The reason that swine flu has elements from different flus is the same reason why bird flu has elements from different flus. When multiple viri infect a cell they have a chance of sharing genes, sine they will both be using the same replication machinary to copy themselves. This sharing is actually advantageous for viri as it reduces immune response to the new combination.
