoL er, I meant to say "He used ride cymbals" haha.

  • r.i.p. scott you lucky guy!!!!

  • i saw hole once and they asked a girl on stage from the crowd i don t like hole that much.. the girl started smell like teen and was kicked out

  • I'm probably most impressed with his ability to play so consistently on someone else's kit. Set up for someone else. There are so many little nuances and positions you get used to with your equipment in the formation you want it. To just sit down at someone else's kit and play a concert? You never even saw Keith Moon himself doin' that.

  • Keith had taken Elephant Tranquilizers and passed out! Thank God he didn't die this night! Apparently His Guardian Angel turned er back for one moment, and BANG! Passed Away! She musta thought,"Oy,Veh! The Boss ain't gonna be pleased with me!"

  • Really incredible...considering. My "friend" who used to "date" Keith Moon had a lot to say about this night. She might if I can get her to use "one of these computer things..." it's amazing how hot groupie girls from then are now old ladies. Time SUCKS!

  • The naked eye? Ouch! Since the naked eye didn't get realeased on an album till 74 (the who played it live since 70) it's a good bet Halpin had never heard the song before. Which I think is a credit to his skill. I heard something about that was the first he'd picked-up sticks in over a year.

  • improvisation to the maxxx

  • And to play with Entwistle!

  • Man, that was so awesome. Can you imagine the notariety? And the Cow Palace, no less. He got a Who concert jacket, for his drumming, which was stolen that night.

  • You have to understand. Scot Halpin was substituted to play on a Keith Moon drum set up which consisted of only toms, two bass drums and crashes. This goes to show how incredibly unique, natural, and original Keith was.

  • @TrueGamerX I'm not sure that's accurate. I can't see any drummer playing without a snare drum. In the video before this (Smokestack Lightning), Scott Halpin uses the snare as his "timekeeper" (which is quite unusual, as the only song that I can think of that does that is "I am the Resurrection" by the Stone Roses).

  • @alphabetgreen1996 For some reason I meant to say snare drum /facepalm. You can obviously see the snare drum in the video, don't know why I forgot that.

  • I think Scot made for a good "Substitute" LOL I'm hilarious

  • i would be so scared to mess up D:...he was one lucky kid back then!

  • OMG!!!

  • They should've gotten this guy to play with them permanently when Moon died in 78.

  • Scott did an incredible job and I agree he should be in the Hall of Fame for that. It reminds me of when I saw the Who in 1979

  • R.I.P. SCOTT WELL DONE ....ROCK N' ROLL HEAVEN ? YOU ARE THERE PAL.....

  • Amazing he was only 19 at the time.

  • ...And whilst I gaze upon things that make me weep for humanity, I turn my head to this, and hope cries out yet again...

  • awesome experience truly once in a lifetime wish i had the chance

  • This story would make a great movie

  • haha at :33 townsend is jsut like "stfu, alright, your not keith moon, stfu..."

  • @rcon1012 actually he's just telling him "not yet" cause he was getting a little ahead in the song

  • lucky son of a bitch.. got to play with the greatest live band in history

  • well done Scott!

  • respect to scott. i woulda passed out after shitting in my pants

  • SCOTT SHOULD BE IN THE HALL OF FAME PERIOD.

  • This is just one of Keith Moons many antics...A loose screw, but a loved one, to say the least, who on many occassions played out of his gord...But he still performed..sometimes even better...Just look at the Isle of Wight 1970 gig...Hes in overdrive.......Long Live The Who..........

  • This guy should have gotten a fuckin' MEDAL ... Jesus, hard-to-comprehend what the feeling was, but lucky Scott huh? And playing an UN-RELEASED song even ...

  • As I recall "The Naked Eye" had not been released on an album up to this point. The only way to have heard 'The Who" play it woudl be to attend a concert. I'm not sure if Halpin had never heard this song before. Ouch! What a tuff song with all the stops and crashes.

  • @mindeloman It was relased on the Who's Next CD as a bonus track.

  • @Garbagehead4 Exactly, that was in 2003? Naked eye was released on a real album in '74 on Odds and sods. So still, the dude did a great job for never hearing the song before.

  • People, drummers would pay good money just sit at Moon's kit? Then you're told to just go ahead and play. And then only to play with the entire band in front of thousands......for free. This openess with the audience is why The Who was such a great live band. Scott Halpin may be the only concert audience memeber to truely "join together with the band"

  • it sucks that the guitar sound is so low in this vid, but great performance

  • One of the most harrowing prospects ever......filling in for Keith live with The Who!

  • Hey Pete, I can play drums...okay Keith took a horse traqueilizer ..come up and kick ass on the Naked Eye...really.....

  • Woodstock´s version is more powerful

  • @fersuels89 Uh, the kid on drums was just a kid who came out of the audience to fill in for Keith Moon on a couple of songs. Townsend was having to direct him the whole time. Not too bad for no rehearsal for this kid. So yeah, woodstock would be more powerful but cut the kid some slack. He did awesome.

  • cracked!

  • He did a damned impressive job

  • I was at this show back then and i was probably as fukked up as mr moon , i think it was afghani primo hash , a flask of brandy and LSD , a delite-ful COMBINATION !!!

  • @yellowsno69

a brain tumor. it's a shame that he died so young

  • What did Scot die of?

  • @yellowsno69

he died of a brain tumor im pretty sure.

  • Nice to see you again Scoty.

Miss you down on ol'planet earth. May you paint, draw and play happily forever in the great beyond. Still recall some great barstool days in SF.

  • That's a lifetime lived in one night right there. Fucking amazing.

  • What a fucking rush that must of been.

  • not bad scot...

  • the who best band in the world for 45 years...who can argue

  • yeah, i was jamming with scott for the last couple of years of his life, he had also become an amazing bass player, he had gotten attacked by a bunch of sissies who as usual bring their sissy friends, so ten years later he got another head ache and died, leaving a wife and two children. he was an incredible friend, musician and is missed.

  • that was an awesome job by scot

  • Petes riffs are legendairy, when i heard this song

i just had to learn guitar man!

    Pete's God!

he created a totally different style from anyone else, could not achieve, or comprehend..

  • wow that must have been the highlight of his life coming out of the audience to play with the who. that must have been so cool/ scary haha

  • I love Pete Townshend, contrary to what people tells me... I think he was soooo cute!

  • Ever since I heard about this story I imagine this happening to me at every concert I go to.

  • 31 windmills in a row at 4:05 !!!!!!

  • Man the kid on drums did pretty good.

  • According to Wikipedia, "Halpin died February 9, 2008, of an inoperable non-malignant brain tumor."

Search "Scott Halpin" in Wikipedia for the whole story.

  • Dig this, He hadn't picked up sticks in a year!! There was no practice of any kind whatsoever. He was just that good of a drummer. see wikipedia.

  • if you're talking about keith he also never practiced ever and never warmed up before any gigs. if you're talking about scott then i dunno hhaaha

  • Scot is pretty much the poster child for every fans dream to show that one day you too could jam out with ur favorite band. And yes filling in for keith moon would have been mine as well lol.

  • HOLY SHIT. Imagine going to a concert of a band you idolize, and having the opportunity to temporarily be a part of it. GAH! This is the kind of crazy awesome shit you see in hollywood movies.

  • @elbowonfire or at a Who concert.

  • @elbowonfire Try going to a blind guardian concert sometime...

  • Sad to remember Moonie this way, kinda makes you wonder if they had replacements for MJ in the audience.

Somebody was enabling way back when

  • And he's better than Kenny Jones!

  • oh my god thats what i was going to say!!

  • too bad scott halpin died already

  • and they were still able to put on a legitimate performance! that shows some true devotion to fans right there

  • Gah! luckiest man in the world! I would kill to do that!

  • Now THAT was cool!

  • WOW go to a concert and next thing you know- you're playing drums with the greatest band in the world--- THATS WHAT I CALL HEAVEN

  • now a days most bands would cancel the gig or have the drummer's drum tech take over maybe... and here they just pulled a kid in from the crowd who wasnt just decent but knew the song pretty well

  • hola , i was at this show and never really knew the true story of what happened , maybe because i was on horse pills myself ? i dont remember , it was a long time ago , all i know is moon passed out and i heard pete asking for a drummer ? i wanted my money back i think ,..

  • you're apparently 29, and it's called ketamine.

  • Wow scott had a great story for life.

  • Funny,.. Scott reminds me of things to come as he looks a bit like Kenny Jones, who we all know replaced Moon for a few lps..

  • Hey, I thought that too!

  • That's Incredible. You go to a concert to see your favorite band and you end up Drumming for them. One in a million Chance.

  • it strikes me as really odd and kind of lame that townsend would make scott halpin play a song that he couldn't possibly know how to play (as it hadn't been released yet). especially a song with so many shifts in tempo and dynamics. considering that, I think scott did a great job. still, i dont see why they didn't just play a couple of old classics that the kid might actually have known. it's great to finely see this though. thanks for posting it.

  • R.I.P Scott

  • scott died? or do you mean kieth moon?

  • both of them. scot died last year

  • really... i didnt know that....

  • According to pete Keith took some tranquilizers that vets administer to animals... hense he passed out by misadventure

  • Halpin had to have walked around with a boner for the rest of his life after that!!! Awesome.

  • omg..

ive never heard that one before!

    lol

    that was funny...

  • stupid wikipedia says he did a lame job on this song but it sounds dead on to me, if not a little hesistant. which is understandable!! pete was jammin

  • i just looked him up... turns out he's dead now.

    brain tumor.

  • For someone that came to the show for watch and not to play , he did a good job

  • take a litle dope and walk out in the air

  • This guy is a legend, imagine how cool it must have felt Scott Haplin RIP

  • Scot Haplin actually did a really good job. He is such a lucky guy

  • I was at this concert got there at 8am pouring rain for about 3hrs and then very windy they let us in about 5pm. Lynyrd Skynyrd opened the show first time heard Freebird! Oh! My!!!

  • The term gets thrown around a lot, but this is truly legendary.

  • fuckin awesome

  • haha 0:33 he starts a beat and Pete's like "Hold it!"

  • LOL. I don't think this song was released by this show, or maybe just was.

  • Keith moon wasn't playing on the drums though, he had passed out, an audience member was playing the drums and probably didn't know the right beat

  • Only after the tour I think. It was definitely released on Odds and Sods in 74.

  • too bad that dudes not alive anymore what a freakin legend

  • OMG what a lucky bastard! To take a bow at the end of a show with The Who... something a regular person would kill a man to do!

  • one of my favorite who songs, you really do need massive balls to fill in for keith fucking moon during a who show

  • Scot Halpin has passed away, R.I.P to someone with testicles the size of Tulsa!

  • agreed

  • @mspratz Amen. The man had balls the size of mine!

  • "So honey, how did the concert go?"

"Well, the drummer got hammered and passed out, so I ended playing the drums for The Who"

"Shut up, it's not even funny. Just go and fold the laundry"

Halpin scratches his head, and goes to the laundry room.

  • Top 3 Who songs evah.

  • Talk about a trial by fire. I'd say that given the fact that this song wasn't that well known outside of Who fans until its release a year later in Odds & Sods, Scott Halpin did a pretty fine job. Kudos, mate.

  • I'm glad this is on tape!

  • What a kick ass night. Only in America!! The drugs are too good!! LOL Moonie couldn't handle the 'horse tranquilizer'!! or 'tranquilizer(s)!'

    THEWHO

    LONG LIVE ROCK!

  • He took like, three or four times the amount to take down a horse with brandy... I'm amazed he lasted as long as he did!

  • the complete and total definition of a "defining moment" absolutely the greatest story ever told

  • Scott Halpin had one of the best stories in the history of rock-n-roll.

  • it's true

  • has he been in any bands since this night? if not, then its one of the greatest downfalls in rock history

  • But really, what band could he have gone to that would have been a step up?

  • the band wouldn't have to step up, it would be a shame if he wasnt in a band

  • People get their lives short all the time, but im sure that he got the best of his bucket list. I was wondering, did he do anything else with The Who?

  • apparently he got a who jacket after this show and that was the end of it.

    Still freakin awesome

  • I read that they gave him a tour jacket and some drum sticks, but at the concert after-party he set them down and somebody swiped them. He also says Daltry promised him $1000, but was also drinking straight from a bottle of Jack Daniels when he said it, so it wasn't surprising to Halpin when that didn't happen. So basically he got 15 minutes on stage and a place in history. Not bad really!

  • thats crazy, too bad he died this year

  • Amazing, you gotta give someone credit to just step in and play improvise songs with a huge band like The Who!

  • Kieth Moon had done some PCP and was wiped out. He was hauled off stage and Pete asked the audience if someone could play drums! Tooo much!

I have never seen a whole video of one song with this guy playing. Very cool!

  • actually someone spiked his drink with PCP

  • elephant/horse sleeping pills...

heard those ones WAAAAAAAY more then PCP

  • it was ketamine

  • pcp wouldnt even make u pass out though

  • it says PCP in Pete's biography

  • its horse tranquilizers

  • This dude isn't half bad, in fact, I'd say that - coming in off the street - he's better than Ringo Starr.

  • This guy woke up in the morning, took a shower and got dressed with know idea that by the end of the night he was going to become a member of The Who(temporarily)lol, amazing.

  • Scott Halpin is living my dream! WOW!

  • That shot at the end where they embrace and bow and then hop around is pricless...he got the chance of a lifetime and rose to the occasion. God Bless you brother Scott. RIP

  • Happy birthday Pete!

  • Damn!

  • Where's Keith?

  • Unconscious.

Scott Halpin is playing. Google it.

  • Read the description. It says right there, "Scot Halpin on drums".

  • Woops, sorry, didn't read the description. Was just curious about another awesome performance. ;)

  • its depressing that he died just last month of a brain tumor.

    R.I.P. Scott Halpin

  • Great. thanks, palmettopony

  • it'd be my dream!! coming from the crowd to play with a great band...

  • Scott takes a bow with the 'Oo! Gimme goosebumps. The ultimate rock and roll fantasy. Held his own, too. RIP, man. We rejoice with you (Romans 12:15) in your 15 minutes of fame.

  • this is incredible. love this song. thank you.

  • YouTube is the greatest. Sincere thanks, palmettopony, and Rest In Peace, Scot. You belong to history now...
