originaly there was a connection between them(like no mercy/crash course), but some people got frustrated about the "we are saved, yay, no wait, we are stuck again :(" thing, there were also a ingame cutscene between the campaigns, valve noticed that it wasnt frustrating like the beta testers said, thats why l4d2 has a complete story line

Go into L4D go Commentary mode and get to the rooftop finale the developer said the Helicopter pilot was gonna say "i did a street pickup and i feel a bit sick so we might stop along the way a bit" he was infected but the Gamers thought all their hard work meant nothing now because they reached the pilot but he died so...
