That must have been a life: The golden 20s, the depression, several wars, the rise of rock and roll and popular music, times were changing so often and she kept on playing that beautiful new orleans jazz until the end. It's like a time travel and so adorable.
God bless her, wow! What a testament to the true essence of a musician, heart, mind, body and soul....pure beauty and grace.....Thank you for sharing.
My ship called N.O. during the carnival in 1978 (I guess). I visited Preservation Hall twice. Sweet Emma was paralized and played with only one arm. I brought her geetings from a band in my hometown. she was in a very bad temper and paid no attention.
To see these people well aged, play When the saints goes marching in was very, very, very great. Their fingers were stiff, but how they played
George Lewis took me to a back neighborhood where the musicians gathered and played long after the tourists had gone to bed. There were many of the finest assembled, but nobody stole my heart and soul the way Sweet Emma did. At the time, she was pushing 70, but she stole the show! What a great performer, and person! She is a legend in the Jazz Capitol of the World...NoLuns.
@miccheck4750 , what an honor to be realted to such a hero. Her work should never be forgotten, and thank God for the Preservation Hall for opening this musical doorway for me!
